Bill Belichick sees “dramatic improvement” in Mac Jones

USA Today Sports

Patriots players have spent the offseason noting the improvement that they’ve seen in quarterback Mac Jones as he heads into his second season and the team’s head coach weighed in on the subject on Tuesday.

Bill Belichick met with reporters as the team’s full squad reported for training camp and said that he concurs with those who have been singing Jones’ praises over the last few months. Belichick says that he has seen “dramatic improvement” in the 2021 first-round pick since the end of his rookie season.

“Everyone recognizes how well he prepares and how much further along he [is] than a year ago,” Belichick said, via Tom Curran of NBCSportsBoston.com.

The Patriots’ plan to go without an offensive coordinator and use Joe Judge as their quarterbacks coach has led to some head scratching around the league, but both decisions will be afterthoughts if Jones lives up to the advance billing the Belichick and the rest of the organization are giving him leading into the 2022 season.

  1. The confidence campaign continues.
    This year? We’ll see.
I feel sorry for the kid. Even if he’s good, the rest of the team is Swiss cheese.

  2. Miami will sweep them again regardless.

We beat them twice without the reinforcements we added.

Good luck to Belichek trying to stop this offense.

Don’t come sucking up to us later.

  3. He is, and will be at the end of his career, the best quarterback from the 2021 draft.

  4. Mac Jones is a good NFL QB. What he lacks in physical skills he more than makes up in mental skills and preparation. He’s becoming a coach on the field.

  5. When the Patriots begin their ascent back to the top of the AFC East again this year the crying from those Bills fans will be heard on Mars. It’s back to being the bridesmaid like you were for 20 plus years Bills fans. Oh you were so close to being relevant….Wahahahahahahahaha

  6. In other words, the next few weeks will be a lot of fluff articles from the media based on nothing but opinion and speculation by media ‘experts’, coaches, GMs, and players.

  7. I would hope he is better than a year ago at this time since he never played a down of NFL football last July.

Saw an interesting analysis where Jones was excellent last season vs zone where he throws to the seams but really struggles against man. Most QB’s do struggle with a lack of speed at the receiver position and not getting separation.

I really doubt Parker stays healthy all year so the development of Thornton will go a long way to stop the box from being loaded. That will help Jones a lot.

  8. BB’s going to run the entire offense?
Hope he’s better at this than playing GM.
8-9 season at best for the Pats.

  9. Belichick and Brady both had a great run but it’s over for both of them. Tired of the false hype.

  10. So he’s putting pressure on Jones like Tyreek is putting pressure on Tua. Lots of pressure on 3 out of 4 AFC East QB’s

  11. They could have a top 5 offense, maybe top 3, in the conference which will help the defense more.

No one knows where the ball is going and Mac doesn’t play diva favorites nor does he pout or stand in the shotgun 45 times a game with a lead, all predictable to chase stats like Brady from 2007-2012.

When BB works with qbs daily, the results are good. It is just a fact.

  12. People interviewed a Patriot’s running back coach for a head coaching job while McDaniels was OC. Most of the BB tree has not been successful, but that doesn’t mean that owners don’t keep going to the well. Two ex-head coaches on the staff. BB is trying to stop the brain drain by not giving titles.

  13. I don’t know why the Giants didn’t draft him? He’s going to be a similar player to Eli Manning. The Giants could win a Super Bowl with Mac Jones and a healthy Saquon Barkley.

  14. I think Jones is going to have a few more weapons on offense this year.

My concern is the defense, if they don’t improve, they are going nowhere this year IMO.

2nd year jumps are always the biggest for all players… at all levels.

    Yup.

Looking forward to Barmore’s and Stevenson’s too.

I want to see Jones become more than just a front running QB. The book is out on him – take away his favorite throws to the seam and those 8-10 yard out and ups to the flat with tight man defense and he struggles. It’s all on tape and teams will play him that way until he shows he can beat it.

That’s why it’s important for the receivers to step up. Most QB’s who have receivers who can’t get open and separation don’t do well against man. Right now Jones is only as good as they are, he’s not the kind of QB that can elevate receivers. Not yet.

