Bill Belichick: It’s a good time to streamline things offensively

The Patriots’ offensive transition continues to be shrouded in mystery.

Head coach Bill Belichick conceded in his Tuesday press conference that the team is streamlining its offensive terminology. But when asked other questions about the offense, Belichick offered no details.

“Well, we’ve had a lot of changes offensively in the last couple of years,” Belichick said. “It’s a good time to streamline things. We did that defensively a couple of years ago and feel like this is a good time to do it offensively. So, yeah, there’s an element of that every year.”

Does that mean the Patriots are running a new offensive system? Belichick was asked that and had a three-word answer.

I don’t know.”

He responded to, “How big are the changes you’re making?” in a similar way.

“I don’t know,” Belichick said. “We make changes every year. I wouldn’t be able to rank them.”

Later asked if the Patriots were more just changing their offensive terminology, Belichick again said, “I don’t know” — this time smiling and shaking his head.

“Yeah, I mean, if [you’re asking] if we’re going to run the veer offense, no, that’s not what we’re doing,” Belichick said. “I’m not really sure what we’re talking about here.”

Of course, Belichick knows what reporters are asking. He’s just not saying how the Patriots are changing things, which is his right. After all, it’s still months away from Week One.

New England is reportedly trending toward having Matt Patricia call the offensive plays this season. He’s been working with the offensive line during the offseason program.

The Lions head coach from 2018-2020, Patricia was New England’s defensive coordinator from 2012-2017.

  1. “New England is reportedly trending toward having Matt Patricia call the offensive plays this season.”
    ———————————————-
Translation: New England is trending toward the AFC East cellar.

  2. I can’t believe I used to dislike this guy! Now he’s my favorite person in the NFL– including all players, coaches, GMs, and owners.

  3. Genius in action. He’s doing more than streamlining.

On D, the LBs and Safeties will line up all over. The concept of “positionless” which is an “amoeba” D like you saw vs Brady last year where Tommy Boy was a deer in the headlights, will likely be more effective over more games this year.

Adding in speed to act running qbs like Josh Allen helps as well.

  4. Typical BB interview, and I say that in a complimentary way. Why would he tell reporters what the plans are?

I know what I’m expecting. They’re going more run-heavy again, but they will also take the reins off of Jones this year. It’s year 2, and BB knows that you can’t waste time in this league. They need to see what they really have w/ him as their QB.

They’ve added some nice pieces – Parker will be a big upgrade, and that speed guy they got in the draft could extend the field for them. Their running game is always good.

  5. Streaming 20 years of history is probably wise. Players always complained about the complexity of the playbook. Since TB12 is no longer in the house and McDaniels is gone too, cut down the offense to something people can pick up.

  6. After January’s defensive embarrassment, BB should be focused on fixing the defense

  7. It’s always a good time for BB to be your favorite team’s head coach 😍.

  8. It looks like the Patriots are doing away with the dink-n-dunk offense that 2 yard Tom used to run. The league has caught up to it and that was the reason the offense struggled in his last year at New England. So they will probably move to the Shanahan style offense that is very run heavy. This offense is a better fit for Mac Jones skill set. That’s why the 49ers were interested in him pre draft.

  9. The Pats coaching staff is like Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Snow White runs the show … the dwarfs are easily replaced.

  10. Translation: Mac can’t execute the offense we built around Brady and Matt doesn’t have any fresh ideas.

  11. if reporters ask him the right question, he’ll answer it in detail. they simply need to ask if “they’re still going to be using the Erhardt-Perkins nomenclature?”

  12. In the last 6 days it has been reported that Joe Judge is going to be calling plays for the Patriots and Matt Patricia will be calling plays for the Patriots. Sounds to me like a lot of smoke screens and neither of them is going to be calling plays.

  13. Tanking for a top signal caller. Mac hit his ceiling in year 1, credit to him but he has no where to go but down.

  14. With no McDaniels, expect a dip in offensive performance from the Patriots this season.

  15. I would guess that they’re still going to be going with the same system (Erhardt) that they’ve used since the turn of the century. Under Brady/McDaniels it likely became overly complex, which was fine for them, but not for a much less experienced QB like Jones. Simplifying may especially make it easier for young receivers to pick up.

  16. Lots of moving part… I kinda LOVE IT!! Keeps things exciting & interesting…. Can’t wait to see how it all eventually unfolds & you know he’s not done by far on building the roster….. who’s coming & who’s going…. Yup, EXCITING TIMES AHEAD!!!

  17. One reason we’ve seen a fair number of proven veteran receivers get to New England and then fail to catch on is that the Pats’ offense asks receivers to know a lot of alternate routes. (Reggie Wayne took one look at the homework he was going to have to do and said, “No, way.”) So maybe the Pats are finally trying to make things a little easier on the receivers. Let the athletes (Tyquan Thornton?) be a instinctive instead of always having to think about what they’re doing. I’m not opposed to this. Anything that’s good for the receivers is probably going to be good for the QB. Still a little edgy about wholesale changes when Mac just spent a solid rookie year figuring things out. Don’t want year two to be a second rookie season.

