Commanders rookies reported for a minicamp this weekend, but one notable member of the group was not there for all of the activities.

First-round pick Jahan Dotson didn’t take part in the team’s workout on Saturday because he was back at Penn State for graduation ceremonies. The wide receiver said graduating was a big deal for him because “many people in my family haven’t achieved this goal,” but that he wasn’t planning to take time off from minicamp until he spoke to head coach Ron Rivera.

“I was actually ready to skip the graduation and be out here at practice,” Dotson said. “But he said that’s a once in a million type of thing. He was all for me going, so I honestly hadn’t even thought about skipping practice until he kind of brought that up.”

Dotson said the combination of being drafted, starting minicamp and graduating from college made for the “most exciting, spontaneous week of my life.” Now he’ll turn all his attention toward football in hopes of making an immediate and positive impact on the Washington offense.

  1. I’m certainly not a Washington fan,… but you have to appreciate Rivera’s appreciation for what’s important in life beyond football. Nice Move Coach.

  2. Makes me like Rivera more. Hat’s off for thinking of his player’s best interest.

  3. Yet again Mr Rivera demonstrates that is not only a coach. But a person who has a good head on his shoulders and understands what is important and what is less so. So many actions in day to day life we do out of habit or expectation, repetitions. Some days in life stand out. Good of him to cut the string and say no no you go have that moment. That’s a family moment also, one that can effect young eyes watching and have old eyes weep. Bravo Mr Rivera, and congratulations Mr. Dotson.

  4. Congratulations to Dotson for graduating and to Coach for absolutely doing the right thing.

  5. The jury is still out as to Ron being able to get Washington to be a solid competitive football team. But there is no question that Ron Rivera is a class act !!

  6. It’s little things like this that remind you that there are nice people in the Washington organisation and NFL in general.

With all the alleged sleaze, racism, sexism, fraud etc, its nice to read a lighthearted/feelgood story for a change

  7. Just hope that won’t be the reason the Commanders don’t make the playoffs…lol

  8. Aw. Isn’t that such a heart warming story. Isn’t Ron just so wonderful.

  9. Make Snyder sell the team to a Rivera led group – let him lead the much needed Washington fix from the top to the bottom.

  10. Wow a classy move like this never happens in all of DC. Riverboat Ron 2024

  11. Ron felt bad enough for the guy …. he went to Penn State after all. No books / no classes / no problem.

  12. Easy to have differing opinions of Rivera as a coach.
Hard to think of him as anything other than a good person.

  13. Was this really even a hard decision to make? Rivera knows this would’ve been a terrible look to make this guy miss out on graduation for a spring minicamp. Easy call.

  14. I’m an Eagles fan (living in NOVA) but have definitely gained respect for Rivera over the last few years. I hope Snyder gives him a long leash after the Wentz signing. Rivera is absolutely a class act and is the best coach Washington has had since Gibbs v1.

  15. Rivera is a terrible coach. He’s had three winning seasons in 12 years. Oh, now he’s benevolent for “allowing” a man to attend his own college graduation?

What does the amount of winning seasons as a coach have to do with his goodwill towards a player? Perhaps you’d rather have a coach with 17 winning seasons kick you during practice.

  17. Just solidifies my stance as a Ron Rivera fan. You don’t know what you have in him Snyder

  18. Remember that time when I let you go to your graduation ? And now you want a bigger contract because you made the pro bowl ?!

  19. missing any practice (not just rookie mini-camp) to attend your college graduation should be a league wide mandate, imo

  20. Whose giving a thumbs down to these comments?! Total class act by coach

  21. Is it just me? I assumed all 32 coaches would allow these kids to attend their college graduation.

  22. What kind of monster would make a kid miss graduation for a practice in May?

  23. Just about any employer in America would give someone an excused absence to attend their college graduation ceremony.

  24. I may quibble with his coaching and personnel decisions but there’s no denying that Rivera’s stability and class are exactly what the Washington organization needs right now.

  25. Rivera has always been a solid person. I wish it worked out more in Carolina but he certainly had some success. He typically makes the right decision when it comes to life experiences. Miss having Riverboat Ron in Carolina.

  26. College graduate and first round pick – not easy to do. Go Dotson, Go Commanders!!

Hard to say since so few actually graduate. Much less on time.
