Top of Patriots’ 2019 draft class collapses

The year 2019 started as a good one for the Patriots, with their sixth Super Bowl championship. It went downhill from there, culminating in a one-and-done playoff appearance and Tom Brady‘s exit after 20 seasons.

Along the way, the Patriots had a draft to forget.

Mike Reiss of ESPN.com looks at the team’s collection of selections in the aftermath of the trade that sent receiver N'Keal Harry to the Bears for a measly seventh-round pick in 2024.

The Patriots already have moved on from two of their two three picks in 2019, with third-round linebacker Chase Winovich previously traded to the Browns. Reiss also notes that second-round defensive back Joejuan Williams will be a long shot to make the team in 2022.

Even with Williams still on the roster, the Patriots (per Reiss) are just one of four teams to no longer have two of their top three picks from 2019 on the team. The others are the Broncos, Panthers, and Ravens. And the Broncos are only on that list because they sent two of those two three picks (tight end Noah Fant and quarterback Drew Lock) to the Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade.

Reiss also explores the potential reasons for the struggles, from giving too much credit to personal connections with coaches to giving too much credence to pre-draft interview. And while it also would be easy to pin blame for the bad draft on former V.P. of player personnel Nick Caserio (now the Texans’ G.M.), Belichick has run the show since the moment he arrived in 2000.

Reiss also notes that trading down from No. 64 and No. 73 and landing at No. 77 kept them from getting potentially ideal prospect Terry McLaurin at No. 76. Of course, the Patriots would have had McLaurin or DK Metcalf or A.J. Brown or Deebo Samuel with the 32nd over pick, which became N’Keal Harry. But are we sure those players would have have become the players they are in New England?

It’s easy to blame the issues on a failure to draft the right player. It’s fair to wonder whether there’s an issue with developing the players they have. Is coach Bill Belichick sufficiently patient with young receivers who aren’t making the immediate transition to the NFL? Does he tend to run wet-behind-the-ears wideouts off the field if they, for example, fail to line up in the right spot or otherwise display appropriate mastery of the offense?

Then again, receiver Jakobi Meyers was undrafted in 2019. So it’s not impossible for certain guys to figure it out. But undrafted guys have nowhere to go but up. For the receivers taken high in the draft by the Patriots under Belichick, they’ve had nowhere to go but down. And most of them have.

  1. 2019 was a draft to forget and the only decent talent drafted was traded to the Browns it ended the Pats run of dominance in the AFC with how bad the Harry pick was especially.

  2. Then again, receiver Jakobi Meyers was undrafted in 2019.

GM Bill was always terrific at finding those diamonds in the rough. For whatever reason not as great at the top of the draft lately although 2021 had a great start. 2022 was a Strange one (see what I did there?) but time will tell.

Pats just better hope Harry doesn’t turn into a star with Fields. Draft misses happen but that would be a real mis-read of your talent.

  3. Oh great, here we go yet again…. Probably over a hundred posts about BB the coach & BB the GM & of course Brady this & Brady that followed by Mac this & Mac that……gotta love the off season!!!

  4. It can be said that Jakobi developed despite of his head coach’s stubbornness & inability to develop players. It says a lot about the Pat’s evaluation ability as well, because he was undrafted.

The Belichick mystic is a fraud.

  5. The fact is Tom Brady is just a nice little system QB with a little arm who was caught cheating.

The fact club doesn’t want to hear it but Tommy will never AND I MEAN NEVER be loved admired and respected like Peyton Manning and Joe Montana are as greats of the game. No matter what they say. No matter how much they wish it were so. It ain’t happening. 😢

We don’t like weak arm QBs who have to cheat to be good.

  7. If you looked closely, you’d find several top NFL executives who had less than stellar records with their top draft choices, but were able to hit on mid-rounds, esp. Round 3. This goes all the way back to Lombardi, who blew a lot of high picks, but compensated by stockpiling more than one pick in Rounds 1 & 2 in several drafts.

  8. Bill Belichick would never have a GM having a say over him in personnel, that’s the problem. Bill thinks he is the chosen one.

In his 8 seasons as a HC without a guy named Brady behind center, BB has zero SB appearances. Now choose any 8 year span with Brady behind center.

  11. How can this be happening. Judging from what TB6 says BB is the master drafter…..Brady made B B look better than he is and the fan boys are in denial….lol.

  12. Nobody is kicking HOF coaches out of Canton because they did all their winning with first ballot HOF QB’s. Bill Belichick has nothing to apologize for, either. Go down the list of great NFL coaches and you’ll see most had a great QB. But none of them won six super bowls with those great QB’s. It’s much more difficult to stay on top than it is to get to the top. N’Keal Harry should have never been drafted. But that doesn’t mean Belichick was just a bad coach/GM that had all his screw-ups covered up by Brady. I don’t know that Belichick would have won any super bowls if he didn’t have Tom Brady, but I also don’t know if he would have won 10 super bowls if he had Joe Montana. We’ll just never know, and we don’t need to know. The guy has six rings, plus a couple from the Giants. There are plenty of NFL people to criticize, but Belichick is not on that list.

