Tom Brady’s appetite to compete is “going to be gone, soon”

Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady returned to football after a 40-day retirement. How much longer will he go?

Although he has made it clear he doesn’t want a farewell tour, the time to say farewell is coming, soon.

“I had the appetite to compete, and it’s going to be gone soon,” Brady told Dan Patrick regarding the quarterback’s decision to return for another season, via NFL.com. “I mean, there’s no doubt about it and I’ve got to you know, just really appreciate the time I have left because it’s not a lot.”

Brady didn’t say it’s one more year. Many will think it is. And it could be. But Brady will be a free agent in 2023. If there’s a place he can go where he thinks that the deck will be stacked in his favor, maybe he’ll keep going.

Remember, he has said he doesn’t want to end up watching NFL games after he has quit playing and thinking, “These guys suck. I could do way better than that.” With Brady now lined up to work for Fox Sports as the No. 1 analyst once he’s done playing, it’s not as if he’ll be able to avoid watching the games. If “these guys suck,” he’ll be witnessing it, each and every week.

That’s all the more reason until he believes he’s no longer better than the guys who are getting a significant paycheck to throw footballs for a living. That could mean more than one more year of football for Brady — possibly with a third team.

  1. Brady is one of kind. Once he finally does retire it’s over for good. Enjoy his last season……maybe.

  2. Please. Can he just move on already. He obviously is the GOAT. Go out decisively and don’t look like Brett Farve and Jerry Rice.

  3. As long as he has that drive and the ability to play at a high level, he’ll find to difficult to walk away. That said, I don’t see him challenging George Blanda’s record for oldest to play in the NFL.

  4. You’re going to miss him when he’s gone. That kind of greatness is rare.

  5. I had a front row seat to an increadible career. I hope your team has a 20 year run of relavance. SF GB know it. Jerry in Dallas, hire a GM.

  6. Athletes never lose their appetite to compete. How many old guys you think wish they were still out there play that won the game? Tom is a great wordsmith and he’s learned how to play the media better than they ever played him.
    To paraphrase one quote Tom made he said seldom do I say what I really think. Tom may be playing at 50 and will definitely play next year if the right situation is out there, such as Miami.

  7. If Brady is serious about a TV job, and he put his mind to it, he could be great. Maybe he’ll end up being another Frank Gifford. Most people don’t remember when Gifford played. They only knew him as a TV guy. I have a feeling we’ll be watching Brady every Sunday for the next 20 years or so. We’ll have to explain to the youngsters that this guy was a QB.

  8. Closure is extremely difficult. 99% of the guys that play in the NFL don’t get it.

  9. brady is doomed to hellish frustration then because even at 55 he’ll know that he’s better at winning a football game than than the two guys he’s watching – and the rest of us know he’s right.

  10. Last season showed he is still a top 10 QB and game manager even among the current great crop, but i feel this will be his last year, through injury or father time finally calling and he’ll be done

  11. I hope he retires for good after this season. I think we’re all tired of him by now. Enough already.

  12. The wandering QB. Like Favre: “First you say you do and then you don’t. Then you say you will and then you won’t…….. “

  13. “… just really appreciate the time I have left because it’s not a lot…” ME! ME! ME! Look at ME and love ME! Look up egotistical in the dictionary and there’s a picture of Brady and Giselle in the definition.

  14. love brady, but if he is saying the appetite is going to be gone soon, it is already gone.

  15. TB sure seems to be talking a lot lately. Getting his vocal cords ready for the FOX gig?

  16. Brady is a showman. He craves the attention. As long as he keeps receiving same, he ain’t going anywhere.

  17. Say what you will. I surely miss Manning (P. If you wondered). And I do miss Favre. So I’m just happy I can see Brady for as many seasons as I can.

  18. We have been privileged to be witnesses to the career of the greatest athlete in the history of team sports. His relentless discipline, focus and drive are an inspiration to anyone who wishes to excel in their jobs or their avocations. Whatever happens next, whether he plays one or more seasons, is just gravy. There will never be his like again.

