Julian Edelman: A lot of guys got mad at Jimmy G not playing through pain in New England

Last year, former Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett said teammates lost respect for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo when he sat out a game with a shoulder injury in 2016, requiring the Patriots to turn to third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett during Tom Brady‘s Deflategate suspension.

Julian Edelman is on Bennett’s side.

Edelman said on the I Am Athlete podcast that a lot of the players in the Patriots’ locker room questioned why Garoppolo couldn’t tough it out when his teammates needed him.

“Jacoby, he tore ligaments in his thumb in the win against [the Texans in Week 3]. So we go into Week 4 and I guess Jimmy was practicing and then decided not to play. Jacoby played with no ligaments in his thumb, which you can’t do that as a quarterback. You can’t grip [the football],” Edelman said, via Boston.com. “A lot of guys got mad at it. I’m not going to lie, I got mad about it. I sacrificed my body all day long. I was taking shots for this, numbing up that, ribs, broken ribs, shoulders, Grade 3 hanging on by limbs just to play. I can understand why Marty thinks like that.”

Edelman also said that, given the contract Garoppolo got from the 49ers after the Patriots traded him the next year, it might have paid off financially for Garoppolo to prioritize his own health.

“You also have to look, hey, [Garoppolo] got paid $30 million,” said Edelman. “So maybe I’m the dumb guy who didn’t make as much money to sacrifice for that team. I guess I played for the memories, not the money.”

Garoppolo, who is currently recovering from another shoulder injury, will likely be traded or released by the 49ers before the regular season starts. Edelman doesn’t seem to think his next team will be getting the right kind of franchise leader.

  1. There’s something to be said about sacrifice but health is pretty cool, ngl

  2. Impossible to form an opinion. Only the injured person knows how he feels.

  3. Remember all the donkeys pushing for the Steelers to sign this guy. Once again the team leadership was on the right side of a social media bandwagon.

  4. Garoppolo played through shoulder and thumb injuries throughout the Niners playoff run.

  5. Not often that you see a QB called out by his teammates. Jimmy G has always been overrated.

  6. Impossible to form an opinion. Only the injured person knows how he feels.
    ….
And yet it seems as though opinions were formed by his teammates.

  7. Somebody should set up a meeting so Jimmy G can meet Jack Youngblood, for a different perspective on playing in pain.

  8. And Baker Mayfield “played through the pain” and the team suffered because of how it limited him. A lot of guys loved him for that, but he probably won’t be the Browns QB this year, so maybe it isn’t always so black and white.

  9. Really? Trashing an ex teammate and basically calling him soft? Come on.

That’s something I’d expect to hear from some players in this league and Edelman isn’t one of them. Surprised. Can’t say I like or respect that.

  10. It’s funny, when the injured player plays, and plays well – he is lauded. When the injured player plays, (Baker Mayfield) and doesnt play well – people criticize them for playing and having their ego get in the way of the team. And of course if you are injured and don’t play, your manhood and commitment to the team is challenged.

  11. Regardless, still a winning QB and should have a ring if not for Shanahan. Not sure why this is being brought up now.

Everyone claims to need every nickle to feed their family come contract time but then they throw away money playing through injuries which shorten their career or reduce their quality of play which causes them to lose future money.

Baker Mayfield should’ve gone the Jimmy G route, no question. Jimmy G has made untold millions from the hot tub because when he plays, he only plays healthy, so you only get the best version of Jimmy G (when he’s on the field).

Mayfield played through injury which affected his throwing and the narrative at the end of the season wasn’t how tough he was, it’s how bad he was. That perception, made while he played through injury, has most likely cost him millions. It was the wrong decision by Baker to play through the injury and it was the wrong decision by the team to allow him to play through it but you can pretty much guarantee that when the Browns make a decision, it’s going to be the wrong one.

I think you missed the context/point of his mates opinions entirely.
They didn’t care how poor little Jimmy “felt”.
They knew how THEY felt, playing with broken bones, and grade three injuries, and forcing a QB with literally no ligaments connecting his thumb to play.
And their assessment was that he could have/should have played.

  14. If you list to the interview, Edelman didn’t like it that Jimmy backed out on game day, rather than Thursday.
If you are good to go Thursday then don’t back out at the last minute.

  15. Seeing how Jimmy just played through torn ligaments in his thumb through the entire playoff run of three games just last year then a shoulder injury against Dallas, it’s odd that this is coming out now. Jimmy is a tough guy, maybe he just didn’t want to jeopardize his future by sustaining a serious injury in New England. In retrospect, it looks like he made the right move at the time.

  16. Jimmy. Said to be good but what does he have to show for it? Very badly thrown pass in the Snoopy Bowl to a wide open receiver.

  17. I’ll take a decision by Jimmy G over Edelman, any day of the week. Edelman is just a loudmouth, w/ a Napoleon complex.

  18. Classless. If players don’t like to talk about other players’ money, they shouldn’t talk about their injuries,

  19. Given how close friends Edelman and Brady are and now Edelman taking shots at Jimmy G, we can pretty much conclude who Brady was referring to in his “you are still sticking with that …” comment.

  20. Maybe now we know why he was traded, and why the Pats did not try to get him back.

  21. There are plenty of tough players on the niners squad and they seem to love him. Plus he did play through injuries to his shoulder and thumb this year and, unfortunately, was limited due to them.

  22. Classless, and completely unnecessary. And how does he know what Jimmy was experiencing in terms of injuries and thresholds?

No one will ever doubt Edelman’s toughness. One of the toughest players I’ve ever seen. But what a lame comment to make about a former teammate.

  23. If you don’t think you can play well enough to win the game then you do everyone a favor by sitting. He is well loved by his 49er teammates and has handled himself very well throughout injuries, losses, and Try Lance. I have nothing but respect for him.

  24. I do not think he is very good, and he is always injured, but he also does try to play trough them quite often. Only the big ones take him out. Maybe as a backup looking for a payday he was different.

  25. Love Edelman, but sharing locker room stuff like that is out of bounds. Especially for a guy who’s career and future earnings are up in the air. You just don’t do that. Shame on you Edelman. Find another way to stay relevent.

  26. Jimmy G has always been injury prone and the 49ers were fools for giving him that large contract. Edelman is speaking the truth about the lack of toughness Jimmy has. 49ers will have to pay with mediocrity soon. I doubt Edelman or Bennett will be the last ones to call him out for it.

Yeah. I’d expect better from him.

Or you can look at the evidence: Jimmy G played through torn ligaments on his thumb and shoulder injury. His teammates love him and you can say that Niners players are tough for sure. So maybe Edelman or Bennett have an axe to grind.
Unfortunately, Jimmy held the niners back on several key occasions. There’s a good chance that they have two (at least 1) super bowl victories over the last 3 years.

  29. Edelman is speaking the truth about the lack of toughness Jimmy has.

Jimmy played through plenty of injuries last year including playoffs. If he really lacked toughness his teammates wouldn’t be supporting their QB.

Being injury prone has nothing to do with lack of toughness. Disappointed that Edelman would say something like that it’s beneath him.

I tend to agree. there’s a big difference between being a temporary starter/backup on a rookie salary and being in the playoffs while having a huge salary