  17. As a rookie, Mac Jones quarterbacked a team that scored the 6th most points in the NFL. This was with two new TEs and two new WRs, plus the preseason loss of his 3rd-down RB.

This year all those players return plus N’Keal Harry swapped for DaVante Parker. (Plus some serious RB depth, a (maybe) gadget slot guy, the fastest WR in this year’s draft).

NEWSFLASH NFL FANS: Bill Belichick has shown when he has the horses — and he has two stables full — his team scores points, gobs of glorious points. Expect: Mac for 5k yards; Mac for 40+ TDs; NE #1 in Points Scored.

    LOL

I mean, you don’t really believe that, do you?

Anyhoo, I think the biggest story this offseason (and most constant) has been the 1st to practice, last to leave Mac hype. We’re close to the season now and the proof, as they say, is in the pudding.

I thought Jones was good last year, but way overrated based on a handful of games. To me, he looked just like the guy scouts thought he would be. If he all of a sudden turns into a top 10 or even 5 QB, I’ll be surprised, but it would be a real tribute to BB if he did.

  19. The diet, the discipline, the attention to strength and preparation … these things are Bradyesque. Jones will only get better and better. The Patriots are set at quarterback for the next 15 years and are likely to win one or more Super Bowls.

  20. When BB works with QB daily, the results are good. It is just fact.

    +++++++

Never saw him working with QB before.

You better pray. If Mac Jone is not as good as last season or better, I don’t know how Belichick believers like you can talk about his greatness anymore with a straight face.

LOL. Take the under. Trust me.

They were adequate last year. They had practice squad guys in that playoff game that should have never seen a snap. JJW is a lost cause but there’s plenty of talent there. Barmore should be even better, looking forward to seeing that. Dugger needs to stay healthy he certainly was not in that playoff game. It’s put up or shut up time for guys like Uche. And Judon also staying healthy matters. Turns out he too was not and that explains his decline in December a lot. Purged older guys like Hightower and KVN. Losing Jackson even as overrated as he is hurts…but when has Bill ever not been able to patch together a serviceable secondary with duct tape and glue?

    ****************************************************************

The finish to the season was bad, yet for the year NE gave up the 2nd fewest points in the NFL.

I am not worried about the defense. BB has moved on from three of last year’s LBs, which he would only do if he felt the other LBs in-house will be better. Thank you for your service Hightower, Collins and Van Noy, but now let’s see what Uche, Jennings, Wilson and McMillan can do.

Add the CB firm of Jones, Jones and Jones to the mix, plus another all-purpose safety in Peppers, and I’d say the secondary, as usual, will be a position of strength. Casual observer’s say, “But they lost JC Jackson,” and, in fact, they did. But they gained Jonathan Jones, who was better covering the slot then JC was covering outside (ask Tyreke Hill, who, oh by the way, is now in the division).

Happy Days have returned to Foxborough. Which means misery for everywhere else.

  25. Mac Jones had an average year last season. And he did it as a rookie. He far outperformed all of his draft class peers. And what people like to over look, he also did it against the 5th hardest schedule (as in, the pass defenses that he faced). I dont understand the hate, or these stupid comments about his noodle arm and all of that. Is it just lack of intelligence, trolling, or fear that he might have a little bit of Brady in him? Disclaimer, he will never be Brady. No one will. But he definitely has the “it” that you look for in a QB. Brady had “it with minimal athletic ability, a weak arm, etc. Now Mac Jones is a qb with minimal athletic ability, and a weak arm, that just makes the right play, over and over.

Oh, so you were at practice and film meetings?

If BB was garbage and the players he got were garbage (your exact words), why did Brady willingly sign extension after extension for less than market value to stay in NE for thanksgiving p years? Are you saying Brady was dumb and didn’t realize it? Why did he take LESS money there? Why didn’t he get paid his value? Why didn’t he force a trade?

You know why? Because Brady knew Belichick was the best coach and it was his best opportunity for him to succeed.