  13. Mac Jones is already ahead of Brady after their rookie season.

    ++++++++++++

Brady’s 2001 team, from defense to offense, were far worse that the team Jones had, and Brady delivered 3 comeback wins.

Let us see if Jones will ever be able to step up when Pats need him.

  14. I heard it’s easy to look like a genius when you film the other teams practice

  15. Brady made Belichick. He hasn’t had a good draft since the early 2000’s.

  16. Pats coaches and employees know that Casiero found most of the Patriot playoff talent. Thats why Bill fought his departure(Despite taking the credit). Now that Nick is gone, so are those diamonds in the rough you mentioned. Bill’s ego is a major weakness.

  17. 2001 Pats had Richard Seymour, Vrabel, Bruschi, RPhifer, TLaw, LMilloy, Matt Light, DWoody, TBrown, Vinitieri, etc. Very few current Pats could start on that team. They would have destroyed the current team, especially with their D.

    He’s a fraud.

You mean the defense that collapsed against Jake Delhomme, and needed offense to score 24 or more in back to back playoff games?

FYI, they played a lot of lousy offenses in 2003 and 2004 seasons, besides Jets, Bills and dolphins scored total 76 points in six games against Patriots.

Comments like this show exactly how clueless Belichick believers are.

    ————————————

First of all, Brady wasn’t a rookie in 2001. He was on the bench in his rookie season. Therefore, Jones is already ahead of Brady.

Second, the 2001 team had two future HOFers on defense in Seymour and Law as well as Bruschi and McGinest. The 2021 team was way worse.

  24. Carolina was down 21-10 until into the 4th quarter, which is when both safeties(Harrison and EWilson) and a CB got hurt. The Pats had no adequate depth there. ASamuel was a rookie. Then things got a little crazy. Injuries were the reason The Pats had the #1 and #2 D in the NFL in 2003 and 2004. They got to and won the 1rst 3 SBowls with BB’s D. Facts. Not blind hatred of Belichick.

  25. Maverick,

Did Jones step up when Pats needed him? Do you know from which drives in SB 42 Brady got most of his 145 yards?

Ahead of Brady, you mean when defense completely dominated opponents? When in such situations, Belichick simply didn’t give Brady the balls.

  26. They won the 1st 3 SB with BB’dD

    ++++++++

How did they get first round bye? Thanks to Brady.

How did they score 24 or more in back to back playoff games? Thanks to Brady.

With so much invested in defense, (and almost nothing on offense) the game plans by Belichick were pathetic.

How would Pats be like without Brady? You already saw it in last two seasons.

  27. Brady was a glorified game manager in his early years. 145 yards? That’s a joke. The Pats scored 13 points on offense in that game. Luckily Belichick’s D came up with 4 turnovers and 7 points of their own to hold the Rams record setting offense to 17 points

  28. “Mac Jones is already ahead of Brady after their rookie season.”

    ++++++++++++

“Brady’s 2001 team, from defense to offense, were far worse that the team Jones had, and Brady delivered 3 comeback wins.”

Unfortunately for your point, Brady’s rookie season was 2000, where he threw only 4 passes. 2001 was Bradys second NFL season.

  29. The Pats got the bye after going 14-2 because the Pats had the best D in the league. in 2003/4 the D held the Colts to 14 and 3 points in the playoffs. What did Brady have to do with getting the bye? The Pats could have won their 1rst 3 SBowls with a decent QB. How did the Pats invest more on D? There were 1rst and 2nd round picks all over the offense. Branch, Graham, Light, Dillon, etc.

  30. BB has been so good at at developing talent at so many positions – but he’s been absolutely atrocious at identifying and developing young high round WR draft picks. The last high round receiver I remember NOT being a bust in NE was Deion Branch.

  31. 145 yard? That is a joke.

    ++++++++++++

Find 4 most critical drives by Patriots in that SB. Then add up all the yards and 1st down Brady got in those 4 drives.

Has less clue than a 3rd grade.

Not even 100 yards passing until the last 90 seconds. 😂

The most hilariously wrong Super Bowl mvp of all time by far. Take away Brady and play Bledsoe they still win. Take away Law or Willie Mac and they get blown right out of New Orleans.

  34. Tommy was outplayed by Jake Delhomme in Super Bowl 38 😂

    Really Tommy? Jake Delhomme??? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

  35. Brady had 5, FIVE comeback in 2003, and #4 offense in 2004.

When Pats we’re favorite against Steelers, it was because of offense, not defens.

Every good defense shut down Peyton ten, so stop bragging about it.

  36. Sorry Tommy lovers.

GOATs don’t go 1-6 against the Manning brothers and Nick Foles in Super Bowls and conference championship games.

Nothing but a system QB. When the system breaks down so does Tommy. Proven again and again.

  37. Find 4 most critical drives by Patriots in that SB. Then add up all the yards and 1st down Brady got in those 4 drives.

I couldn’t come up with a more meaningless point if I tried. Should I divide by 2 and square the hypotenuse too?

