New England’s classic uniforms are back, for at least one game in 2022.

The Patriots announced today that they will wear their red jerseys and throwback helmets featuring the “Pat Patriot” logo, a Revolutionary War soldier snapping a football.

There’s no immediate word on how many times the Patriots will wear the throwbacks, or for which games.

A year ago, the league announced a policy that gave teams the opportunity to use two different helmets starting in the 2022 season. That proved to be a popular move with fans who like alternate and throwback uniforms, and several teams plan to take advantage of the rule this season.

Teams can pair the second helmet with alternate, throwback or Color Rush uniforms, so long as they follow all league policies on ensuring that all alternate helmets are properly fitted, and that all players are provided with sufficient opportunity to wear the alternate helmets in practice prior to wearing them in a game.

Player safety was the primary reason the NFL previously told teams to stop using alternate helmets: Teams wanted every player to have one helmet that fit him properly, and not to alter it during the season. But the new policy addresses those concerns by requiring teams to have a new set of alternate helmets for every player on the roster, to ensure that all alternate helmets are the same make, model and size as the player’s primary helmet, and by requiring players to get fitted for both their primary and alternate helmets at the same time in training camp.

  1. Too bad they don’t play the Buccaneers this season.
Creamsicle Bucco Bruce vs. Pat Patriot would be a treat for us old guys.

  2. Great. Love the look, wouldnt want it as the primary scheme, but its nice once a year to throw it back.

  3. Can’t wait for the TItans to wear the Oilers throwbacks. Houston will be pissed, but what a great uniform!

  4. Can we just turn back the clock to 1976 and have all the teams that were in the league at that time wear their throwbacks?

  5. Great helmet, and the red in the Russell jerseys really popped. Hoping that Nike gets that right.

  6. The Patriots are returning to mediocrity, so it only makes sense that they wear the uniforms that remind everyone of that.

  7. I am more interested in whether or not they can stop Josh Allen for even a single possession

  8. How appropriate! Now they’ll not only be playing like crummy Patriots teams of the 70’s — they’ll look like them, too!

  9. This is great news for all of us fans!!! Those Pats and the Bucs are super slick.

  10. I’ve been a Patriot fan since the late 70’s. Those uniforms bring back horrible memories. I don’t know why people want them back, they are the uniforms of losers.

  11. Sorry I know I’m in the minority but I like the “flying elvis” logo better. I know it’s sacrilege to say it…….but I never did really care for their old uniforms.