I thought the banner for the Pats last year was going to be “winning the division in early December.” I’ve still heard that all offseason – how they “almost” won the division.

Patriots fans bragging about almost winning the division. Isn’t that somethin’.

When the Bills win the SB, you’ll know it. We won’t have to let you know.

  31. Cancerman 2020,

One, I had paid attention to the videos of off-season practices, never saw he worked with offense before, let alone working with QB.

Two, do you know how much risk Brady took to go to a new team? Just imagine if he had failed winning a SB, all the talk would be that he needed Belichick to win SB. Of course now he won one, all the pressure is on Belichick now.

  32. We now know from former Patriots Defensive Coordinator Dean Peas that BB was working daily with Brady and taught him how to read defenses.. Clearly BB was responsible for turning a 6th round pick into the GOAT. He will work wonders with Mac….

  33. Now Mac Jones is a qb with minimal athletic ability, and a weak arm, that just makes the right play, over and over.

    —-
Jones arm isn’t weak, it’s adequate. Let’s see how it is now that he’s in better shape. He made some good throws to the seam last year that a weak arm would have had knocked down or intercepted. But his arm can’t overcome tight man coverage when his receivers can’t get open and he struggles there.

  34. You Bills fans love this. When is the banner going up?

Eh their team gave them the right to chirp. They beat NE handily in the playoffs and have won 4 of their last 5. They aren’t that far off from owning a 7 game win streak against us. A good weather day in the game in Buffalo last year, plus the two games in 2019. I forgot how horrible Brady was in that first Bills game in 2019.

  35. BTW, cancerman,

Did you hear any offense play designa coming from Belichick? NEVER.

In SB against Chiefs, the TD by Lenny was designed by Bruce Arians.

So how is it possible that a coach invented a system but never had any input on play designs? It is “Earth must be flat because I can’t see it is round” nonsense, OK?

Funny someone uses Belichick’s close friend’s words, one of those system believers who had believed in “system”, to prove that “Mozart was great beyond his teacher.”

  36. Bills fans should be careful about lobbing insults on this kid. The trend lately is to favor the athletic talent over the cerebral approach. I can tell you that Josh Allen, who seems like a very nice guy and a very talented QB, was not thought to be the most intellectually challenging student of the game coming out of high school which may be why he didn’t have offers from 4 year schools, and went the Junior College route, then to Wyoming. There could be other reasons for this as well, but there were questions about him from the neck up. Belichick appears to be morphing his defense with a bunch of interchangeable parts, that may be harder to diagnose pre and post snap. Simultaneously he has an intellectual QB he is so confident about, he is not naming an OC. The men charged with coaching him know less about the offense than the QB does, yet this is fine for the Hall of Fame Coach. While from the outside there appears to be so many things that have to go right that it seems unlikely to come together this season, the coach seems quietly optimistic. I’d question other coaches in this situation, but I’ve seen this coach go his own way so many times and be right, that I have to respect what history says his results will likely be. I personally think that with all the coaching changes, o-line changes, and changes on defense with linebackers and secondary players, and with such a tough early and late season schedule that duplicating last seasons results but winning a playoff game (my floor for a successful season) will be a challenge. But will anyone be surprised if after a brief early struggle they put it together and become a force in their division and conference? What if it is NE that knocks Buffalo out of the playoffs and brings their Super Bowl or Bust season to a screeching halt? You know it could happen. Deep down, you know.

  37. I am not worried about Mac’s arm strength to beat tight man coverage. Brady was lethal against man coverage because he knew how to exploit matchups. That came from watching a lot game film of opposing defenses and working with his receivers so he knew how to throw them open against certain DBs. Mac will get better with experience and working with his receivers.

  38. Kyler Murray should choose Mac Jones as his lab partner – with Jones writing the reports, at least Murray will get an “A” in the lab portion of the course.

    ==========================================================================
You are reading too much into my comment. I am not saying his arm is weak. I am saying the label on him is he is unathletic, and has a weak arm.