  38. The thing with these draft misses is nobody ever seems to consider the situation between where the guy went and the hypothetical team. For example in 2017, if the Browns draft Mahomes at number one overall and start him from day one on an awful team with mediocre at best coaching does he shine or get ruined by the ineptitude all around him? New England’s offense was notoriously difficult for rookies with McDaniels and Brady there. Maybe that has more to do with young wr’s not developing than most people think.

  39. Lol, passed EVERY of 4 tests your coach asked you to, with that garbage receivers group.

Imagine you have a test FOUR times, while each one you have less than 30% chance.

Brady is nothing without Belichick or an all star team around him.

Proved it with his entire 2019 season without Gronk, when he could only put up a 70 rating against Belichick in the biggest game of his life and shut out by Taysom Hill when his all star team wasn’t available.

He’s just like Alex Smith. That’s where his talent level is at. Smith is awesome with a great team around him too. Remember how he truck stomped Brady not once but twice.

    System QB.

  41. The ones claiming it was all belichick’s D and Brady was a game manager the early years should check out the Twitter account Tom Brady Facts (@TB_Facts).

A lot more to Brady’s game than just game manager. Guy has always been a top qb in the league. He’s always been near the top pf the league in all the stats. Sure he looks like a game manager compared to what he ended up being but he’s always been elite.

  42. I have never encountered anyone e that knows less about FB, YET THINKS HE DOES.

  43. GMG,

I am still waiting for you to show me Brady’s plays by Peyton, Rodgers, Brees and Mahomes. Don’t be a big xxxxth.

    30% x 30% x 30% x 30% = 0.81%, that is less than 1%.

A 3rd grade football fan knows what it means.

  44. And why did Brady smash his cell phone?

Nobody has ever been able to explain that one to me very well. I wonder why? 🤔

  45. Lol, so easy.

There were hundreds of reasons he didn’t wanted others looking at his phone, might be the nude pictures of his wife?

To claim it was evidence is like claiming “every man is my father because my father is a man”.

  46. Brady barely cracked the top 10 in passing stats a couple of times during his 1rst 5 years. Facts.

I’m not anti Brady, I just disagree with people that say it was all BB or all Brady

    ——-
Yes that’s the excuse I keep hearing from Team Tom.

Except if you read the report it was Team Tom that would be conducting the search on the phone not the league looking for key words that the investigation needed. The phone was never leaving Team Tom’s hands even for a second. The chance there would be a leak of that kind of private info was zero.

So now that you are informed about that, why did Tommy smash his cell phone?

  48. Why did the wells report claim they received full cooperation from Brady and his phone? Answer that.

And text messaging is a two way street. Even if Brady ‘smashed’ his phone to hide texts they would be on the employee team phones. They weren’t.

  49. The stats in 2001 doesn’t mean anything, because Belichick didn’t even give him the balls, unless necessary,( not mention that the WR group was so pathetic that Brady didn’t have a reliable target for 15 yards)

Like in 50-10 wins over Jags, Mac Jones threw 3 TD, and the same against browns. But in 2001, in 44-13 wins over colts, Brady threw nothing.

Brady was given the balls only when offense had to produce, like against chargers, like in SB.

  50. Deflategate was a complete NOTHING and a waste of time. Even if Brady did it, which I doubt. At most it was an equipment violation and a 10k fine. The league never cared about air pressure before. They were after the Pats because they won too much and were arrogant. The NFL testified it had no evidence. Brady proved it was nothing by being even better and going on to win more SBowls. The only ones that still care are trolls with an agenda.

  51. Belichick wouldn’t give poor Tommy the balls? I thought it was Brady’s system. Were those the invisible balls that only Pats WRs can see?

  52. Even now, Belichick still doesn’t know what made the system work. ( Because he drafted a running QB)

Do you know how many times Brady threw the balls in 2002 season? 601 times. If not because Troy Brown was absent for 2.5 games, Patriots would have won the division again.

There’s lots of info on a smartphone that can be searched it doesn’t have to be just text messages. Brady KNEW Wells wanted the phone to be searched. He destroyed it anyway. That played a major role in the decision by the league to suspend him so no it was not seen as cooperative. So again the question is – why? What was Tommy hiding?

This is something I want to see more from Jones. He doesn’t have to be a dual threat QB, and he definitely isn’t I think it will help his game to roll out and extend a play. Has good feet in the pocket and can run if he needs to. I think the idea that he is not mobile at all is way overblown.

  60. Even if the NFL actually proved Brady deflated footballs (it’s pretty laughable to suggest they did) …

Even if Brady admitted to actually deflating footballs (it’s pretty sill to suggest it didn’t smell fishy) …

Please educate the masses on any appreciable difference in stats before vs after deflate gate.

No amount of “Brady is a cheater” is going to change the fact that reducing ball pressure amounted to anything statistically significant. Which is why it won’t matter when the “system” QB becomes a first ballot HOFer. I get the cheating angl but we’re way past taking anything away from Brady. It’s funny to see people try though.

Brady made the pro-bowl 3 times in his first 5 years playing. He led the league in TD passes one of those years and yards in another. In two of those years he also came in 3rd in MVP voting. That’s significantly above, barely cracking the top 10.
