Where will Jimmy Garoppolo end up?

USA TODAY Sports

Earlier this month, we cast the widest possible net as to the teams that could or should or may be interested in 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Now that the 49ers have reiterated permission to seek a trade that was given back in March, who will make the move, if no one has yet?

The Browns reportedly are out. There has been no reporting suggesting that anyone is in.

On one hand, teams need to keep their cards close to the vest in order to do the best possible deal for Garoppolo. On the other hand, if you want him, there he is, go and get him.

Who will make the move? I continue to think the Texans are deliberately slow playing the situation and waiting for the right chance to reunite Garoppolo with the man who drafted him in New England in 2014. If not the Texans, who?

No one really stands out. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel has worked extensively with Garoppolo, but Miami seems to be all in with Tua Tagovailoa. Would Garoppolo be better? He’s done more in recent years than Tua has, that’s for sure.

The Falcons would make sense, but they seem to be content to go forward with Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder. The Seahawks reportedly have talked about Garoppolo. But is he really an upgrade in Seattle’s system over Geno Smith or Drew Lock?

The problem is that camps are opening. It won’t be easy for Garoppolo to take charge, like Brett Favre did when he showed up in Minnesota in August 2009 and quickly became the best option. Garoppolo isn’t good enough to show up and take over. And the longer it takes for his status to resolve, the less time he’ll have to win the internal competition for the starting job and to prepare for the external competition against other teams, starting in fewer than two months.

The best play may be to wait for a serious injury to a quarterback elsewhere, even if they rarely happen in August. At some point, Garoppolo will have to decide whether to take a lot less money to remain on the 49ers’ roster — or whether to refuse any reduction, get released, and wait for an opportunity that may not emerge until 2023.

  1. Some decent team’s starter will get hurt, and the Niners will get a mid round pick for renting him for a year. My guess is it will be the Raiders.

  2. Good injury history is probably frustrating for GMs but Atlanta would make a lot of sense for him and the team.

  3. It’s plain to see. Nobody wants Jimmy G! 9ers had tons of options at the end of the season, but got greedy and blew it.

  4. Giants, garropalo puts them in the mix for division championship. Trade Davy to Cleveland and hold the line.

  5. Garropolo does not put the giants in the mix for the nfc east. They had a great draft (assuming thibodeaux is more concerned with football than “building his brand”) theyll be better than last year but they’re still pulling up 3rd in the division even with garropolo.

You’ve just shown your football IQ. Tom Brady himself wouldn’t have survived the last 4 years behind the Giants offensive line. Give Daniel Jones a chance with a decent Oline (and a coaching staff that doesnt threaten him with being benched of he throws a INT) this season and see what he can do. The Giants were winning when he was in the lineup. Silly Giant fans are always ready to give up on a player or call them a bust.

Why? Carr has missed all of two regular season games in eight seasons.

  8. Isn’t it obvious that teams planning to tank don’t want Jimmy G to upend the plan?

  9. 49ers stunk before Jimmy G got there. He immediately made them better. Then he got hurt and they stunk. He came back and took them to the Super Bowl. Then he got hurt and they stunk again. Then he came back and they went to NFC Champ game. Jimmy G is calm in the pocket, quick with his decisions, precise, and with the exception of some notably infamous throws 49ers seem to only remember, accurate. If Jimmy G wasn’t a good QB, the 49ers would have been good without him, but they haven’t been good. They’ve stunk.

  10. Seattle, New O, NYG, Pitt, Chicago, etc. Jimmy would save these franchises cause thier QBS suck. Cant think, who’s Atlanta’s and Houston’s starters?

  11. Seattle would make the most sense, but I seriously doubt the 49ers would trade him in division. Next most would be the Giants, if the coaching staff doesn’t like what they see with their incumbent QB. Atlanta would also sense, if Mariota stinks it up in the preseason. The Dolphins likewise with Tuo. My guess, the Niners put him in bubble wrap in the preseason and wait to see which team GM hits the panic button once they realize their QB room is an albatross around the team’s collective neck.

  12. It will be the Giants either thru a pay cut or with Taylor and Golladay going back.

Jimmy’s won/loss record SHOULD put him in rare territory – but the NFL has shown it means nothing. Why? Everybody and his brother (including his current team, the Niners) had an opportunity at Jimmy – and the NFL world showed what they thought of him by choosing every QB they could find except him. Why? Again, it seems the Tampa coach tells it all who said Jimmy would have won two super bowls if he could throw. Is that the why of it all?

  14. I would just caution Jimmy G. to think hard before refusing less money and getting released. Having some decent money in your pocket beats being unemployed until an injury happens and you become a one year rental on a team that is crap, setting you up for a lousy payday next year too. Besides, SF is going to NEED Jimmy G. because they are handing the car keys over to Lance and he can’t pass his driving test yet. By week 4 they will be wishing they could give the car to Jimmy G.

  15. Is a reunion with Josh McDaniels not an option? He’s an upgrade over the backup QBs currently there.

  16. if i were the 49ers i’d at least keep jimmy G until trey lance has shown he can be the guy. he still hasn’t played enough to do that yet.

  17. But is he really an upgrade in Seattle’s system over Geno Smith or Drew Lock?

Are you for real questioning whether Jimmy G is better than those other bozos?? The man has been to the super bowl. Seattle is run first much like San Francisco

  18. I hope Detroit signs Garoppolo & let him beat out Jared Goff for the starting job.

  19. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jimmy G land in Philly as Jalen Hurts insurance. The Eagles love having multiple options at the helm.

  20. The Seahawks reportedly have talked about Garoppolo. But is he really an upgrade in Seattle’s system over Geno Smith or Drew Lock?
    ___________

    Yes, yes he is.

  21. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jimmy G land in Philly as Jalen Hurts insurance. The Eagles love having multiple options at the helm.

Hurts is terrible, noodle arm, not accurate, can’t read defenses. It would be nice to see my Birds actually run a pro offense instead of the high school offense they have to run because of Hurt’s limitations.

QB and both safety positions are the only holes the Eagles have right now

  22. SF isn’t going to trade a starting-level QB to a team in the division they must see twice a year.

But here’s a scenerio: SF trades JG to Miami, as an example. After the trade, JG is then traded again to Seattle. A three-team deal saves face for SF, and JG ends up in a place where he realistically could start.

He’s a top-tier QB without a home. I think SF is goofy to even think of trading him.

  23. Someone above said it correctly, he will be traded/signed once a team panics after their starter is injured.

  24. True the Eagles love having multiple QB’s. Just none of them are ever any good.

  25. They just have to be patient. Once the season starts and these teams realize what they really have at QB the market will open up, and the pice for Jimmy G will go up.

If it doesn’t then we’ll have a helluva QB room throughout the season,

  26. After watching Geno Smith stumble his way through an NFL career…I would say Jimmy G is easily an upgrade. Even more so over Drew Lock. But, I’d rather make 2022 a re-build year and get a top 10 pick then draft a QB in 2023. Why waste the money on Jimmy G when he won’t be the long term answer and he will likely worsen the 2023 draft position.
