Bill Belichick on possibility Dont’a Hightower returns: We’ll talk about players who are here

The Patriots have not moved to re-sign linebacker Dont’a Hightower this offseason, but that’s not because head coach Bill Belichick has a low opinion of the veteran.

Hightower’s name came up during a Tuesday press conference when Belichick was asked about young linebackers like Josh Uche being used in various roles like Hightower was during his time in New England. Belichick said it is “a stretch to compare most anybody to Hightower” because he’s “one of the best linebackers that’s ever played here.”

Belichick was then asked if the team would consider bringing Hightower back for an 11th season in New England.

“We’ll just talk about the players that are on the team right now,” Belichick said, via Nick O’Malley of MassLive.com.

Hightower obviously wouldn’t need extended time to pick up the team’s defensive scheme if he did return, but the Patriots defense floundered at the end of last season and the team’s move to younger linebackers seems likely to stick as they try to find a better formula this time around.

  1. the dude has always played hard and smart. Feel like the ending is / was inevitable, but still sad to see him not come back if it plays out like that.

  2. Is there a team in the league that has less talent than the Pats? 6 wins max this year since Mac has already hit his ceiling and the league has plenty of tape.

  3. Did the press ask about Jerod Mayo and Ted Johnson too? They have as much left in the tank as Hightower

  4. I truly appreciate how good Hightower was and what he has done for the franchise. His play in the Atlanta SBowl was huge. But, he opted out in 2020, him and his wife had, I believe, their 1rst child, he had made plenty of money(north of 50 mil) and IMO should have not come back. Hightower was not good last year. Time to hang it up.

  5. If someone can find a betting line where I can bet the Pats over 6 wins, please let me know. I will bet my house.

  6. With a younger and faster defense, the division runs through Foxborough this year.

No Brady = No playoffs for Belicheat

He just made the playoffs without him last year though, so not sure what that means.

  8. High might be getting close to the end, but he’s been one of the greatest Patriots players ever. A huge reason they won the last 3 Super Bowls. He made critical defensive plays against both Seattle and Atlanta and he played great against the Rams too.

Add in the winning and leadership he had at Bama and it’s quite a football career.

Never say never. Remember if someone would’ve bet Brazil +6.5 at home to Germany in the World Cup, everyone would be homeless

  10. It’s fun to pretend that Brady made the difference in Super Bowl LI or even remotely deserved to be MVP but in reality Hightower (along with White) was a much bigger contributor. That strip sack completely changed the game. The defense shut out the Falcons in the last 18 minutes and made the comeback possible.

  11. Division runs through Foxborough this year? Last place looks like a reasonable finish.

I think it simply means someone forgot to take his medication.