  19. Maybe ONLY after he retires, people will fully realize that he revolutionize the way QB plays football and his greatness.

  20. Proof that there are no football gods;

    We’ll probably have to listen to this windbag for the next 20 years.

  21. We have been privileged to be witnesses to the career of the greatest athlete in the history of team sports.

    Yes, watching Jordan was special.

  22. He may be the GOAT, but I don’t understand the negative comparisons to Favre. Favre was legitimately slam- tore up about his decision to retire and his only crime was wanting to finish his career in Green Bay, before they shipped him to a different Conference. He went to the Jets and Vikings, but that was the end of retirement talk. There’s been an article about Brady retiring since he arrived at Tampa Bay, every week, nonstop relentlessly. You may love him but many of us had Brady fatigue 10 years ago..GOAT QB and Diva, by far.

  23. Brady is a football player of a bygone era, like Tom Cruise is the last action movie star in Hollywood. Cherish them while they’re still able to perform because those who are coming next are a massive dropoff in talent.

  24. As he disrespected the officials and other coaches will be fun to see if he gets the same benefit of doubt he has in the past

    Props to the Patriots and Brady for making their divorce amicable.

    The Packers and Favre couldn’t get out of their own way. Both sides made regrettable, drama filled mistakes.

  27. Proof that there are no football god.

    ++++++++++++

    You just don’t know what to watch.

    For example, his 700th TD in OT against Bills. Can you tell anything special in the PLAY (NOT throw)?

    ——
    Top 10 is accurate. 7th in passer rating including a 70 rating against the defense that got depantsed by Josh Allen. Also got shut out – yes shut out – by Taysom Hill’s Saints. Was the main reason why his team was beaten in the playoffs.

    Product of the team around him…like he always was.

  29. For example, his 700th TD in OT against Bills. Can you tell anything special in the PLAY (NOT throw)?

    I’ll consider that rhetorical..

  30. I’ll consider that rhetorical

    ++++++++++++++

    Listen to what Tony Romo said, listen carefully, you will know why the defender was too late to tackle and why it was an easy TD.

    What a QB has to deal with is much much harder than what a basketball player has to

  31. I don’t care if you watch it or not.

    BTW, Pats defense with Brady was WORSE THAN Packers defense with Rodgers on total yards allowed, meaning, Pats defense would be much much worse with Rodgers, and Packers defense would be much better with Brady.

  32. Brady : 2001 to 2019, excluding 2008.
    Rodgers: 2008 to 2021.

    Take average of the ranks on total yards allowed.

  33. Factually incorrect no matter how you want to run those numbers.

  34. It is simple math : Rodgers’s defense was better than Brady’s defense on total yards allowed.

    That is why Belichick’s defense was a PAPER TIGER that couldn’t win even two playoff games in playoff.

  35. 2010, the Packers D may have outranked the Pats. Every other season after? Routinely near the teens. Capers units were trash at the end.

    To roll the 2001-2007 Pats into this? No coincidence that team won 3 of 4. Rodgers has never played with a top ranked D. Brady played with at least 3 over the years. And routinely in the top 5 and top 10.

  36. Would Rodgers be able to play 37 minutes against Falcons in playoff? Would Rodgers be able to play 39 minutes against Chiefs? Do you know how much time Brady played in loss to eagles in SB?

    Don’t expect good defense with a QB like Rodgers.

  37. 2003 and 2004?

    Would Rodgers be able to score 24 or more in back to back playoff games with the squad Brady had?

    Understand why Pats would have won nothing with Rodgers?

  38. 2003 and 2004?
    ============

    Brady as a game manager with the #1 defense.

    Not really helping your argument.

  39. You seem to forget Rodgers was the highest rated QB in playoff history most of his career.

    He still is nearly 10 full points higher than Brady.

    And Brady and Rodgers have almost identical ppg averages in the playoffs.

    Facts, not opinions.

  40. Switch Rodgers and Brady and keep the same players around them on their new teams.

    Rodgers would be winning titles and Brady would be lucky to make the playoffs.

    Facts matter.

