The door likely slams shut on Cam Newton, with the Panthers or any team

Last year, the Panthers brought back quarterback Cam Newton for a second stint. It sold tickets and created excitement. It didn’t generate many wins.

In the aftermath of the draft, G.M. Scott Fitterer told #PFTPM that Newton could possibly return again to the Panthers. The trade for Baker Mayfield likely slams that door shut.

A slew of injuries at the position could change things, obviously. But with Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Matt Corral, there’s simply no room for Newton.

Then there’s the fact that Newton can’t really be just a guy on the depth chart. He’s revered by teammates. At a minimum, the starter would have to have a sufficiently strong grip on his job to not feel threatened by that. Mayfield may not be in the best position to shrug at Newton’s presence on the depth chart, if the Panthers trade Sam Darnold.

Newton recently made the case to still be a starter. No team has shown any interest in signing him this year. The Panthers, for business reasons in what fundamentally is an entertainment business, were a good option. They’re off the table for now, and they likely will be for all of the coming season — barring very significant and unexpected changes.

  1. Why is he revered in the locker room? Because he won some games 7-10 seasons ago?

  2. Remember when he got destroyed in the Super Bowl and the narrative was, “he WILL be back and multiple times”? Yeah, that kid warming up in the commercial laughs at that too.

  3. One of the most over rated QB’s ever. In 11 years he had a winning record three times. Ended with a 85.2 QBR. Which is abysmal in todays NFL.

  4. Cam has been terrible for some time. Cam looked pretty good the 1st week as a starter for NE against Seattle but was awful from that point on.

  5. Put a fork in him Hes done for good.He was destined to fail after he didn’t try to recover that fumble in the Supe rBowl.

  6. Peak Cam Newton was fun to watch but it’s been 5-6 years since he’s been that guy. Injuries suck but that’s the reality of the NFL.

  7. He is revered in the locker room because he is a consummate professional day in and day out, bonds easily with his teammates, and is the unquestioned leader on the field. Father time has caught up though and he is no longer good enough

  8. Got alligator arms in the Super Bowl and has always been more concerned about what hat and outfit he wears than actually trying to be a professional. He’ll be broke in a couple of years…

  9. I like to think of Cam as the quarterback in his prime in Carolina who visited a dying boy’s Halloween party and brought an ice cream truck with him.

  10. Dude is more interested in how he looks at post game press conference than on the field

As I recall, Dan Marino also got destroyed in a Super Bowl.

  12. Newton is not wanted by the Panthers and other NFL teams because he is a locker room cancer. Not a team player and only causes distractions within the team. His career is over

  13. He’s done.
The recent tape doesn’t lie, nostalgia ‘the old Cam is still out there, we can fix him!’ does.

  14. He was an awesome college QB carrying a team that had no other players make the NFL to a national title; however, his star sure has fallen in the NFL. Kind of sad.

  15. Cam always left the impression that he never read the playbook. His performance at NE was always panic and flop sweat or improvising because he didn’t know who the secondary receivers were or the routes. Cam was not a good fit in NE and that experience ruined him.

  16. comparing him to dan marino, come on, that is 1 of the most ridiculous comparisons in history. he may have beena leader and revered 10 yrs ago, but now he is looked at as a joke in the locker room, im sure the younger guys are like nice outfit boomer!
