For the second consecutive offseason, the NFL Management Council has disciplined the Cowboys for violating the Collective Bargaining Agreement’s rules governing offseason work.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the team was penalized for physical OTA practices.

Todd Archer of ESPN reports the Cowboys will lose an organized team activity day for 2023 and coach Mike McCarthy will pay a $100,000 fine.

The Cowboys were one of three teams found in violation last year, with the team paying a $100,000 fine and McCarthy a $50,000 fine. They also lost an OTA day for this offseason as a result.

McCarthy later said the Cowboys were trying to do things right way.

“I think there were seven to nine plays that we looked at as a group, and frankly, the majority of them involved younger players, so to me it’s a learning experience,” McCarthy said last summer. “I think like anything in life, if you’re punished for trying to do too much the right way as opposed to not doing enough the right way, I think that’s a healthy experience to learn from.”

  1. I don’t blame them. McCarthy needs every second possible after the meltdown against the Niners. I would cheat too.

  2. Cowboys can be physical in OTAs probably a good idea, because come playoffs, they are not physical enough.

  3. Good for the Boys’. My hope is terminator 1 and terminator 2 are getting geared up… This team needs that physical mindset.

  4. Last year’s fine wasn’t enough if McCarthy did this again. Next infraction McCarthy should sit out a game.

  5. The league continues on its path to flag football….Todays players are as soft as ice cream that’s been left in the sun

  6. NFL doesn’t know how to let teams run their program and Cowboys can’t interpret the rules so hell everyone gets fined. Only in 2022

  7. McCarthy will be lucky to last the season as coach.
Dan Quinn interim head coach by December of 2022…

  8. It’s getting ridiculous. I get it that you don’t want so much contact that someone gets hurt badly, especially a vet. But at the same time it is football and in order to get better you gotta practice and that means pads and some contact. Make it for mandatory for rookies and P-squad players and voluntary for the rest if need be, but these guys need real practice and reps.

  9. So stupid. Players already get more days off work than most humans. They get a multiple month long vacation.

  10. Cowboys penalized for a minor practice infraction

Meanwhile the Rams and Saints seem to have an unlimited salary cap…

    .
but you’re not doing it the right way…lol

  12. “I think like anything in life, if you’re punished for trying to do too much the right way as opposed to not doing enough the right way I think thats a healthy experience to learn from”

    Brilliant

  13. Cowboys get lots of eyes for a team that always comes up short. At least they are in a minor league division which provides an opportunity to tease.

  14. $100,000 in your bank account used to mean something, even to professional coaches, but times have gotten so good for these people they can now voluntarily piss it away on fines that they recieve for knowingly breaking the rules.to the average football fan who has to pay for overpriced tickets to see the games and fill the stadiums $100,000 is still alot of money that could change their lives but to MM its just Monopoly money.

  15. Going into his 16th season as a HC and still can’t get it right. I’m sure the bargaining agreement was trying to mitigate the risk of injury from physical contact before games start to be played. McCarthy is just “trying to do too much the right way,” according to him.

  16. When McCarthy coached the Packers they had a good QB and offense, sloppy defense and special teams, penalized a lot and(with one exception) couldn’t win big games. Cowboys fans: sound familiar?

  17. They ought to fine him for his hideous clock management skills and decision-making ability. And then double it for wasting Aaron Rodgers’s prime.

  18. They need all the time they can get for the 2 minute drill and timeouts Right Coach??
