Aaron Rodgers: Packers made a competitive offer to Davante Adams

Aaron Rodgers announced on March 8 he was returning to the Packers for 2022. Nine days later, the Packers traded All-Pro receiver Davante Adams to the Raiders.

Pete Doughterty of ESPN asked Rodgers on Tuesday whether the quarterback was “taken aback” when Adams told Rodgers he wanted to leave. Rodgers defended General Manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president Russ Ball for “stepping up” in their long-term contract offer to Adams, on whom the Packers had used the franchise tag.

“We had some really honest conversations about my future here, and how long I wanted to play, and his own thoughts about his future and where he wanted to play, live and raise his family,” Rodgers said, via Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “The team obviously stepped up and made a competitive, or even more compelling, offer. Ultimately, Davante thought it was best for him and his family to be in Vegas, so that was tough for sure, but I love Tae and love our connection. I’m a little biased, but it’s hard to think of a better player I played with. He had a chance to be the all-time record in a lot of categories at receiver for us. I thought that might be a little nugget that would kind of keep him here, but Tae made a decision that he thought was in the best decision for him and his family, and I can’t fault him for that at all.”

Rodgers said he did not try to “recruit” Adams to stay in Green Bay.

“We were talking almost every single day,” Rodgers said. “If I feel like I’ve got to recruit a guy like that back to the Packers, I’ve already lost.”

The Packers honored Adams’ wishes in trading him to the Raiders, so he could reunite with Derek Carr. But Rodgers surely will miss Adams on the field.

Adams caught 238 passes for 2,927 yards and 29 touchdowns the past two seasons in earning back-to-back All-Pro honors. That’s an average of eight catches for 98 yards and a touchdown per game.

  1. They won the deal by a MILE. The Raiders gave them all their draft picks and you still have the key to the success – The most upstanding America in the NFL – Aaron Rodgers!

  2. Packers absolutely won the deal, this trade unplugged the drain for the Raiders. The Raiders need to begin rebuilding immediately after this 3-14 season.

  3. I don’t think the Packers or their fans care anymore. Rodgers can make any WR a weapon immediately. The Packers received tons of draft picks and freed up all that wasted money the Raiders are paying Adams to sit out with hamstring injuries until he is traded to winning team again.

  4. The fact is Green Bay could’ve played hardball and let Adams play for them or nobody in 2022. Even if he held out he eventually would’ve come back to play in his age 30 season for whatever the Packers offered. He’s not the type to sit out and not play.

Although it was honorable trading him to his team of choice, the Packers gained no real advantage doing it when they did and are now a worse team because of it. Not a good look losing Adams with the Rams adding guys like Allen Robinson and Bobby Wagner.

  5. The Raiders got fleeced even worse in this deal than they did in the Mack trade. They had four late round draft picks to get the high price tag of Adams and they don’t have a QB……..what a complete b0z0 move, l0l!

  6. How about we wait for the season to say who won the trade? Also who are the packers replacing one of the best receivers in the game with? Oh yeah nobody

  7. Adams departure is a loss, no doubt. But the guy really wanted to play in LV with his college buddy, so what do you do? I think getting a 1 and a 2 for a 29 year old player and opening up a huge chunk of salary cap room will be better long-term for the Packers. As great of a player as he is, the Packers have 0 NFC titles and 0 Super Bowls with him on the team. Like Rodgers he’s done amazing things during the regular season but has been underwhelming in the playoffs.

Is this a serious comment? How about the fact that Adams isn’t playing with a top 3 NFL QB anymore? We don’t need to wait and u need to get out of denial, the Raiders division is arguably the toughest in the league. Raiders don’t stand a chance!

    Chiefs 14-3
    Chargers 12-5
    Broncos 10-7
    Raiders 5-12

  9. No one cares that Adams and Carr played at the collegiate level.

The only three things that matter and are facts:
#1 This is the NFL not college.
#2 Derek Carr is not Aaron Rodgers
#3 The Raiders have no talent on their team and will be battling for forth place this season.

    Good talk bro.

  10. Like Rodgers he’s done amazing things during the regular season but has been underwhelming in the playoffs.

Thats rich considering the Raiders Playoff history this century..

  11. Who did they replace him with and how is Green Bay a better team now? Just answer those 2 questions. The Raiders aren’t the lions they beat the chargers to make the playoffs last year. Yes the age west is stacked but they’ll probably finish ahead of Denver, and be right there with the chiefs and chargers. Carr isn’t Rodgers but he has Waller, Renfrow, adams, and more weapons so he doesn’t really need to be Rodgers. I guess packer homers just want to believe they’re somehow better without davante adams…ok

  12. Yeah the raiders are going 5-12 lol. Keep dreaming. Don’t be surprised when they’re better than the chargers and chiefs. Lots of weapons on offense and Crosby and chandler jones is a pretty good combo.

  13. The Raiders are in big trouble, the lack of talent from all the cuts they made from the draft picks acquired from the Mack trade are GONE. They trade all of this years picks for an overpaid WR and had only 4 very late round picks. This is the beginning of the rebuild wave crashing down on the Raiders after they finish dead last in the division.

Keep Dreaming…..good advice for you, but eventually you need to deal with reality and fix your serve issues of denial.

    ______

5-12 is way to kind….3-14 is definitely more accurate.

Who is Crosby? Bill Crosby is in jail I thought.

Ewwin knows this because he is the GM.

    Who the Hell is Ewwin?
What are you, like 12? 🤔

    +++++

They replaced him with whoever lines up at the position come Week 1. Targets will be given and the opportunities earned or squandered. My deep sleeper is Winfree.

Will Davante be missed this season? Yes he will. But odds are Adams will have a tough time justifying the dollars over the next 3 years.

How is Green Bay better than last year? The defense which was pretty darn good second half last year retained retained everyone of note, added two high picks in the front 7, and replaced Tyler Lancaster with Jarran Reed. Offense will get Jenkins, Tonyan and hopefully Bahktiari back, 2 proven backs, top tier QB.

Green Bay is going to run the ball more than throw in 2022…. and if you think that’s not by design you haven’t really thought about how Gutie operates.

  18. Maybe Adams, like many of us, did not appreciate the purposeful deception Rodgers employed when lying about a very serious health issue that negatively affected millions, all because he placed his personal privilege and preferences above everyone else’s. I don’t care that he wasn’t vaccinated, it’s the lying with a smirk that annoyed me. Rodgers can’t be sent packing soon enough as far as I’m concerned. He must win the SuperBowl this year or not let the door hit him on the way out. Nothing less.

  19. Aaron Rodgers: Packers made a competitive offer to Davante Adams”…just like Rodgers ordered them to offer

  20. Who knows – they might not be as good this year. They might only win 12 games.
