The Lamar Jackson mystery continues, with three potential explanations

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, whether he intends to or not, continues to maintain one of the biggest mysteries in the NFL. He’s eligible for a massive second contract, the Ravens are ready to give him one, but he won’t engage them in negotiations.

Meanwhile, he’s boycotting offseason workouts for the first time in his career. And there’s no obvious reason for it, since the team is (as mentioned above) ready to pay him the contract he has earned.

So what’s going on? On Thursday’s PFT Live, we identified three potential explanations.

Possibility No. 1: He wants out of Baltimore.

Jackson has denied such chatter. But until he signs a new contract with the Ravens, it remains a distinct possibility.

Possibility No. 2:  He wants the Ravens to offer him a market-setting contract without the burden of negotiation.

In other words, if the current best contract is $230 million over five years with every penny fully guaranteed, Jackson may be waiting for something a little better than the Deshaun Watson contract. (This may explain the decision of Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti to publicly lament the Watson deal.)

Really, why shouldn’t Jackson expect the Watson deal with a sweetener? Watson has never been an NFL MVP. Likewise, Jackson currently isn’t facing 24 lawsuits (and counting, possibly) alleging sexual misconduct.

Possibility No. 3: He doesn’t know what he wants.

This seems to be the least likely, because if he truly was undecided about the future, he’d have no reason to stay away from OTA sessions. Indeed, he surely knows by now what he’s looking for from the Ravens.

It will be interesting to see whether he shows up for the mandatory minicamp next week. There’s no reason to think he won’t. That said, there’s no clear reason to explain his handling of his broader business issues to date.

  1. The other possibility is that he wants to join a team where he would have a chance to win a championship.

  2. Quarterbacks that need their legs to be a difference maker are tough to commit long term to, similar to a running back.
If Lamar is unwilling to engage, maybe the best course of action for Baltimore is to let him play through two franchise tags. That gets them a couple more prime years at an actual discount.

  3. Possibility No. 4: He is not being consulted on the talent that is to be drafted or picked up in free agency………Possibility No.5: Still upset that his best wide receiver is not on the team any more…..

  4. Throwing it out there, no one has mentioned it…retirement! Andrew Luck style

  5. He isn’t engaging because he wants to become a FA. He doesn’t want to make waves or otherwise create issues in Baltimore so he won’t engage with anyone in the media nor on social media. In other words he is being very smart and keeping quiet.

What he wants is he wants to succeed TB12 in Tampa or go to Miami. One or the other so he can play closer to his family roots. Miami is the closest but Tampa is the better team and better chance to sign him as it is very likely Brady will retire after this season.

  6. #4 He realizes no free agent WR will play with him and his best friend demanded a trade because Lamar can’t throw

  7. Seems like he wants to prove himself, but most pundits don’t understand cause of their obsession with money.

  8. This works perfectly for the ravens. No one in their right mind thinks this guy will be worth much after a few more years. He’s definitely electric until he’s not the fastest guy on the field any more. As a Ravens fan I’d love to see him get 20 carries a game. He’s an amazing talent but will never be a quality passer other than when defenses have to sell out to stop the run and receivers are wide open – like in 2019. Tag him, run him into the ground and hope for a long shot ring. Then move on. Avoid that long term deal at all costs. Anyone too stupid to accept 150M guaranteed doesn’t deserve it anyway.

Possibility No. 4: He is not being consulted on the talent that is to be drafted or picked up in free agency………
    ————

Players are saying this a lot these days. My guess is that they think consulted means “We’ll let you make all decisions” instead of “We’ll ask your opinion then make our decision.”

  10. Option 4 – He and his mother have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. Example – Lamar has a severe car accident which results in massive injuries which threaten his career, and now no team is offering that mega deal he could have signed yesterday with the Ravens. That is the reality of his situation, and I don’t think he’s looking at it like that, and he should

  11. Maybe he’s just not like all the other prima donna QBs. Maybe he just wanted to do his own training like a lot of veterans do who don’t show up of the optional sessions.

