Josh McDaniels won’t talk about Colin Kaepernick’s workout

Colin Kaepernick worked out for the Raiders on Wednesday, the first private workout he has had for an NFL team since becoming a free agent in March 2017.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports the “workout was largely considered a positive.”

During his media session Thursday, Raiders coach Josh McDaniels wouldn’t talk about Kaepernick’s workout.

“We will only talk about the people that are on our team,” McDaniels said Thursday. “Dave (Ziegler) and his staff have worked out tons of guys this spring. We really don’t make comments about the evaluations that we made or what they looked like, what they didn’t look like, strengths and weaknesses, those kinds of thing. They are obviously kind of private for us as we look at things to try to make decisions to make the team better. If players are added to the team, then obviously we’ll talk about them at that point.

“I respect the question 100 percent. I understand, but that’s kind of what we’ll stick to.”

The Raiders have Derek Carr, Nick Mullens, Jarrett Stidham and Chase Garbers on the roster at the position, but they obviously are intrigued by Kaepernick and perhaps seeking competition behind Carr.

“We’re encouraging the competition right now,” McDaniels said. “I think our football understands that competition is the way for each player to improve.”

Kaepernick last played in 2016. The 49ers cut him in March 2017, and other than a visit with the Seahawks five years ago, no other team had expressed any interest in Kaepernick until this week.

“We brought in tons of people for workouts,” McDaniels said. “If there’s an opportunity to improve the team, we said it from Day 1 that we would look at every opportunity. He’s not the first player that we’ve looked at and not the last one. There are going to be a lot of people who are going to come in and out of this building and have an opportunity to make an impression.”

Two other teams had interest in Kaepernick before his workout with the Raiders, so if they don’t offer him a contract, maybe the Raiders’ workout opens the door for another team to give him a chance.

  1. And THIS is the media circus many teams were likely trying avoid by staying away from Kap.

  2. This isn’t a good start for Josh McDaniels.Either he doesn’t know what he’s doing or Mark Davis is meddling.

  3. If he really lit it up they would have signed him before his sweat dried.
For some reason the terms “dog” & “pony” come to mind.

  4. This has Mark Davis written all over it. McDaniels would not have done the workout if given a choice. Remember Kaepernick lost his starting job to Gabbert 6 years ago. Time to move along.

  5. As a Broncos fan, I support the Raiders signing Kapernick and support their decision to start him every game next season.

  6. I’ll be glad to see all of the fans threatening to leave follow through if he is signed. The NFL will be a better place without you!

  7. On a side note I have long said that I would love to see Derek Carr in Josh McDaniels offense. Don’t screw it up.

  8. Nobody’s talking about my workout either… for good reason.

  9. In year one of Josh being head coach he doesn’t need the potential distractions that Kaep could bring. Established coaches like Tomlin, Reid, or Belichick would be better equipped to handle such a situation if they wanted to go down that road. Josh gave a good answer to the question, though.

  10. He had 4 passing yards against the Chicago Bears.

His coach was offensive genius Chip Kelly. They were facing the John Fox Chicago Bears. He went 1/5 with 4 yard passing.

I have never played football in my life and I’d bet $1,000 that I could get at least 5 yards passing if you gave me 5 attempts.

  11. He wasn’t cut y the 49ers, HE opted out of his contract. And that was after he turned down a trade to the Broncos because he wouldn’t take a pay cut. That worked out well for him.

  12. If Davis pushed this on McDaniels, I kinda feel bad for McD. He’s spent years and years trying to overcome the circus he created in Denver. Now right out of the gate, he’s running a new circus. If McDaniels is driving this himself, then he deserves what’s coming.

  13. All these geniuses, they know everything. Only the coaches and those in attendance know what happened. It is rare to hear of any player signing immediately after one workout. Players have options and he may have more than one workout. I am not for or against Kaepernick, I don’t care if he plays or not. I just think people can find more important things to be offended over.

  14. My personal opinions aside, even though the workout was “largely considered a positive”, we all know what’s up. If Collin’s workout was as great as they say it went, Kaepernick would have a contract and it would be all over the news. The silence speaks volumes.