  41. Game manager? Why doest it matter how a QB scares 24 or more in back to back playoff ?

    Would Rodgers be able to do it without a top WR? Why didn’t Mahomes dink n dunk with depleted O-Line against Bucs?

    Rodgers,Peyton and Mahomes didn’t do it because they didn’t have the skills to SCORE ENOUGH by dink n dunk.

  42. Superior rating tells nothing about QB except his ability of throwing to WR BEHIND defenders, a meaningless skill with the squad Brady had under Belichick.

  43. BTW, do you know how many bad offense pats played in 2003, 2004, 2016 when they had #1 defense on total points allowed? Go check yourself.

    DON’T claim that defense won the SB when offense had to score 24 or more in back to back playoff games, something Rodgers rarely able to do, and needed tons of talents to do so, something Belichick never gave to his QB.

  44. Superior rating tells nothing about QB except his ability of throwing to WR BEHIND defenders, a meaningless skill with the squad Brady had under Belichick.
    ==========

    I don’t think rating is the end all, be all.

    But it is a great barometer as to how a QB played over a long time period.

  45. Ever heard of “kep ball in front of you”, football 101 for defenders? What does it mean? It means that IT IS HARD TO SCORE ENOUGH WITH ‘EASY’ THROWS THAN WITH BIG PLAYS.

    Go check those games Peyton and Rodgers struggled, in ALL of them, opponent defenses were able to do it, and that is what Brady had to deal with under Belichick. HOW RODGERS AND PEYTON PLAYED IN PLAYOFF WOULD BE HOW THEY WOULD PLAY WITH THE SQUAD GIVEN BY BELICHICK.

  46. Rodgers playoff ppg – 28
    Brady Pats playoff peg – 27

    So it sure looks like the results would be the same. Agreed.

  47. Ya, did Brady ever score less than 27 points with the squad in Bucs?

    Again, Rodgers ability is meaningless with cheap short slot receivers. If he had the skills, Packers would have invested lot more resources on defense, but Packers couldn’t, why? because Rodgers needed lot lot of talents around to be able to score 24 or more in back to back playoff games, and he still never score 24 or more in 3 consecutive playoff games.

  48. Also, Rodgers didn’t throw unless there were safe throws, like to WR behind defenders, otherwise he would just hold the balls and ran out of bounds.

    That is why he had good QBR even when he struggled badly, also the reason he couldn’t make back to SB, because when he struggled, he needed defense to HOLD THREE QUARTERS, something NO defense couldn’t do if defenders didn’t have break

  49. Rodgers,Peyton and Mahomes didn’t do it because they didn’t have the skills to SCORE ENOUGH by dink n dunk.
    ==========

    You missed Rodgers playing in prehistoric McCarthy west coast offense?

  50. Again, Rodgers ability is meaningless with cheap short slot receivers. If he had the skills, Packers would have invested lot more resources on defense, but Packers couldn’t, why?
    ===========

    Check their draft history.

    Scores of top picks wasted on defensive busts before they forced Ted Thompson out.

  51. Also, Rodgers didn’t throw unless there were safe throws, like to WR behind defenders, otherwise he would just hold the balls and ran out of bounds.
    ============

    I’ll take that over Favre giving games away.

  52. Keep at it all you like.

    You’re not moving the needle with your opinions here.

  53. Rodgers couldn’t score 24 or more in back to back playoff games, that was what Pats needed to win SB since 2003. So Pats had no chance winning SB with Rodgers no matter how you twist.

    Brady played 38 minutes in SB against Panthers, 37 minutes against in SB, 39 minutes against Chiefs in AFCCG. Why didn’t Rodgers do it to help his defense? Simple, he didn’t have the intelligence to do what Brady did.

    Do you know how much time Brady played against Eagles in SB? 26 minutes. See how Patriots defense would be like with Rodgers?

  54. Tom Brady is a nice little system QB with a little arm who was suspended for cheating. He ain’t anything special. Never was.

    Chad Pennington or Marc Bulger get drafted by the Patriots and the results would be the same with multiple Super Bowl wins. Those guys could just as easily benefit as much as Brady has over the years by elite teammates and coaching.

