The Saints officially safety Tyrann Mathieu on Wednesday what will be a homecoming for the veteran safety.

Mathieu grew up in New Orleans and went to school nearby at LSU before embarking on an NFL career that’s taken him to the Cardinals, Texans, and Chiefs. He spent a good chunk of time on the open market before agreeing to a three-year deal with the NFC South club this week.

At a press conference following the announcement of the deal, Mathieu called it “most definitely a dream” to be playing for his hometown team and outlined the role he hopes to play in the Saints’ secondary this season.

“I’m hoping I can come in and be a leader and make other guys’ jobs easier,” Mathieu said.

Mathieu said the Saints defense pops off the screen when he watches film of it and the hope in New Orleans is that Mathieu’s arrival makes the unit even more potent once they hit the field later this year.

  1. But the real question is has playing for a 4-13 team been a dream? Because that’s happening as well.

  2. I wonder if that dream would have happened if the money wasn’t right? I’m all for a fella getting the most they can. But reality is he wasn’t getting offers other places or the money wasn’t to his liking. I’ll go with the former.

  3. Talking about the saints doesn’t feel the same without Brees and Payton.

  4. He’s on the short list of players without whom the Chiefs may not have hoisted their latest Lombardi. Wish him all the best.

  5. We still miss you in KC. But must be good to be home. Congratulations

  6. Teams with dominant defenses like this one will be rarely go 4-13. You must be thinking about ATL.

  7. Good riddance, the Chiefs can be a bottom 1/3rd defense just as easily without him. Of course they might be in the top half with a safety who might actually tackle. If only Mathieu was as good at safety as he is running his mouth. He’d be a perennial all-pro of that we’re the case.

This guy is good, but not the money he has been making. He has never been about winning, just the most money.

  9. There’s a reason he sat in free agency for so long. I’m no expert, but I’m thinking that track meet they had with Buffalo in the playoffs has something to do with it. I don’t know enough to understand what his specific role was in their defensive collapse and giving up passing TDs to Buffalo at will, but there is likely something there.

  10. While I’ve given up on the Saints overall, I am all about Tyrann coming home to the Dome. That first home game will see a crowd on their feet when the Honey Badger is introduced to the Saints faithful. The 504 will be out in force to welcome home one of their own.
