A full-season suspension would push Deshaun Watson’s entire contact back by a year

Much was made of the fact that the Browns gave Deshaun Watson a base salary for 2022 of only $1 million, given that the approach would reduce dramatically the financial consequences of, for example, a six- or eight-game suspension. If Watson misses all of 2022, it doesn’t matter.

A full-season suspension by rule would toll Watson’s contract for a year. His $1 million salary would move from 2022 to 2023, supplanting the $46 million he’s due to make next year. And he would be under contract to the Browns for five full seasons beyond 2022, not four.

Basically, he would endure 12 months without pay, making it a true suspension of his career. He’d also be a potential free agent not in 2027 but in 2028.

That’s actually good news for the Browns, since it simply delays the commencement of the relationship for a year and extends it by a year on the back end. Whether it would be good for Watson or the Browns for Watson to try to get back into his pre-2021 form after not playing for two full years would be a different question.

  1. Why do I get the feeling that the Browns already knew this was coming when they offered him that unprecedented contract?

They get to keep him on their team for 6 years and in essence they are paying absolutely nothing while he sits out an entire season.

$230 million for SIX years of which the QB will play five isn’t nearly as bad of a deal as $230 million for five years of which the QB will only play 4.

  2. So Watson would be paid $45M to sit in 2022 after being paid $10.5M when he refused to play in 2021???

That’s a heck of a reward for someone who did what he did. Nice job, NFL.

  3. Watson should negotiate and agree to a 16-game suspension. That would screw the Browns over this year, while not tolling his contract. I know he wants to fight and come out with no discipline – but that’s not realistic regardless of how the suits are settled. He’s better off negotiating something that doesn’t toll the contract and incorporates a waiver for any other potential discipline for furture allegations. The NFL benefits by not having a drawn out appeal process. Only the Browns lose.

So, maybe, just maybe, Brownies front office is dumb…….. like a fox ????

  5. Seems well thought out by the Browns. This would be two full years without playing in the prime years of his career. But given how long QBs play these days maybe that doesn’t mean much?

  6. Then suspend him for 16 games and the playoffs… don’t reward the Browns for their actions. by letting his contract toll.

  7. He should be put on the Commissioner’s List for all of 2022 and be paid his measly $1 million salary, with the excuse that we need to see his court cases play out. Then next off season lay the hammer of a full season suspension. $45 million and 3 full seasons lost.

But, you’re ok with watson getting something and not playing (more than he already has)?

  9. It’s hard when you commit that many crimes. Fame and money can only get you out of so much.

  10. Said it since the Browns signed Watson. Jimmy G is going to Cleveland. Perfect fit as Stefanski runs the Shanahan offense

  11. Or instead of the narrative that the Browns were protecting Watson’s money in case of a suspension when they signed him and only had him making $1 Million in base salary for 2022 to minimize Watsons financial hit from a suspension….The more likely scenario was the Browns were smart and structured it this way so that any suspension of Watson for 2022 would not have Watsons monster salary eating up precious cap space in 2022 for a player not available to play….

They have a ton of cap space for 2022. The smart move would have been to get as much of his salary on the books now and have $40m more to spend over the rest of the contract. 2022 is wasted and as of now they have the worst cap situation after 2023, which is the first year he’ll actually be helpful to the team. It’s clear they did this to entice him to come to the factory.

  13. The idea that Watson was given a sweetheart, suspension friendly contract is absurd and needs to be put to rest. It’s great red meat for the pitchfork crowd, but is based in zero reality and ignores what the Browns and MANY other teams do to work around salary caps. Look at these 2022 base salaries (per Spotrac)

    Deshaun Watson – $1,035,000
    Denzel Ward – $1,035,000
    Myles Garrett – $1,035, 000
    David Njoku – $1,035,000

Cooper, Clowney, Chubb and Teller also in this ball park. Do the Browns expect all those other players to get suspended? PLEASE, knock it off with this tired narrative.

  14. DeeShawn will be using the excuse of “rust” when he comes back. He’ll be lucky to reach the levels of Ryan Leaf at that point.

  15. Either fire him with a permanent ban or suspend him for a period where he experiences a financial penalty. The contract has to be worked around with respect to the penalty.

  16. Thanks for explaining it PFT. It’s what I thought. The Browns feeding a predator and getting rewarded for it. May as well throw in an extra 1st round pick for pulling the rug out of Mayfields status. Hmmm. The NFL has tried to give the Browns the advantage and they’ve not succeeded. Well, maybe next decade. We will see!
