Which teams should be considering a trade for Jimmy Garoppolo?

Over the weekend, we put together a list of the full universe of teams that should be considering the possibility of trading for Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Now that the Panthers have landed Mayfield, 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo becomes the next veteran signal-caller to potentially land with a new team.

So which teams should be considering making a play for Garoppolo? Here’s our attempt to identify the full list of franchises, in no particular order — whether he’s traded or eventually released.

The Browns.

If the Browns lose Deshaun Watson to a full-season suspension, they need to decide whether to go with Jacoby Brissett or someone else. Garoppolo could be the someone else. The key becomes the financial side of the equation and San Francisco’s trade expectations. With the Browns getting a fifth-round pick in 2024 that can become a fourth-round selection, the 49ers shouldn’t be looking for much more.

The Steelers.

If rookie Kenny Pickett won’t be ready, the question becomes whether Garoppolo would be better than Mitch Trubisky. Many would say that, despite Garoppolo’s inability to get the 49ers over the top, he is.

The Falcons.

All due respect to Marcus Mariota, but Jimmy Garoppolo seems like a better option, if the goal is to win games in 2022 and not simply let nature take its course en route to a top draft pick in 2023.

The Lions.

Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Jared Goff? Advantage Garoppolo.

The Seahawks.

It’s still not clear whether they had any real interest in Baker Mayfield. Is Garoppolo better than Geno Smith or Drew Lock? Probably. Would the 49ers and Seahawks do that deal? Not likely, but it wouldn’t be unprecedented for a quarterback to be traded to a division rival (Donovan McNabb, Drew Bledsoe come to mind).

The Saints.

As mentioned in conjunction with Mayfield, the Saints were one of the teams pursuing Deshaun Watson. Is Garoppolo a better option than Jameis Winston? The Saints would have to make that assessment.

The Texans.

Plenty of connections exist between Garoppolo and the Texans executives who worked in New England when Garoppolo was there. Is he better than Davis Mills? Yes. The question is whether the Texans prefer to let Mills try to find a ceiling that could be higher than Garoppolo’s.

The 49ers.

Keeping Garoppolo has always been an option. Would they do it at $25 million for 2022? That would be foolish. Could they work out a new deal now with the understanding he’ll take less, potentially earn some of it back if he plays, and become a free agent in March? He’d have to want to do that. Comments he made earlier this year would suggest that he doesn’t.

The Dolphins.

We meet again, TuAnon. Is Garoppolo currently better than Tua? That’s the question. And new coach Mike McDaniel, who worked with Garoppolo in San Francisco, likely has seen enough from both to know the answer.

However it plays out, the sooner it’s resolved, the better for Garoppolo. He needs to have a chance to get ready for the 2022 season. He needs to flip that $25 million non-guaranteed salary into something that has some real money behind it.

  1. No rookie QB is ready to start Day 1 in today’s NFL. Peyton Manning threw 30 INTs his first year. John Elway looked like dogmeat his rookie year (check the stats). But Garoppolo is not a one-year rental. He’s young enough that, in the right situation with the right coach, he can get the finishing touches he needs to become a Super Bowl QB

  2. Many would say that, despite Garoppolo’s inability to get the 49ers over the top, he is.
    ————————————-

Geez – he got the 49ers to the SB, but THE TEAM lost. I guess we should just discard him and treat him with scorn? Everyone who thinks Jimmy G. isn’t a good QB are delusional. An offense is more than just the QB.

  3. The 49er’s aren’t obligated to trade Jimmy G. Why should they? If they want to go with Lance do it but at least you have a solid back up to keep your playoff chances alive. Trade Jimmy and Lance sucks, you look like an idiot. 49ers have a solid team. Why blow another shot with an unproven QB. I don’t get it.

  4. The Jets
    The Titans
    The WFT
    The Giants
    The Ravens

He would be an upgrade on all of these teams as well as the ones you mention

  5. Jimmy G is better than all of the quarterbacks listed in the article. The only real issue is the same as it has been for along time….can Jimmy stay healthy?

  6. No one is paying Jimmy G 25mil this year unless the 49ers determine Lance is a bust. He’ll either take a paycut with the 49ers to back-up Lance or sign somewhere else for less and compete to start.

  7. Why does Jimmy have to take a pay cut? He could just show up in SF and they’d have to pay him, or if they trade him he’ll still get 25 mil (niners would likely eat some of the salary). But he doesn’t HAVE to take a pay cut. Don’t know why he would. Hit FA next season and choose where to go next.

  8. Wouldn’t that be something if the Panthers all along wanted Jimmy, traded for him too and passed off Baker for draft picks later on in the year when a QB goes down. Panthers might as well grab him to.

  9. ‘Is Garoppolo a better option than Jameis Winston?’

You are being facetious RIGHT?… To answer your question: by leaps and bounds!
    Garoppolo above average, Winston overrated…

Saints would be Jimmy G best chance for playoffs and the Saints best hope…
Lions would be the only other team…

  10. No one is trading for Jimmy G at $25 million. It’s all about supply and demand.

  11. SF is not trading him to Seattle. The reason SF refuses to release him is because they know Seattle is the most QB-needy team right now.

