Lamar Jackson, Bernard Pollard have an extended Twitter battle

Nothing helps fill the slow time better than a good, old-fashioned Twitter beef. Especially when it doesn’t involve me.

On Wednesday night, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and former Ravens safety Bernard Pollard got into an extended back and forth on social media, sparked by Pollard chiming in on the ESPN-generated talking point of the week.

Is Lamar Jackson a top-1o quarterback?

We won’t try to parse through the various punches and counter-punches that were thrown, primarily because there were too damn many of them. It just kept going, with Pollard questioning Jackson’s skills as a passer and Jackson questioning Pollard’s skills as a player.

Lamar comes off as being a little too sensitive to the criticism from Pollard. If, as Jackson seems to believe, Pollard wasn’t much of a defensive back, why would Jackson react so strongly, so persistently, to the things Pollard said? It would have been better for Jackson to ignore it or, at a minimum, to make a comment or two and just let it go.

He didn’t. Check his feed. Check Pollard’s. Again, there’s simply too much to fully digest.

It actually started on Tuesday, when former NFL safety and current ESPN analyst Ryan Clark argued that Jackson should be among the list of top-10 quarterbacks, as complied by an ESPN survey of unnamed executives. Pollard said this of Jackson: “He’s def a Top 10 talent, but as far a Top 10 QB I don’t see it. I believe he should get paid by the #Ravens and should get TOP dollar!”

That one didn’t spark a response from Jackson. This comment, posted on Wednesday night by Pollard, did: “No TOP Wr will ever come there while LJ is there. Plenty of WRs have been available to get in the off-season while LJ has been starting, but nobody wants to go. They give him the respect, but they don’t want to play with him. LJ is good but he’s not able to make the throws.”

Jackson told Pollard: “You sound dumb asf.” Replied Pollard: “We’ll wait and see if one signs.”

Making Pollard’s point even more delicate is the fact that receiver Hollywood Brown wanted to be traded out of Baltimore. Jackson, who according to Brown knew about his discontent, responded with surprise and frustration to draft-night news that the team had traded Brown to Arizona. Although former Ravens quarterback Robert Griffin III later claimed that Brown wanted out because of the offense and not the quarterback, the fact remains that, in Baltimore, Jackson is the offense.

And Jackson just wouldn’t let it go. He attacked Pollard for being largely unknown. (Tom Bray definitely knows who Pollard is.) He attacked Pollard for a missed tackle in Super Bowl XLVII. He attacked Pollard for a locker-room dance capped by a split, saying “I only thought cheerleaders did the splits not players too.”

Jackson is undoubtedly a great player. He was the MVP in 2019. He deserves a massive second contract. But this stuff just seems beneath him. Frankly, he has developed a recent streak of sensitivity to criticism that rivals the one exhibited for years by the guy who has won the MVP award in each of the two years since Jackson did.

  1. Any player getting paid what amounts to well over a million bucks a game seems pretty good money to me but maybe it’s not enough. Then again someone making 10 million plus to announce games once a week for 17 weeks seems a lot to me as well. Luckily few people have such problems to worry about.

  2. Just confirms how Jackson lacks leadership. He might be a top 10 QB but he does not have a top 10 arm. It is a passing league, and you can only go so far running the ball like it’s the Jim Brown era.

  3. He is a great talent but as a passer he is well below average. His MVP award was a team award and almost seems meaningless after his playoff performances. Once you pay him big you won’t be able to surround him with as much talent. This isn’t Mahomes or Rodgers, wouldn’t pay him like it. This garbage also makes me think how good can he negotiate his own deal.

  4. Lamar never been hit by a player like pollard . He’s lucky 38 isn’t still playing on Sundays

  5. Lamar Jackson has imposter syndrome.
He knows that he isn’t seeing the field or making the throws and once the run is taken away from him…he has struggled to make teams pay.
Pollard is a cheap shot artist.
As a Patriots fan, I honestly hope the Ravens give Lamar 45 million a year for 5 years guaranteed, because that removes one of their rivals.
That being said, I dont think the Ravens are offering that, because if they were; Lamar would have signed it.

  6. Great athlete? Yes! Great QB? No. Vick 2.0….could make plays and had a cannon for an arm, but never was able to read defenses.