  12. Possibility No. 4: He wants to become a true free agent as soon as humanly possible. This means either accepting a new offer with a no franchise clause designation, or getting the franchise tags out of the way as quickly as possible. He is only 25 years old. Imagine the career earning power he will achieve once the threat of the franchise tag has been eliminated. Certainly there is an injury risk in the meantime, but I imagine he believes it’s worth the risk. The NFL player landscape is rapidly shifting to an NBA world. Lamar probably sees himself as the first billionaire NFL player.

  13. There’s a fourth reason. He and his mom are ignorant when it comes to negotiating contracts.

  14. Possibility #4: Lamar is just a weird guy and there is no logical explanation.

  15. I would say it’s probably a mixture of all 3 and couple that with the fact that the Ravens are probably hesitant to drop a pile of money into the lap of a running QB coming off of injury. No one knows what his shelf life is. Recent QBs that rely on their legs more than their arm seem to have a limited shelf life. The only outlier recently would be Russell Wilson. When Lamar hits 30 and his athleticism is waning do you think he could stand back there and pick apart a defense? The problem for the Ravens is they’ve tied their whole gameplan to his legs and their on the hook for that. They probably have a contract on the table but there’s a sticking point when it comes to guaranteed money. I’m all for athletes making their money but you have to earn it after the fact. Teams don’t have power like they used to but they do have the power to say no.

  16. Lamar marches to his own drummer. He does not care about conventional wisdom.

So, Baltimore rented a top 15 pick for no reason and will waste 5 seasons of it while getting nothing back?

    lol

Explain how DeCosta should keep his job:

  18. I mean they are VOLUNTARY workouts he’s “boycotting” just like Aaron Rodgers and Josh allen

  19. If no one knows what he’s doing, how can anyone possibly think he has any kind of “leverage”?

One thing is certain though…If the season begins without him signing a contract, and he sustains any kind of injury, no matter how minor…he’s going to look really foolish.

  20. He better engage in contract talks soon because if he gets hurt again, he may lose out on a Watson type of contract but he may want out of Baltimore, knowing they run the ball so much.

  21. He’s a great option runner, but the reality is that he is not a good enough of QB. He’s never completed 266 passes or more in a season. He’s a great runner. But he’s on the train to Kaepernick like physical injuries which will limit his mobility or cripple him (and he’s just 25).

  22. Possibility 4: his body is beaten down and he’s considering retirement

Possibility 5: he’s having a mental health meltdown

  23. You’re giving this dude way too much credit.

  24. I think Jackson and a few other ego nerds may find the out in the cold sooner than they think. Jackson could be traded quite soon.

  25. I think he’s worth giving a big contract to, but NO ONE is worth giving that ludicrous Watson contract to.

If I’m the Ravens, if he doesn’t start engaging, I’d hand him the franchise tag and advertise that they’re open for business on a trade. Even two years on the tag would be a lot cheaper than a big contract, and as he has little prospect of being a long-term player there or anywhere, a couple prime draft picks would go a long way toward them getting a good QB in one of the next couple drafts.

He’s one of the biggest difference-makers in the league, but his best hasn’t been good enough so far, and is he getting better? He seems to be dragging his feet and not doing all he can to get better with the team. If that’s not what he wants to be, then shop him.

  26. Option whatever: He realizes teams around league see him as a running back that can make some throws and he is coming to terms with idea of not being tendered a record setting contract extension due to limitations in passing ability.

Possibility No. 4: He is not being consulted on the talent that is to be drafted or picked up in free agency………Possibility No.5: Still upset that his best wide receiver is not on the team any more…..

Possibility No. 6: He’s playing the Kirk Cousins game

  28. Things scare me about Lamar, he doesn’t seem to have a very accurate throw at all. He has a hard throwing arm, he can sling it like Vick. But he was most successful throwing to TE’s in the middle of the field where he doesn’t have to be 100 percent accurate. On the other hand he has always had 3rd string WR’s across the board with no running game. The Lions will give you 2 first rounds next years and a #2 in two years and we will give him the big contract long as you take Goff.

  29. Maybe he wants Greg Roman out and is waiting to sign a long term extension until he can get an offensive coordinator who will attract and not repel star wide receivers.

  30. You did not mention the obvious Franchise tag which automatically caps his salary. No negotiation required. He gets tagged twice and moves on.