  15. “I have never played football in my life and I’d bet $1,000 that I could get at least 5 yards passing if you gave me 5 attempts.”

Not trying to be a hater but in the NFL you would be lucky to escape with your life let alone 5 yards.

  16. “Either give Kaep a tryout, or you can go join Gruden watching Super Bowl reruns…”
    -Mark Davis ??

  17. Yea the nfl didn’t turn its back on kap he walked away and opted out of nines deal that was great money. Why would any team want that toxic player in the locker room. If I were a gm I would deal every player that thinks he is worth more than the team they play for. When they take these inflated contracts it takes away from the possible talent to be hired

  18. The same Josh McDaniels who thought Tebow was the answer at QB, traded Cutler for Orton. Probably loves Kap.

  19. Any lawyer worth their salt will tell Daniels to just do the workout then make a professional evaluation, and do not comment publicly on it at all.

So were just pretending the ravens interest never happened I guess

  21. There was a time when Kaepernick could overcome his lack of understanding of the game with his incredible speed and athleticism. Today organizations would rather have Nathan Peterman and his professionalism instead of the circus sideshow that goes along with Kaepernick and his below average passing game.

  22. Kapernick is obviously a polarizing figure, but if you take away the history, It is normal for NFL teams to kick the tires on veteran backup QBs. The Patriots brought in Testaverde, Flute, etc. when they were well beyond their effective years. There doesn’t have to be any intent beyond that, and there’s no reason to talk about someone who came in for a workout unless you sign them.

Of course, the Raiders must know that they would have to deal with additional media attention by bringing him in, which would be a factor in the decision and probably the main reason that other teams haven’t brought him in, but I don’t think it’s that big of a deal and likely won’t amount to Kaepernick ending up on a roster.

I don’t disagree that Kaepernick is no longer what he was, and that his passing game wasn’t great. However, even with whatever ability Kaepernick has now he is 10000 X better than Nathan Peterman. Peterman is the worst NFL QB I have ever seen.

How good is my protection and receivers? Im sure I could hit a 5-10 yard pass if I got 5 tries and guys were open, but if anyone got ahold of me even once my regular Joe body will be broken and the contest over. At least Kaep is fast. I’m not.

Not with today’s passer-friendly rules. If they even breath on you hard you would get those 5 yards and plenty more on a roughing the passer call.

Tebow wasn’t the answer to anything, that much is true. However, his brief career was really no more or less memorable than Cutler who had all the arm talent in the world. Cutler was about as far from a team player as you could get. I still rather have Orton. Cutler was never going to win anything.

I would take that bet if I could. 50% of the bones in your body would be broken before the ball ever left your hand for the first pass attempt.

Reminds me of the old show “Pros vs Joes” Amateur ball players thought they could beat Clyde Drexler 1-on-1 and the reality was they couldn’t even get 1 shot off.

  28. The trouble with any “workout” is to gauge how a player would hold up at live game speed. Kaep in a pistol offense was his gimmick. His strength was is not just his agility but his ability to put a hit on a DB or LB trying to tackle him. But that was 8 plus years ago. His last two years in the league he tried to avoid those hits (think Cam Newton). He is not a small compact body running lower to the ground like a running back. He is a tall vertical runner. Those guys get hurt. His vegan lifestyle will not make him stronger. Done.

  29. No matter your position on Kapernicks kneeling, It is extremely insulting to think the man who is 34 and hasn’t played in 6 yrs can just pick up a ball and play in the NFL. This man didn’t have a winning season the last three years he did play and was 1 & 10 the last year before being replaced by Blaine Gabbert is supposed to be good enough to take off 6 years and then jump in and play because he threw a couple lob passes to receivers without DB’s or a pass rush? GTFOH with that trash take. he is done period. If Andrew Luck wanted to come back I would say he has missed too much time and he couldn’t do it and he has missed less time and was a better QB!

  30. I wouldn’t mind, sure I dislike his politics and disruptive behavior, but he could potentially be a good backup to Carr. Thing is, they just traded for a #2 QB so….
