Jimmy Garoppolo to Tampa? “Not a chance”

As the football-following world tries to figure out where 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will land, a bizarre theory has emerged in recent days.

Garoppolo to Tampa, as the heir apparent to Tom Brady. Basically, New England 2014-17 all over again.

Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, who know the Bucs as well as anyone, reacted to this slow-time chatter by saying, “Not a chance.” Stroud quoted an unnamed Buccaneers coach this this observation: “If [Garoppolo] could throw a deep ball, he would’ve won two Super Bowls already.”

Garoppolo definitely would have won one. He had receiver Emmanuel Sanders wide open for the win in Super Bowl LIV against the Chiefs. (Assuming Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t have answered with a touchdown of his own.) Before it even got to that point, Garoppolo’s failure to properly run the short passing game kept the team from keeping possession and slamming the door on the Chiefs’ comeback from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

Beyond that, it makes no sense for the Bucs to get Garoppolo now — unless he’d arrive with a long-term contract that specifically makes him the heir to Tom Brady as of 2023. Why would Garoppolo surrender the chance to start elsewhere this year, and then to become a free agent in March? He’d definitely get more money that way.

To make it happen, he needs to go to a team that will put him on the field in 2022. We’ve listed the full universe of possibilities. The Buccaneers were not one of them. It would be a fallback position at best for Garoppolo, a concession that he’s got no real opportunity to start elsewhere in 2022. It would make more sense to wait for 2023, if he’s going to land in Tampa.

Also, the coaching staff would have to decide that it has no qualms about adding a quarterback who lacks deep-ball accuracy.

  1. Nah, Tampa has Trask already waiting and they have to test it before moving away from him.

  2. Wow! That’s a Bruce Arians quote. Guy has no filter. I can hear his voice when I read that.

  3. Nobody, and i mean nobody thinks Jimmy G is going to tampa… there are 29 other teams that make more sense

  4. I don’t understand why the 49ers insist on moving on.

Play this season out. If he wins 11 games and takes you on a deep playoff run keep him for 3 years on another team friendly deal.

Let’s say Trey Lance is a mediocre QB his first two seasons. Not only will you have a worse record, but 21st century NFL demands you pay him at least $35-$40M a year on his next contract. That makes it more difficult to field a competitive team.

  5. If you all really think it’s Jimmy’s fault the 49ers won 0 championships with him, you’re still learning football. Good teams don’t win or lose on 1 bad deep ball. Being up 10 with the football in the 4th and losing means the defense got Mahomes’d not Garropoled.

  6. Most 49ers fans want an upgrade at the position but think Jimmy is a decent QB at a lower cap #.

The Yankees are not playing Joey Gallo because he sucks and they’ll take anything for him. Definitely not the same as Garrapolo situation.

  7. Teams that want Jimmy G. won’t trade for him. They know the 49ers have to cut him.
They’ll wait. The fact is this. If Lance is the second coming of Steve Young, the 49ers would have cut Jimmy G. months ago.

  8. He belongs with the other 3rd stringer roster on the Raiders.

  9. I want to see what Trey Lance has. Let him play and keep Jimmy G around if he stinks.

  10. In other earth shattering news slash insight, if I had a billion dollars I’d be a billionaire

  11. “Being up 10 in the 4th and losing”

    Don’t forget Stafford’d. I know you won’t!

  12. I like Jimmy and I think the 49ers will keep him as Lance insurance until some team finds itself in need of a QB during the 2022 season. The rumor that he’s going to go to the Bucs just shows we’re in the silly season football-wise.

  13. Tyrod Taylor straight up for Jimmy Garrapolo on a new contract. 49ers are in because that makes Lance unchallenged but Taylor is better than Nate Soap-N-Sudfeld.

  14. In Garoppolo’s 2 healthy seasons he had a QB rating around 100 and they went to the NFCCG or the SB. The Cowboys and DC Name Changers have not done either this century. He’d be an upgrade on lots of teams. If Jimmy G keeps his current pace for his next 82 attempts he will qualify ad the 5th highest rated passer in NFL history. If the next 82 all hit the turf he’d still be 16th between Warner and Big Ben. The hate directed towards him is weak.

Even if they could go back in time and have Steve Young himself in his prime on the roster…… they still couldn’t have cut Jimmy. His shoulder injury and delayed surgery make this nothing at all to do with Lance. It makes it 100% about the $27.2M they would have been fully on the hook for. Jimmy took a calculated risk delaying surgery in order to force their hand and in doing so may have won. The only downside for him is most starting jobs dried up so choosing his own destination may have also backfired.

  16. I have held from very early on in the offseason that a TRADE swapping Brady for JG could be possible. Whether draft picks would be in the mix is a who knows. Both are FAs next year. Brady isn’t seeing a ring in Tampa at this point, and the Bucs aren’t the hungry team they were when he arrived. Brady would certainly like his chances of a ring in SF and the Bucs might like the prospect of JG as their guy. Despite his injury history and less than stellar playoff performance, he may still be considered to have upside. I just don’t see this happening with JG as Brady’s backup. That makes little sense for anybody involved.

  17. “Assuming Patrick Mahomes wouldn’t have answered with a touchdown of his own.”

There was over a min left in the game. People love to act as if it was the winner ignoring that kc had done a 25 second drive vs ne to tie the previous season.

Not to mention the hindsight of the 13 second game trying drive vs bill this season. The chiefs started clicking and when they do that they are unstoppable.

Going to make this easy for you. You are wrong. One thing that everyone should do is no listen to anyone who acts like only they understand football and everyone is “still learning”. It’s like listening to someone without kids telling you how to raise your own.

  19. “Being up 10 with the football in the 4th and losing means the defense got Mahomes’d not Garropoled.” ….to turn around a 10 point difference means Jimmy G had a chance to his team on top and failed. Yes, the D also failed to prevent the other team from scoring. But, you cannot ignore Jimmy’s part.

  20. Gonna be absolutely hilarious to see the fan club’s reaction when Tommy and his team miss the playoffs this year lolol

And very profitable. Call your bookie and get your bets in folks before it’s too late!