  31. Possibility #4: That he changed his number and doesn’t realize he didn’t give the new number to the GM.

    Seriously though, I think it’s #3.

Any player worth his salt has to make a decision: Go the “Brady Route” and leave money on the table to up the odds of achieving greatness (& making wayyyy more money off the field) or just be about the money and get everything/anything you can get your hands on.

It’s a tough call for the guys that truly want to be great.

  32. I wouldn’t want my team to pay him Watson money. However, if Watson’s contract sets the QB bar, 31 other starting QBs deserve more (at least based on off-field behavior).

  33. Possibility 4: He really doesn’t have a strategy at all, or he hasn’t settled on one. This one actually makes the most sense. If you are unsure what to do, do nothing until you are forced to.

  34. Or he knows the ravens can win with Huntley and he’s scared of the competition . Wild thought,he’s reunited with Hollywood in zona as the cards and ravens swap qbs.

  35. OR maybe he has a false sense of entitlement…
Thinking he is way better than reality which I’m sure is part of it at least!

  36. Hard to understand guys that wont share all their thoughts on twitter. Why wont they get with the program?

  37. He’s not a Super Bowl QB. The Raven’s don’t need to make the same mistake Jerry did with Dak.

  38. He is an injury waiting to happen. So the Ravens are wise not to offer him top 5 qb money. I hope they do though, because it will leave their franchise mediocre and cash strapped.

  39. Possibility #5 – He’s a procrastinator.Did he do his 7th grade book report the night before and never read the book?…..oh wait…that was me…never mind

  40. Jackson is clearly headed toward free agency and there is nothing the Ravens can do to stop him. Kirk Cousins provided the blueprint and Lamar is executing it. The Ravens will franchise him twice and then he will hit the open market. Are the Dolphins willing to wait?

  41. Be careful what you wish for. If he did hot free agency you’re going to have to find a team that would be willing to re haul their offense for him along with paying him top dollar. Personally o don’t think his kind of play is sustainable and worth uprooting a teams conventional nfl offense. He’s playing a dangerous game with the ravens who’ve really bent over backwards for him up to this point. He really needs to hire an agent to negotiate this deal imo. Not sure if it’s arrogance or greed that’s driving his decisions to go on his own but it seems foolish.

Throwing it out there, no one has mentioned it…retirement! Andrew Luck style
    ==========================================================================
Andrew Luck retired because his arm fell apart

  43. Lamar will not find a better situation than Baltimore. He is loved by the entire city and they have built the team around him as they better understand his skills and where he is growing. If he leaves he may find more money but he will not have as much success.

  44. I will throw out another wild guess. Jackson might have some type of injury that he doesn’t want the Ravens to know about. Would explain why he won’t negotiate and why he won’t participate in OTAs. As long as doesn’t engage with the Ravens he won’t have to be examined by team doctors. On the other hand he might just be completely out of his mind, lol.

  45. Or possibility 4 which I’ve said from the beginning…It has nothing to do with wanting out but he knows if he waits and is tagged and plays on the tag on consecutive years he allows himself to be a free agent the rest of his career when each contract finishes since the 3rd tag is cost prohibitive.

  46. All 3 of these are possible, BUT shouldn’t he just tell the Ravens what he wants like a grown up would do?

  47. On one hand, by not signing anything yet, he let Watson set the market and it could bring in a lot more cash for Jackson. On the other hand, the dude has earned a total of $9.7M in his career. Had he signed a big deal after 2020 when he was eligible he would have probably made $40M+ just last year. This year he’ll earn $23M, but again that should be $30M+. By my count he’s about $57M behind in career earnings that he now has to make up in that next contract, which is not going to happen. FA must be his end game or he’s just not good at math.

  48. He shouldn’t expected for the Ravens to offer more than Watson makes because Jackson isn’t as good as Watson. Lamar Jackson isn’t a good passer, he’s avg at best and is one of the worst deep passers in the league. If I were the Ravens I’d just franchise tag Jackson and look for his replacement in next years draft.