  12. The Browns should absolutely make this move if they can work out the financial side and they actually want to win this year. Jimmy G can get you to a conference championship and a Super Bowl because he’s actually done it already.

  13. Why not be more simple with the analysis. At his current salary there are no teams that should be considering acquiring him.

  14. Garoppolo is the best QB on the 49ers roster by far. They would be foolish to trade him away unless they’re trying to tank for a high draft pick!

  15. The Steelers should trade for him now with a low offer. Letting their rookie QB sit for a year behind someone who treated Trey Lance well for a year would be great for the team. AND Jimmy is good, and made many clutch plays for the Niners to make to two NFC Championship games and a SB in just 3 years.

It doesn’t really make sense for a rebuilding team to invest in a QB like Jimmy G. But for any team with a good roster and a less than solid QB it makes perfect sense. Steelers, Browns, …?

  16. The Vikings will need a bridge between Cousins and a rookie after another underwhelming season.

Justin Herbert 31 TDs/10 INTs,5 rushing TDs, 4,300 passing yards as a rookie…Joe Burrow was doing pretty well until he got hurt.

  18. None at $25 million or so a year and a potential bad shoulder, this is what gets GM’s and coaches fired. Either the Niner’s will have to pay a good part of his salary if they want a pick in exchange or cut him to get some space under the cap.

  19. Browns – never gonna happen. They signed a quality backup in Jacoby and are fine with him. Just like Baker was never going to play a down for the Browns, nor will Jimmy. I know the speculation will never end, but the Browns have and always had a plan.

I don’t think the 25 million is guaranteed.

  21. Is Garoppolo better than Geno Smith or Drew Lock? Probably.

No, Jimmy G is an All-Pro if your other options are Smith or Lock. Lock on an NFL roster at this point is a joke. Smith passed that point years ago.

  22. A strong argument can be made that all the teams you mentioned have better QB situations than the 49ers would have without Jimmy Garoppolo.

  23. This whole thing played out so strangely from the way it was supposed to. No telling how this saga ends.

  24. JG would be a fool to go to the Browns. Anyone would be. It’s a one year rental

  25. Jimmy G and Tennessee would look like a great fit. Play action would be right up his ally.

  26. Why all the hate for Jimmy G? “He didn’t get the Niners over the top.” Watson won FOUR GAMES and got $250 million.

  27. Why on earth are the Steelers mentioned here? They don’t have to start Pickett but they already paid Trubisky just in case, but first round picks need to be on the field ideally, especially mid 20’s five year college starters. That’s why he was taken instead of someone like Willis who should sit for a year or two. If both these guys bomb, I think the team is bad, and not just the QB.

  28. Jimmy Gs not Going to play for anyone for less than 20 Million. I see ESPN or Amazon in the near future

Roethlisberger went 13-0. RG3 was a borderline top 10 QB in his rookie season before his knee blew.

Wilson should have taken the Seahawks to the NFC Championship has it not been for a late collapse.

The NFL of today isn’t like the 80s or 90s where sitting for years makes sense.

The reason why a rookie qb hasn’t won a superbowl is by and large there haven’t been many legit chances. Most top level qbs are in a rebuilding mode.

  30. 37-16 as a starting QB incl playoffs. Are you what you’re record says you are? Cousins haters use that argument.

    Mac Jones says hello.

  32. “Many” would say he’s better than Trubisky? I guess “many” means anyone who has ever watched football? Sure, nomads in Mongolia who don’t get the NFL in their yurts might say Trubisky is better I suppose, but let’s be real….no comparison between the 2

  33. Anyone who thinks JG is better than Trubisky is wrong. JG is backup level at best. Teams like Philly with Hurts or Miami with Tua or any team with a QB who has been given chances to prove themselves but just seem to not get over the hump, maybe but JG is not a good QB.

  34. Out of this whole list. Only Miami, Falcons and Browns really make sense. Every QB you mentioned is better than JG. Winston is way better and Mills will end up being a top 10 guy one day. People need to put a little more respect his way. He was the best long term QB in that draft.

Would that be one of the many plans that have made them the laughing stock of the NFL? Or one of them that made them so bad that they have their own slogan for being bad (Browns doing Browns things).?

    ________________________________________________________________________________________

No, Teams are what their record says they are. Not players. Ex… Brad Johnson is a SB winning QB. Trent Dilfer is a SB winning QB… Enough said.

  37. Maybe its better to wait for someone to get hurt on a contender. He is already on a contender with a QB coming off injury who has a risky style of play. Until someone else gets hurt, it seems like he is in a good place already. Other than that, the Packers starting QB seems to be a head case and keeps losing big games, so they could take a look.

  38. Real question – if he gets traded somewhere, who do the 49ers spend $25mil on (or, whatever is left over if they have to include a few $mil in the trade?)