  55. Belichick will be fully exposed in next two seasons. Then Brady will get the credits he deserves.

    You love the big throws IN WHICH ONLY WR CAN SEE THE BALLS? fine, but can you name a thing other than throwing balls that makes throwing deep than dink n dunk?

  56. Don’t like your own posts right after posting, that is l@me, for God sake.

  57. Then Brady will get the credits he deserves.
    —-
    Brady will get no credit for anything no matter what. He is a proven cheater and a little weakling arm QB who pretends to be great because of his cheating and great teammates.

  58. I’ll be rooting for Mahomes/Burrow to put an end to this lunacy.

    The Brady fan boys just can’t stand if anyone is mentioned favorably.

  59. Remember that time when the Cheatin Tom fan club talked all that trash last year that Brady would hang 70 on Belichick and his team? Gotta hand it to them they were right. A 70 passer rating. That’s awesome it really is! 😂

    Yup. Very weird that they’re so insecure.

    Funny how I don’t hear Peyton Manning or Joe Montana fans do this. Just the Tommy lovers.

  61. You should rewatch Packers vs Cardinals, see how Rodgers played without Davante Adams

  62. You love the big throws IN WHICH ONLY WR CAN SEE THE BALLS? fine, but can you name a thing other than throwing balls that makes throwing deep than dink n dunk?
    =========

    The overwhelming number of Rodger completions have been on short timing patterns. He’s played in a west cost derivative, literally, his entire career.

    Perkins-Erhardt dink and dunk is superior somehow?

    .. didn’t Brady leave for this very reason? Whatever version of Air Coryell Arians is running being more QB friendly?

  63. What were you thinking when Rodgers failed to deliver the winning score against 49ers? What were you thinking when burrow failed to deliver the winning score?

    That is something Brady had to do a lot of times. Rodgers would have won SB with Patriots? How delusional!!

  64. Perkins- Erhardt?

    In dink n dunk, a completed pass doesn’t even give you first down, OK? It is completely different from any other offense system.

    BECAUSE IT WORKED ONLY WITH BRADY, IT WAS BRADY’S SYSTEM ALL THE TIME .

    I wouldn’t bother. The Tommy fan club doesn’t know anything about the sport and they weren’t following football anyway before 2001. They are not Patriots fans.

    You could say Rodgers is great at using the urinal and the Tommy fan club would be all triggered NO STOP IT BRADY IS BETTER 😭 and write some long paragraphs that nobody else will read.

    😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  66. Whose playing style is better for a TEAM, Brady’s or Rodgers?

    Obviously, it was Brady’s way. That demonstrates how clueless those stat lovers are. Enjoy regular seasons, and pray in Jan, which will be in vain.

  67. What were you thinking when Rodgers failed to deliver the winning score against 49ers?
    ===========

    They lost in a special teams gaffe.

    Guess Rodgers should have been out there blocking on the FG team.

    This was a problem all year. Not that you would know.

    The Packers got what was coming to them.

  68. Perkins- Erhardt?
    ==========

    Maybe do a little research.

  69. Don’t claim people from 500 years ago knew how to make plane because he dreamed of flying, OK? Whose system depends on who is able to realize it, OK?

    Didn’t Belichick defense allow Panthers to tie in SB, and against Chiefs in AFCCG? If Rodgers was as great as you think, why couldn’t he help his team when it is in trouble?

  70. I hope Brady retires “suddenly”. Say, week 2 about 5 mins into the second quarter.

  71. Don’t claim people from 500 years ago knew how to make plane because he dreamed of flying, OK? Whose system depends on who is able to realize it, OK?
    ==========

    The offense put 4 teams in the Super Bowl before Brady left UM.

    Here endeth the lesson.

  72. Brady is the NFL GOAT. Jordan is the greatest player across all U.S. sports. I don’t know enough about international sports (Soccer, F1 racing etc.) to make the claim that is was the best the world has ever seen. Rodgers is a Hall of Famer. I have enjoyed watching all three play.
