Justyn Ross’s spectacular one-handed catch impresses Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce

It’s way too early for any undrafted rookie to earn a roster spot, but Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross is already garnering attention in Kansas City.

Ross made a spectacular one-handed catch on the practice field Wednesday during Organized Team Activities, and both quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce took to social media afterward to praise Ross for handling it like business as usual.

“Craziest part about this was dude acted like this was normal after he caught it,” Mahomes wrote.

“I felt like I was the only one that got hype when I saw it live!! WE NEED MORE JUICE!” Kelce added.

Ross isn’t like most undrafted rookies. As a true freshman at Clemson, he was one of the best receivers in college football, and he likely would have been a first-round pick after that season if not for the NFL’s rule requiring players to be three years out of high school before they can play in the NFL. After his freshman year, however, the rest of his Clemson career was plagued by injuries, including a diagnosis of a spinal condition that led some NFL teams to conclude he won’t be able to play in the NFL, and he never equaled the production of his freshman year.

But now Ross is getting an opportunity in Kansas City. By the early returns, he’s making the most of it.

  1. I think the league is quite happy with the three-year rule. Otherwise, this young man might have received $20-30 mil and never seen the field the last two-three years. Good luck to him this year. I’m sure he wants to flash those freshman skills again and I’m sure the Chiefs want to see it, too.

  2. I really do think every team is going to regret not drafting this kid. I don’t see any way that he’s not at least a contributor if healthy, was definitely worth a late round flyer.

  3. Practice..We’re talking about practice.

    *****************************************************************************

And many receivers CAN’T do this in “practice” either.

  4. He’s one unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from never walking again…scary to think about…

  5. Ross just might be the answer as an Ohio st fan i remember him well this guy is the real deal if he’s ok medically the sky is the limit reminds me of Michael Thomas ( Saints ) .

  6. And that is exactly why the nfl has the 3 year rule. And good for that.

This kid obviously could have been seriously injured at the pro level considering how many injuries he developed at the minor league level. His body was not, and may never be fit for pro ball.

  7. Chiefs receiving core might just be the biggest surprise this year. They won’t have the hypersonic missle in Hill but outside of Hill and Kelce Mahomes didn’t really have many reliable targets. Hardman needs to step up and I think he will its his contract year, Sky sounds like he’s the real deal, and if Ross ends up being the reciever he was as a freshman they could have 3 dangerous recievers that secondaries can’t cheat on. Empty backfield sets will be interesting if Mahomes has 5 quality pass catchers to chuck it to.

  8. He really isn’t the ” steal of the draft”..he wasn’t drafted. Although he could be a very good undrafted FA. I wish him well but, the steal of the draft is Nakobe Dean..by far.