  49. The perceived lack of any negotiations between Jackson and the Ravens is a real mystery which is hard to understand. The Ravens are one of the few organizations that does not have leaks but when they occur are normally followed with a purge of personnel. The company line that they have not engaged in talks yet may be what both sides have agreed to say while they are in negotiations (possibility #4). The other attribute of the Ravens is that if a player wants out the Ravens accommodate the request rather then have a disgruntled player in the locker room. Recent examples are Hayden Hurst, Orlando Brown and Marquis Brown. If Lamar wants out the ravens could get a a King’s ransom of draft picks for him IF he is healthy and IF he performs well this year. That does not account for him not showing up for OTAs. Finally Jackson or any other player risking injury for a perceived better payday is a fools game. An injury could prevent that payday from ever coming. Take the money now and if warranted renegotiate again later. The perception is Jackson is a selfless leader but not showing up for OTAs hurts that perception unless it is successful in closing a deal which pays him now and protects him in the future.

he probably wants to play RB for the chiefs so he stops having to lose to mahomes in the playoffs every year.

    ———-

Except the Ravens have not played the Chiefs in the playoffs since 2010, when Flacco was the Ravens QB and Matt Cassel was the Chiefs QB.

  51. I’ll run with option 1 and 2 (being paid somewhere else).

Andrew Luck retired because his arm fell apart
    _____________

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Luck’s arm. Andrew retired solely because he has interests other than football.

  53. Has Lamar Jackson saved all his pro salary like Gronk? If not, he should be open to negotiations that could get him financial security for life. For Baltimore, using a tag on him in 2023 and 2024 wouldn’t be a bad deal. It keeps the injury risk on the player and if he stays healthy and productive, makes a tag and trade possible if he really wants out. Baltimore’s offense is unusual and not passing-friendly. But they could change that if they have another QB.

  54. I’m convinced Lamar wants to be franchised tagged once or twice before hitting the open market, which is what will happen if he makes no progress getting signed. That would still make him one of the highest paid QBs in the next few years, and it would give him the flexibility to weigh his options long term – where if he can stay healthy, he’d still be able to sign a big long term contract either with Baltimore or somewhere else in need of a top end QB.

  55. If Lamar wants a fully gaurenteed contract he can wait for the Browns job to open back up.
The rest of the league doesnt have to pay because of the browns ineptitude.

    ————————-
Actually that’s not true either. Luck retired because of persistent ankle/calf injuries.

  57. I don’t think it’s very complicated. He’s due to make $23 million this year in the last year of his deal. There are now six quarterbacks earning more than $40 million a year. I suspect the ravens have offered him somewhere around that number. And I’m sure he’s thinking he be crazy to take it. After all, if he plays out his deal he not only gets a $20 million raise over last year, but then he’s a free agent. If he has a good year, he will most certainly have a record-setting free agent deal. I don’t think he has much of an incentive to negotiate right now. I unless they are going to offer him 50 million a year over five years and he which is what he’s going to get next year anyway, I don’t see it. He’s better off upping his injury insurance policy and waiting it out.

  58. Possibility #4: He’s taking contract negotiating advice from Le’veon Bell.

  59. I do not foresee him playing in Baltimore past this year. I think it’s a combination playing in Roman’s system and money. I do not see the Ravens giving him kings ransom like Watson received. I believe he will be playing in Miami next season.

  60. Lamar Jackson is at the beginning of his downhill slide. It’s been proven over and over again if you take his running away he can’t beat you with his arm, alone. His stats have been going down each year since his high water mark in 2019. He’s already had his first game missing injury and once they start piling up and his mobility is compromised his career will be over.

If the Ravens pay him more money than Deshaun Watson they are more idiotic than the Browns… and that’s a lot of idiocy.

  61. This is not a mystery. DeCosta is smart. Paying Lamar a lot of money would be dumb. Just look at the facts, and forget all the sizzle and smoke and mirrors. He’s been in decline since 2019. He was seriously injured last year. Prior to his injury, in his last seven games– nearly half an NFL season– he was either the worst or 2nd worst QB in the entire league. He can’t win in the playoffs. He can’t throw reliably or accurately. He struggles reading defenses and really struggles handling blitzes. Outside of Ravens fans, and the media who are desperately trying to keep the Lamar hype train and narrative alive for some odd reason, everyone else in the world sees this as plain as day. And most importantly, so does DeCosta. There is no mystery here.
