Report: Dolphins, Mike Gesicki haven’t “really engaged” in contract talks

The deadline for players with franchise tags to sign long-term deals with their current teams comes on July 15 and it doesn’t look like there’s much movement toward an agreement for Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that Gesicki and the Dolphins have “not really engaged in contract negotiations” since Gesicki was tagged early in the offseason. Gesicki is set to make $10.9 million under the terms of the tag.

Two other tight ends were tagged this year. David Njoku and the Browns reached agreement on a four-year deal worth over $54 million, but Dalton Schultz is in the same boat as Gesicki heading into the final week of negotiations.

Gesicki has signed the tag, so he will likely be at training camp even if a late push doesn’t result in a new contract. In addition to Gesicki and Schultz, Bengals safety Jessie Bates and Chiefs tackle Orlando Brown are also currently set to play out the year under the tag.

  1. He should have a monster year, in the TD column, with Waddle and Hill drawing so much safety attention.

I suspect Miami loses him next year to FA, which works better for us as we’ll get a comp pick, which we wouldn’t have this year.

Miami’s 2023 off season will be about the draft (extra 1st and 3rd), don’t have the cap space to spend next year. Just extend (Christian Wilkins).

Dolphins spent a third rounder last year on TE Hunter Long. He should push for a lot of “true” TE reps as Gesicki is essentially a tall slot WR anyway.

This offense is going to be a handful for EVERYONE, even Buffalo.. Especially with Tre’Davious White coming off the ACL injury.

On paper, the only secondary that can hang with Miami’s WR’s is the Dolphins own set of DBs. Thumbs down me all you want if you don’t have Xavien Howard, Jevon Holland and Byron Jones on your team your going to pull your hair on Sundays, if you play this team.

  2. With a rookie head coach and so much change coming to that team, even possibly at qb with another botched top 10 pick, they may be hitting the reset button next year anyway.

  3. He has to show better in-line blocking with this coaching staff.

Losing him for a comp pick would be silly if he shows improvement across the board. Hunter Long? A guy who struggled for any snaps last year, despite Smythe being a terrible route runner and suspect hands? Yeah, not buying that.

Gesiki like Tua is on a 1 yr audition for Miami.

Dolphins just won’t have the money to force an extension.

Plus they should be strong players for the ND TE Michael Mayer, having the extra 1st and 3rd.

  5. Dolphins can’t afford him. They are paying Tyreek too much to catch screen passes and be the team spokesman.

  6. Dallas should offer a 3rd or 2nd rd pick for him and let Schultz walk after the year. I believe Gesiki is better and you’d have a great tight end tandom for a year.

  7. I really wouldn’t focus too much on the blocking aspect. In today’s NFL, TEs are paid to catch passes and create space in the middle. Blocking is a bonus

  8. As already reported, Miami is fiscally (cap) sound for the next 3 years.

And if its a foregone conclusion you are going to move on from Gesiki, you trade him, not tage him and hope for a 3rd round comp pick.

I bet Buffalo would give a 2nd in a heartbeat for him right now. Put him and Knox side by side and someone is running free.

………..This is absurd. A good deal of the reason new england, tampa, and tom are so great is because they had an all pro tackle blocking for them at tight end who also happened to put up 1000 yds and 8 td a year in down years.

  10. Even with his suspect blocking I don’t see the Fins moving on from him. He’s a weapon in the middle with a HUGE catch radius. This new Fins offense will find a way to utilize him before he walks.