  7. Lamar’s game is hard to quantify and gauge against other NFL QBs. If you go by regular QB measurables, I wouldn’t put Lamar in NFL’s top 15 QBs, let alone 10 and he’s my guy. Like Pollard said, top 10 talent, not passer. Lamar’s play fit’s the Ravens’ style of football and the offense is tailored around him. I don’t care if Lamar passes for 50 yards in a game as long as we win and he has shown he can get that done, over and over. Lamar gets his unfair share of criticism because people in this country don’t like what is different. He threw an amazing pass with only a few seconds left to set up the GW FG in Detroit, but people only talked about one thing. Lamar had 4 fourth quarter comebacks in a shortened season. How many more could that have been if Harbaugh doesn’t turn into Staley late in games? Lamar needs to accept and shrug off the QB listing. He didn’t hand back the MVP trophy when people voted unanimously for him, did he? This twitter battle is totally ridiculous and Lamar needs to show better maturity and worry about getting better and winning, not some QB ranking. I’m sure all top-tier receivers are not in favor of going to Baltimore. You have a QB who runs in a TE focused offense with not as many passing yards game to game. Having said all that, I wouldn’t trade Lamar for any QB in the league. He is an exciting player who can definitely get the Ravens’ to their 3rd world championship.

  8. Like it or not, everything Pollard said was factual. He is a top-10 TALENT not a top-10 QUARTERBACK.. He’s not there yet and the truth hurts

  9. Why does he deserve a massive contract tho? His play has been decreasing yearly.

  10. LJ “immersed in football”. He hasn’t been able to negotiate a new contract because he’s too busy with this stuff.

  11. Cmon Lamar. Pollard’s right. Work on your mechanics and the stuff between the ears.

Your name translates to “The Sea” but you couldn’t hit water if you fell out of a boat.

  12. Nice ref to he who has won the last two MVPs but shall not be named. GB fan, but it brightened my AM.

  13. Pollard never got over getting released by the Ravens. Usually he attacks Harbaugh but he’s gone after anyone in purple over the years. When you look at it in totality Pollard seems completely obsessed with the Ravens organization.

  14. To be a truly great quarterback you have to have the complete set of tools in your tool box. One of the top tools required is a great arm which we all know Lamar doesn’t possess, and the second most important tool is a certain degree of intellect. Lamar has shown repeatedly that he’s lacking in that department. When you respond to criticism like Lamar did you not only give the criticism some validity, but you make yourself look soft especially when you haven’t done anything yet. If I were the Ravens I’d think long and hard about signing this kid to a long term mega deal.

  15. That’s probably some behind-the-scenes stuff we’re not privy to because as the so called Patriot killer in the Raven organization, I’m sure those two have crossed paths. Sometimes it’s as simple as that, and Jackson is from South Florida where the athletes go back and forth like that. I wouldn’t read much into it. I also take issue with comparing it to Rodgers. Rodgers gets annoyed at the media. I’ve never seen Jackson do that. This is another older athlete questioning him.

  16. I for 1 agree with Pollard. Jackson is certainly a great athlete. I agree he cannot make the throws. Heres to the Ravens giving him $50 / mill / season.

  17. Yet another player trying to make themselves relevant on social media because time has passed them by. If Pollard hadn’t taken out Brady’s knee none of us would know his name.

  18. Jackson is an effective QB, one who adds value.
Teams are paying worse QBs a lot.
But is he worth more than Watsons contract?

The only reason to overpay him is it’s hard finding even average QBs

  19. He is not a top 10 qb. He also does not deseeve a top deal unless Baltimore is crazy.

But arrogant Baltimore did this to themselves. They should have quietly dealt him to some dumb team for picks after 2020 while his stock was high. He’s maxed out the playbook. The gimmick is up.

They’ve beem drafting poorly for years and the media gives them a pass constantly. They misssed the playoffs 3 years in a row and now are in a fade with an unhappy qb they can’t trade.

    This is glorious.

  20. I would be very hesitant to giving Lamar a massive deal. Outside of his MVP season, his passing numbers are very pedestrian.

