Kevin O’Connell praises Kellen Mond, who is getting a new start under a new coach

It’s unclear exactly what Kellen Mond did to get in Mike Zimmer’s doghouse last year, or when it even happened. Maybe it was being unvaccinated from COVID-19, as were two other quarterbacks on the roster last preseason. Maybe it was simply being drafted by the Vikings, over which Mond had no control.

Whatever it was, perhaps no player on the Vikings’ roster has benefited more from Kevin O’Connell’s arrival than Mond.

Mond is getting some second-team reps, along with Sean Mannion, as they compete for the backup job behind Kirk Cousins.

“Kellen’s having a good spring so far, working incredibly hard, digesting the system,” O’Connell said Wednesday, via Dustin Baker of vikingsterritory.com. “He made a couple of checks yesterday at the line of scrimmage that he wasn’t prepared play-by-play for; he just instinctively did it. Those are the little things you look for.”

The Vikings made Mond a third-round choice in 2021. He threw 51 passes in three preseason games and never got off the bench in the regular season.

When asked if he wanted to see Mond in a meaningless Week 18 game, Zimmer replied, “Not particularly.” The coach added that he had seen enough at practice. A day later, Zimmer clarified that he wasn’t trying to diss Mond, saying, “I just meant [Mond] is the third-team quarterback.”

Zimmer now is gone, and Mond remains, getting a new start under a new coach.

  1. Watching Mannion play in the Packer game told me that Mond must be overmatched, or the coaches had to go.
Serving up a career third stringer for a guaranteed loss was painful.

  2. Well, when Sean Mannion is your other backup. Mond may just look like Dan Marino. We all watched Mannion that night against GB where they rammed their playoff hopes down the drain. I’d be terrified for Kirk Cousins to ever get hurt if that’s who they were trotting out.

  3. Chris Simms is the best QB evaluator of the past 5 years. He loved Mond. Not saying he will be right about Kellen but I wouldn’t be shocked if he is.

  4. Never got off the bench? He played in week 17….not well, but did play.

  5. Yeah, Yeah, we get it.
    Mike Zimmer, big Meanie.
O’Connell – fresh young “relatable” coach.
Kellen Mond – not given a “chance” by big meanie Zimmer.
    Blah, Blah, Blah.

You know what? Mond is a skinny, raw, unimpressive, run of the mill “Athletic” QB with very little pocket skills.

I really wish the Vikings would sign a decent backup. Mannion is COACH, not a player, and Mond is an unpolished 3rd stringer.

He did? What game were YOU watching? I didn’t seem him come in for Mannion. Did I miss it?

  7. This is coaches speak for, “Let’s keep Brett Hundley on speed dial.”

  8. The next edition in the long line of Vikings’ super bowl winning quarterbacks.

  9. Hey, he’s no worse than a guy named Love. By the way, I bet Zim is grinding his teeth at all this indirect criticism of his coaching style. He deserves better.

You must have blinked. At some point late in the game Mannion was dinged up and Mond came in for 3 plays (a 3 and out). He completed 2 passes for 5 yards then on 3rd down threw a near interception and they punted, and Zimmer seant Mannion back out there after that.

  11. Zimmer knows quarterbacks like I know ballet. Choosing Mannion as your backup tells you everything you need to know about his ability to judge a QB.