  18. Genius in action. He’s doing more than streamlining.

Genius…?. Does NKeal Harry remind you of a genius move? Does the beat down by the Bills in the playoffs remind of a genius….? And now after a year you are bailing on your next TBrady…..flip flopping more than Lindsey Graham and fish in the bottom of the boat….entertaining.

  19. Belichick is a weirdo, woulda washed out 20 years ago if it wasn’t for the greatest QB of all time.

  20. Still going to be Erherdt-Perkins like it’s always been, just the parts of the playbook that work best for Jones as opposed to Tom Brady or Cam Newton.

  21. Still not sure why they eliminated the FB – seemed like a good idea to play smashmouth against teams with lots of small speedy guys on defense.

How is it that Brady and the Bucs won the game? How is it that BB’s defense couldn’t stop Josh Allen even once?

  23. Gotta dumb it down so the Bama guy can run it. Probably written in crayon. No wonder McDaniels left, he was gonna look bad either way. At least now he can blame it on the Raiders.

  24. “I don’t know” = “I don’t have to tell you, so I won’t”.

We’ll just have to wait to see how it works out.

  25. Yeah, I can’t get behind the Patriots right now. Belichick has his hands full, and even he knows this team isn’t going anywhere. He’ll probably retire two seasons from now. Kraft should have hired a competent general manager a few years ago.

  26. How is it that Brady and the Bucs won the game?

Tommy didn’t do sweet jack squat in that game. I know the fan club gets really triggered when you hit them with the facts but reality is a QB who puts up a 70 rating in a game gets no credit from any intelligent football fan for winning that game. As is usually the case Brady’s team carries him to wins in big games. Tommy is just along for the ride.

Brady wants to be a Dolphin? Bring it. Bill owns him. 🙂

  27. “I don’t know”

    +++++++

Having told you all that he was completely clueless on offense. If he had helped designing even 25% of the plays, he wouldn’t have trouble calling plays after 20 years.

Funny that Belichick believers can’t see the obvious and laughable contradictions of their talks.

  28. I love Tommy fan club logic. Makes me giggle 😂

First they say it was all Brady that wins games and the coaching doesn’t matter. Now they say oh noes the patriots coaching!1!!!1

5th ranked D last year and 8th ranked offense with new players and a rookie qb.

You can get off these antics of acting like one egg laid is somehow a pattern. The team as a whole ran out of gas with a rookie qb who has never played that much football before and was very inpressive.

Team sport. Learn the game ans drop the chidish arrogance fueled by your jealousy and the success of others.

Your comprehension remains atrocious, Jets fan. Jealousy is a very ugly trait.

Let’s look at actual facts. Brady has won 4 postseason games and a SB without BB. Since joining the Patriots, BB has zero postseason wins without Tom Brady.

    Any questions?

  31. Don’t know why it is so so hard for someone to understand the difference between “Brady did all” and “Brady was the difference”.

The point is that Belichick never built a team that could win SB with ANY other QB, because no other QB could do what Brady did with the cheap squad given by Belichick.

    Yeah, I got one:

Did you finish high school? You seem

If BB left for an already built team like Brady djd, the comparisob

BB left you are the altar in 2000 and your life has been destroyed for 20 years. Let that sink in.

Sure! I got two for ya. If Tommy really is GOAT then why can’t he win one title for his team instead of his team carrying him to those titles? And why did smash his cell phone when confronted with a legacy damaging cheating scandal and those text messages?

  34. The mere mention of Brady just gets the crybabies going. It’s so enjoyable.

Remember that time when Tommy cried like a little girl on tv when they asked him about his draft position? 😂 like… who does that? Must be a real beta male.

That does explain the fan club though 🤔🤭

If that was true then Tommy would not have smashed his cell phone. 🙁

  38. There are hundreds of reasons a person may destroy his phone, like nude pictures of his wife.

To claim it was evidence is like claim “every man is my father because my father is a man”.

    ——
And none of them are valid when the investigation just asked Tommy’s team to search the phone themselves for what the investigation needed. They weren’t going to take the phone away.

Still no good explanations why he smashed his cell phone. That’s because there aren’t any. 🙁

  40. If anyone has to explain why Brady destroyed his cell phone then you are not smart enough to have it explained you. You still go off a May text you believe corroborates anything to the matter. Pouting about Brady is part of your daily diet and we all laught at you for it. Now who is the triggered one?

  41. Tommy smashing his cell phone the day before his own team was supposed to search it themselves for what the investigation was looking for.

The text message were Tommy was complaining about how the ball was inflated and the fact that the equipment guys were doing something about it.

The two text messages where one guy called himself the deflator and another one literally mentioning ball deflation.

The fact that the NFL would never fabricate such a scandal and go out of their way to tarnish the reputation of arguably the face of the whole league on arguably one of its most premier franchises and put the integrity of Super Bowls in question. They would have nothing to gain and everything to lose by such a thing…so you know they had a very valid reason to go after him.

As the Second Circuit put it plainly…the evidence here is compelling if not overwhelming that Tommy is a cheat. It is what it is. Took me a long time to accept it. Time for the fan club to do the same instead of taking out their inadequacies and frustrations elsewhere.

