Lewis Cine: Buccaneers repeatedly said they’d take me at No. 27, and didn’t

It seems that every year a player emerges from the draft explaining that a team had claimed it would draft him in a certain spot and did not.

This year, one such player is Vikings safety Lewis Cine. Via SI.com, Cine recently told Richard Sherman that an unnamed team holding the twenty-seventh overall pick (i.e., the Buccaneers) has repeatedly said they’d take him if he was there.

He was. The Bucs didn’t take him.

“I had a team at twenty-seven,” Cine said. “They know who they are. I aint gonna’ say no names. It was at twenty-seven. The whole process — if you’re there — we’re gonna pick you. They move down to the first pick of the second round. I’m like, damn, they did me just so dirty.”

The Buccaneers may have made the calculation that Cine would still be there at No. 33. But for the Vikings taking him at No. 32, he would have been.

We had a few players at 27 that we targeted,” coach Todd Bowles said on the second night of the draft. “Moving back to 33, which was the first [pick] today, we had one guy left there. The other ones went off the board, so it wouldn’t have been smart for us to trade back down and lose the guy we wanted.”

Obviously, that doesn’t mesh with Cine’s contention. But let’s be realistic. Bowles was never going to admit, even if it were 100-percent true, that they wanted Cine, they traded down and gambled on Cine still being there, and they lost the gamble so they settled for defensive end Logan Hall.

  1. Imagine dreaming about sunny, beautiful Tampa playing with GOAT then the Vikings draft you. I’d be super crabby too.

  2. #27 found more value (or so they believed) to take an extra pick and get someone at 33. Only time will tell if they made a good trade. Happens throughout the draft. If he wants to use it as motivation, great. Probably better he keep his mouth closed about the subject, as fair to say he’s reduced the future free agent pool by one team if he has a good career.

  3. This guy doesn’t sound like he’s going to make it in the professional world. Teams try their best to do mock drafts so they can try to figure out who’s going to be there when they pick. There are always surprises. Also, new information becomes available and things change. Have you ever been to a wedding and hear them recite their promises to stay together until death? Sometimes those promises get broken, too. Welcome to the real world my friend.

  4. As a Minnesota fan. Send Cine and a pick for Winfield Jr and Tyler Johnson please

  5. Lol, did he actually think he was being crafty by not naming names? Maybe a that’s why TB passed…

  6. I mean, it’s the nature of the beast, to an extent, but these young players shouldn’t be manipulated and lied to by the super-powerful, monolithic entity that’s going to employ them. I think anyone would be pissed if it happened to them.

On the bright side, he got chosen by a team that didn’t lie to him.

  7. Sounds like Bowles did admit it. They had several players they liked still at 27 so they moved down, and by 33 only one was left. Cine is one of the ones they liked that went off the board.

  8. Some guys like even need to use these type of perceived slights for motivation. No big deal. After playing at Georgia, Cine probably would have liked to stay in the south. The Vikings have great facilities and ownership. He lived in Massachusetts for awhile so he has experienced colder weather. He’ll be happy once he settles in.

All true. So why does a team feel the need to promise a player they’re going to pick him at a certain spot?

  10. “I’m like, damn, they did me just so dirty.”
