Trey Lance: Finger injury impacted me all last season, feeling really good now

Jimmy Garoppolo‘s shoulder injury has had a big impact on the 49ers offseason because the team has not been able to trade him since he had surgery, but there hasn’t been any sign that his extended stay on the roster has impacted plans to start Trey Lance this fall.

Lance’s own health came up when he spoke to reporters from the team’s OTAs this week. Lance injured his right index finger in a preseason game and that didn’t keep him from playing during the regular season, but he said it was something that impacted him when he threw the ball.

After taking a few weeks off from throwing the football at the end of the season, Lance said the finger was finally back to where it needed to be.

“I kind of dealt with my finger throughout the season, so for me, it was kind of getting that back, and getting healthy, and feeling back to myself,” Lance said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “Like, towards the end of the season, I wasn’t the best version of myself overall. It was a long season, a long pre-draft process, of me not being in school. Everyone says it’s going to be, but you don’t really realize it until it happens. And I think the finger, for me, was the biggest thing just as far as throwing the ball. I kind of had to learn to throw the ball differently without kind of using my pointer finger, I guess because of just where it was at throughout the year. But now, I feel like I’m in a great spot, health-wise, and throwing the ball wall, and feeling really good.”

The question of what a full year of Lance as the starter will look like, but little doubt that the 49ers need him at 100 percent if they’re going to get the kind of answers they want.

  1. I will tell you Lance what will impact you all this season if nothing happens soon. Every time you look over your shoulder you will see Jimmy just waiting and I am sure that will be pressure for a young QB.

  2. The question of what a full year of Lance as the starter will look like

It will look a lot like 8-9

  3. Regardless of the finger, it’s very rare for a young QB to be 100% without any game experience. Most QB’s take at least 2 or 3 years to figure out the mental part, and how to compete against the defensive coordinators in the league. Having an injury like that can actually be a blessing in disguise because it forces the mental focus that much more. It would be foolish to have huge expectations this soon.

  4. If I had a nickle for every player who said “I’m going to be much better this year because I was dealing the a minor injury all last year,” I’d be rich.

  5. It took a year to recover from a finger injury? Hope he never blows out a knee or he’ll be on injured reserve for 5 years…

  6. He is an unproven commodity. Hopefully he has a good year. I wish him luck. Seems like a good guy.

  7. He’d be better off not leaking excuses. The NFL is a rough sport – one year it’s a finger, the next year it’s something else. Lance needs to demonstrate he can roll with the punches instead of making excuses.

  8. Trey Lance appears to be a first round bust! Serve them right! How can you pick this player at the top of the first round to be your franchise quarterback who has no record of accomplishment in the college game?

  9. Total bust they need to have the kid wait on the bench for as long as Jimmi G. is playing. He gives them the best chance to win games not Lance.

  10. Give the guy a break. Everyone knows a hangnail can be an excruciatingly painful and traumatic experience.

  11. From experience, throwing a football well with an injured index finger is, obviously, difficult to impossible. Adjusting the grip to throw the ball better than you can with the now unavailable normal grip is tricky at best. You lose velocity and touch and accuracy. Hoping the kid is fully recovered – Go Trey Lance, Go 49ers!!

  12. Yeah, let’s get rid of a QB who took us to 2 NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl, not to mention loved by his teammates for someone who looked like a deer caught in headlights last season when he did play. If Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer can win a Superbowl, so can Jimmy G with the Niners. San Francisco will be lucky to win 6 games with Lance as the starter.

  13. The team downplayed the injury at the time, likely out of embarrassment for getting Lance hurt in an exhibition game. Now we’re circling back around and using it as an excuse for the whole season. So Lance lost a year of development because the Niners felt the need to play mind games with the Lions. Shrewd.

  14. “Favre threw the ball with a broken thumb. Quit making excuses”

Favre had already been the starter for 12 years. Favre, himself, said it was painful but he still had strength in the thumb.

  15. And it’s not as if Lance didn’t play or refused to play with the injury. He did play when called on.

  16. QBs in Shanahan’s offense seem to be getting injured a lot, RG3, Jimmy G, now Trey Lance with only few starts. Brady dodged the bullet when they didn’t sign him during his free agency.

  17. I think it’s time for John Lynch to head back into the broadcast booth.

  18. Toss up between lance and Mac Jones for who will be the bigger bust. They both are epic busts, just who will be worse is to be determined

Except WHY did he get hurt in the exhibition game? Cam Newton got hurt in a preseason game in 2019, too.

    See?

Run-based QBs do not work or sustain long without running into issues.

SF traded UP for Trey Lance. Mindboggling.

  20. @touchback6- Lance got hurt getting hit in the pocket on a passing play.

  21. This kid is a bust. I cannot wait to see this dude take over as the starter this year, even HC KS knows Lance isn’t ready which is why he isn’t enthusiastic to start him at all. Lances skill set reminds me of a worse rawer version of Colin Kaepernicks when he debuted 10YRs ago. Missing on Lance is going to set SF back for years.
