The Philadelphia Stars were the best team in the first iteration of the USFL, winning the league championship in two of the USFL’s three seasons. And now the Stars may win the title in the USFL 2.0 as well.

Philadelphia beat the New Jersey Generals 19-14 today to advance to next week’s USFL championship game.

Although the USFL hasn’t really caught on with football fans, averaging just 715,000 viewers per game on TV and playing in front of largely empty stands in Birmingham, the quality of play has been solid. Today’s game was an exciting, back-and-forth battle that was in doubt until the final minute.

Unlike the regular season, in which every game was played in Birmingham, the playoffs are in Canton, Ohio, which appeared to have a slightly larger crowd than the typical regular-season USFL games.

In next week’s championship game, Philadelphia will play the winner of tonight’s game between the New Orleans Breakers and Birmingham Stallions. Breakers-Stallions kicks off at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.

The championship game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 3, on Fox.

  1. Hard hitting game, several big plays. Entertaining.

Will see what the future holds. Can’t see two spring leagues kicking next year. Not enough talent. I’ll put my $ on the Rock and the ABC / ESPN backing.

  2. The USFL is the Dud Heard ‘Round the World. An audience of 715,000 degenerate gamblers won’t last long.

  3. What kind of pathetic life do you have to have to watch USFL football. Get a life. Half of NFL football is unwatchable let alone the USFL. I have zero interest amd have never and will never watch USFL football

  4. Is it me or is it just silly they have city names when they don’t play there. However the games have not been that bad.

Judging by your username i can understand why football lacks quality for you.

  6. Great game and look forward to the game at 8 pm. I will be glad when they can actually play in their own cities.

  7. The cream will eventually rise to the top.
Many of these players were on NFL practice squads or bottom of the roster fringe guys.
There are also a number of them who’ve been away from the game for several years. Very few of them are straight out of college. College guys are going to want to try the NFL first, which makes sense because there’s more money involved.
I predict a significant jump in the quality of play next season.

What kind of pathetic life do you have to have to need to comment about things you know nothing about? If you have never watched then your opinion is as meaningless as the Cowboys.

  9. The USFL has been great. It has been a memorable 1st season. Congrats to the Philadelphia Stars for making it to the championship. The USFL championship will be July 3rd in Canton, OH. Come on America, don’t miss out!!

  10. In 2023, I would like to see the USFL teams play in their own cities. The Stars should play at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. It will be sold out with everybody wearing red and yellow. Go Stars!!

  11. I didn’t go out of my way to watch games but when they were on and I watched them, they were entertaining. It was good football with well matched teams made up of well matched players. even if they were second tier players, they were all second tier players so the playing field was level. I enjoyed the same sample I saw. They just don’t have the draw of NFL teams who have built a local fan base over years.

  12. Very enjoyable season in the what is for me the doldrums of spring. The football got better as he season went on (two weeks practice before the start of the season was not enough- it took about 2-3 more weeks of game time to start seeing things happen). Whether it survives or not is up to the powers that be.

  13. That punt return for a touchdown reminded me of Desean Jackson scoring a touchdown on a punt return to win the game against the Giants.

  14. I didn’t realize the All Birmingham Football League was still playing. So I guess the championship game is the Birmingham Stars vs. the Birmingham Stallions.