  42. Dwqb11,

I don’t care about baseball, basketball, tennis or golf, I only watch football.

On football, I don’t know much about positions other than QB. It doesn’t cost me much time. BTW, it is fun to argue with people who think Steven Kerr won couple of NBA champions for Michael Jordan.

  43. Why did it surprise you that a guy whose daily job was inflating and deflating football called himself a deflator?

  44. The fan club cheers and admires a cheater and liar. 😥 I’m glad I have more integrity than that.

Keep Cheatin’ Tom out of the HOF!

  45. This is actually the second circuit ruling. No cheating but said Goodell has the power to wield Article 46. Just give it up Rudy.

“The Association primarily relies on a statement in the “Other Uniform/Equipment Violations” section, which provides that “First offenses will result in fines.” It argues that equipment violations include “ball or equipment tampering” and “equipment tampering such as ball deflation.” But the Association finds language in the “Other Uniform/Equipment Violations” provision that we cannot locate. The provision says nothing about tampering with, or the preparation of, footballs and, indeed, does not mention the words “tampering,” “ball,” or “deflation” at all. Moreover, there is no other provision of the Player Policies that refers to ball or equipment tampering, despite an extensive list of uniform and equipment violations ranging from the length of a player’s stockings to the color of his wristbands.

On the other hand, Article 46 gives the Commissioner broad authority to deal with conduct he believes might undermine the integrity of the game. The Commissioner properly understood that a series of rules relating to uniforms and equipment does not repeal his authority vested in him by the Association to protect professional football from detrimental conduct. We have little difficulty in concluding that the Commissioner’s decision to discipline Brady pursuant to Article 46 was “plausibly grounded in the parties’ agreement,” which is all the law requires.”

  46. I guess you don’t even know that the ball was 16 psi when Brady complained, and you talk about deflategate.

Lol, I know he didn’t cheat, because that can be proved LOGICALLY. If you think he cheated, it is your business.

  47. dwqb11 says:

You forgot the part where Judge Chin said in court that the evidence of ball tampering here is compelling if not overwhelming. Which it was.

You admire a cheater and liar. GUILTY!

  48. Remember that time when the fan club tried to dismiss Brady’s cheating by arguing that all teams do it? Yeah ok. Lol.

No actually only one QB was ever suspended for it and that’s their hero.

  49. You Belichick believers think like a 3rd grade : it is true because it makes sense to me. So comes Belichick the idiot invented the system, because it makes sense to you. (As you couldn’t see what Brady did special)

The next level of thinking is “it can’t be true if it leads to or implies something impossible.”

If you are capable of thinking like that, you would already know in 2007 that Belichick didn’t invented anything, because the offense system in 2007 was totally different from the one before.

Understand now why it is very important that Belichick must call plays on offense if it struggles? Because otherwise it proves that he didn’t invent anything on offense, no matter how his believers spin their heads.

  50. Only the fan club would still insist that the league made up the cheating scandal when there is a text message with a guy calling himself the deflator and another that literally said that they were deflating footballs.

Not too bright. Or in denial. Or both.

I’m so happy cheatin Tom doesn’t play for my team now. 🙂 It’s so exhilarating and liberating not having to defend cheating anymore.

  51. I do not think Giselle obsesses over Brady more than GMG. Every post you make about Brady is just icing on the cake.

And the fan club gets triggered every time. Case in point!

I didn’t understand why Nick Wright and Rob Parker loved to mock Tommy all the time but now I do. The fan club is that insecure and they can’t help themselves. Lololol. It’s weird they’re that insecure. Funny that a real non cheater GOAT like Montana or Peyton doesn’t have insecure fans but Tommy does. Huh.

  53. Lol, so insecure that I alone get into a forum full of Belichick believers.

Mam up, what will you say if offense struggles badly?

  54. Goodellmustgo is actively supporting a team that was caught cheating several times over the last couple of decades, but Brady is a cheater, right? At least he won a title legitimately. If you really were a Patriots fan, you wouldn’t throw rocks at glass houses knowing that your house is made of paper.

  55. Goodellmustgo is actively supporting a team that was caught cheating several times over the last couple of decades, but Brady is a cheater, right? At least he won a title legitimately.
    ——
Did he? You sure about that? He cheated once and covered it up why wouldn’t he do it again?

And yes Belichick needs to prove he can win without a QB who cheats. I agree with that.

As for Bill himself and spygate the difference between that and Tommy is Bill stood on a podium with the country listening and admitted it happened, admitted it was wrong and it would never happen again. He owned it and took responsibility.

Tommy when he had the same chance? He smashed his cell phone.

One was very easy to forgive. The other would be too if he was man enough to own it and take responsibility himself. I hope that helps. 🙂

  56. Brady offense ended with a pick 6 to Logan Ryan in the playoffs. Maybe teams finally caught up with Brady offense and that’s why he was smashing tablets on the sidelines all season.

  57. GMG sounds an awful lot like Jan Brady……. Maybe that it….instead of crying Marsha Marsha Marsha, it’s Tommy Tommy Tommy!!!!!
GMG has Jan Brady syndrome……too cute!!!