  21. Never cared for Pollard as a player but he isn’t wrong. Why would a wide receiver want to go there? Blame the offensive scheme all you want but his QB rating last season was 50.

  22. Just sign an extension, Jackson. The rest of the AFC north begs you to. Take your money and GTFO off social media.

I thought your agent would be knee deep in negotiations… oh wait…

  23. This is a good way for Pollard to get his walking papers. Even though he is right in his statements.

From where? He’s already out of the league.

Walking papers? Pollard has been out of the NFL for several seasons now.

  26. Lamar should sign whatever decent contract he is offered, his backup is every bit as good as he is. . . perhaps better.

  27. Fortunately for Jackson, he doesn’t play for the Patriots so he’ll be fine. New England should have had 3 more titles if it wasn’t for his dirty hits on Brady, Gronkowski and Welker.

  28. Another distraction that is taking away from Jackson’s focus. He seems more worried about defending his skills as a player in social media than actually finding a way to take back the AFC North and make a deep run in the post season.

Lmao. Thanks for the early laugh. These two teams may not even be top 10 in the conference.

  30. I would say his record speaks on his talent, he is a generational talent…but no one is lying when they’re saying mobile qbs can’t finish out the season to get that trophy. If he wants to prove his point, he should do it on the field instead of the newfound tantrums off it.

  31. As I surmised. I did a little looking around and see that Pollard has had a beef with Harbaugh in particualr since playing there, and he’s always criticized Jackson. Basically one of those people who can’t admit he was wrong about him coming out of college. Nothing to see here. Jackson just finally shot back at him.

  32. Why should Jackson bite his tongue. BP made it personal. I used to like BP but he’s been running his mouth since he retired, and not in a positive way. Jackson is totally right to put Pollard in his place.

  33. People either cannot, or refuse to, understand that Lamar marches to the beat of his own drummer. Everyone crushes Lamar for not having an agent, however, that is his business alone. Lamar not having an agent has zero effect on his haters.

Lamar’s haters also claim that he cannot throw, yet he has a 64.1 career completion percentage with 84 Tds compared to 31 INTs.

Lamar is a friendly, happy go lucky guy who contributes to the community and has never had a speck of trouble. He’s a much better person than his haters ever will be.

  34. Fortunately for Jackson, he doesn’t play for the Patriots so he’ll be fine. New England should have had 3 more titles if it wasn’t for his dirty hits on Brady, Gronkowski and Welker.

——————————————————————————————–New England is notorious for playing dirty. Gronk was a dirty player, tried to give Tre White a concussion by diving on him head first. And Edelman was dirty, every punt return he attempted, he would try to launch head first into the opposite team.

  35. My source within the ravens told me that Hollywood wanted out because him and Lamar had a falling out as friends. Hollywood had 149 targets last year and over 1000 yards. He would have had more but after Lamar got hurt Huntley only targeted him 10 times once in the 6 games he started.

  36. Social media beefs are fun for all of us to follow but, when a QB gets into one it’s very telling. QBs are supposed to have ice water in their veins. Never show any fear or respond to critics and to be a leader.L.J is a top 10 talent and if he shut up and studied defenses he could be a top ten QB too. Vick was like that but when he came back he studied Ds more and became a better QB. Take that advice Lamar. Be a leader and always try to be better and stay off Twitter

    But is Joe Flacco elite?

    ====

Don’t know, but in his first four seasons, Flacco started 9 playoff games and won 5 of them.

Conversely, in his first four seasons, Jackson has started 4 playoff games and won 1 of them.

In Flacco’s 5th year, he won the Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP.

And Jackson’s getting into Twitter flame wars with ex-players.

  38. Lamar has subtly declined post 2019. During 2020, Lamar had 3,762 combined passing and rushing yards. 2021 was an improved production with 3,649 combined passing and rushing yards on less games. Passing TDs also decreased by 10 each of the past two years. However, the most important factor during the two years: lamar was knocked out of the playoff game vs buffalo with an injury and missed 5 games last year with an ankle injury. Nobody would stick for Allen if his last two years were exactly like Lamar’s.

  39. As a Bengals fan thank god for Joe Burrow.. This is the guy you are giving the keys to your franchise Baltimore. Forget about the arm, how about lack of maturity?
