Packers accelerate payment schedule of Aaron Rodgers’s $40.8 million roster bonus

After Aaron Rodgers decided earlier this year to stay with the Packers, the Packers gave him a new contract. Under the terms of that contract, Rodgers has yet to receive any payment.

The deal includes a 2022 roster bonus of $40.8 million. Via Field Yates of ESPN.com, the payment previously was due to be made on December 31. That has now changed. Rodgers will receive $20.8 million by June 20, and the remaining $20 million by September 30.

Here’s a theory. Or at least a hypothesis. With Rodgers saying earlier this month that he thinks about retirementall the time,” the structure of the new contract avoided any potential repayment obligation, if Rodgers had decided to retire before the 2022 season began. The change in the timing of the payment, with more than half of it being paid next week, could be a result of Rodgers deciding, after attending last week’s mandatory minicamp, that he’s indeed all in for 2022.

Although he could still retire and pay back the $20.8 million, it’s a lot cleaner to have never received the money. If nothing else, taking $20.8 million becomes a symbolic gesture that Rodgers is indeed ready to go for the coming season, despite his admission that retirement is always on his mind.

  1. He isn’t going to retire and he has no intention to retire. He is just a diva who loves the attention. I want to see how this diva responds to the worse loss of his career. 1 TD in a home playoff game is inexcusable.

  2. Maybe it was just “hurry up and give him some money before he decides this contract, just like the last, isn’t good enough”.

  3. He’s value is beyond that. He’s a model American that this country needs right now!

  4. None of it matters. If Rodgers doesn’t deliver a SuperBowl victory, right now, this year, he’s a goner. If he doesn’t win a SuperBowl this year, good riddance.

  5. Meanwhile, former Lion Matt Stafford who got his wish and went to a contender (on the west coast where Aaron is from) is gearing up for a second straight Superbowl. Rodgers is gearing up for another one and done playoff run.

  6. Every thing Rodgers says the media analizes….its rediculous !!! Most of us think of retirement for about 40 years. He will be done when an injury happenes or he is ready to be done.

  7. Why pay him all the money now? You know he’ll extort you in the off season again.

  8. Now that Rodgers just got his money he will demand a new contract because he knows Packer mgmt is kissing his butt and he will get it

Right??! I’m sure the Packers will take a 100 million cap hit ($99.778..) to unload him next year…

  10. Waste of money. 10 years and hasn’t sniffed a Super Bowl. Pathetic.

4 NFC Title games isn’t sniffing the Super Bowl?

2 of them the D gave them no chance to win (81 points allowed)

Another, he had a double-digit lead in the closing minutes only to have the rug ripped out from under him.

The Packers have raced to the table to pay him each of his last 3 contracts.

How about if he gets a covid shot and pretends he’s sorry you think he lied?

  13. There is zero chance he wasn’t playing this year, regardless of any retirement huffing and puffing. Gonna be tough to win a SB now though — the AFC is loaded and the NCF will be tougher. The best window to get there for the Pack was last two years. And yeah, yeah, yeah, I know my favorite team can’t even see the window. . . . .

Not only did rodgers lie. He became a petulant bully when he was caught lying. And the Packers knew he was lying and flaunting the rules all along but were too scared of rodgers at this point, having already pissed him off for drafting love, to say anything about it. Shame.

  15. I don’t “think” Rodgers lied. I heard him. He lied. He’s a liar. Just like Favre. Wealth and privilege gone to their heads.

The world agrees on this fact. I was in a restaurant in Seattle when the packers lost to the 49ers. (Seattle fans do no like sf). The entire place erupted in cheering at the packers losing. Because of roders lying and petulant bullying. And nothing has changed.

Rodgers has always been a liar. He lied when he went on Conan and lied about Barr. The point is the has caught up to me. Everyone now knows the kind of person Rodgers really is