  40. “So he’s putting pressure on Jones like Tyreek is putting pressure on Tua” no, saying someone is showing an improvement in his preparedness is not remotely the same as saying that they’re the most accurate QB in the league. Huge difference between recognizing your QBs efforts and improvements of himself (that’s encouragement, not pressure) vs comparing him to mahomes and hyping him up as the best in the NFL at something (that is massive pressure)

  41. I foresee Mac Jones to be better than last year. I also believe he will be the best pick from the 2021 draft. Will he win a Super Bowl? Time will tell. But the AFC is crowded with elite young QBs. Very tough division and conference!

  42. William –
So Brady stayed in NE because he was scared of failing? Is that what you’re saying?

Why would it be a risk if the players/coaches in NE were garbage like you keep saying. Any other team , even very good ones, would have traded for him or paid top dollar in free agency. He could pick any team. And since NE garbage he should have been able to make any team a winner, right?

In the end, he did pick a loaded team and he won another SB.

  43. Cancerman2020,

FYI, Michael Jordan would have won only 3 championships if NBA playoff was one-game series. There was no guarantee that he could win SB within 2 years with a new team.(Brady was 40).

The relationship between Belichick and Brady hot sour only after 5th SB, before then, Brady appreciated that Belichick drafted him, and let him be the starter of the first SB.

Belichick is a garbage on offense. Belichick believers can claim whatever they want, but the quick and short passing system works ONLY WHEN a QB can digest the information like super computer and can make decisions a fraction of second quicker. It has nothing to do with Belichick.

To say Belichick made Brady is like claiming he can be Albert Einstein if he was taught by Einstein’s teacher

  44. You guys crack me up.

6 Titles, and all you do is bicker.

  45. Here is what Patriots QB coach said about Cam Newton:

    — “He has to continue to do a better job reacting and understanding that the looks are always going to be a little bit different,” said Fisch. “They are always going to be a little bit faster on Sundays and he is going to have to quickly translate the game from the practice field to the game field. We’re all going to have to do a better job helping him there.”

See the “a little bit faster”? That is the difference Brady made. It is all on QB’s intelligence, like a math teacher can teach math equations to every student, it is utterly stupid to think that every student will be able to pass.exams.

  46. Tom Brady isn’t worthy of being on the same field as the real GOAT Joe Montana. Joe carried his teams to Super Bowls his team didn’t carry him. Joe also had real talent he didn’t need to cheat to be good.

It would be interesting to see how many Titles Joe might have if he had a creampuff conference like Brady did, instead of having to go through Gibbs, Parcells/Belichick and Buddy Ryans Bears defense.

  48. TLiM,

One, Joe played very bad against those defenses, even worse tha Brady’s worst playoff games.

Two, it doesn’t matter if Brady could win SB with any other teams, it is that the team Belichick built wouldn’t have won a single SB with any other QB.

  49. I don’t know about the future, but for now Jones is still better than half the QBs in this league!

  50. You are reading too much into my comment. I am not saying his arm is weak. I am saying the label on him is he is unathletic, and has a weak arm.

Creampuff division for sure. The AFC Least when Brady was in NE was the worst division over a 20 year timespan in pro football and maybe all of pro sports. Not hard to make a deep playoff run every year when you’re guaranteed byes and a home playoff game virtually every season.

2-0 against Buddy, actually.. didn’t have to play them in ’85
1-1 against Gibbs.. 2 good games, the loss was by a field goal (24-21)

Belichick definitely had his number. Knocked him out of 2 games, cost him starting job in ’90, and a shot at a 3-peat.

Brady never played against a single team as this good. Let alone going up against 4 of them at once.

Of course there is no way prove that. I just finished watching 06 AFCC Patriots vs Colts game on youtube and at no single point in that game did I say only Brady could make that throw to Troy Brown or Jabar Gaffney.

What I also noticed was yes Manning had better WRs but the Patriots were better on defense, special teams which complimented the offense, better RBs, better O-line. The Patriots were a very good balanced team that could have won with Manning or Aaron Rodgers or any other HOF QB.

    ——————–

They were not idiots they just believed their offenses were so great they could score their way to championships which was not true. Because it only takes one very good defensive performance in the post season to derail even a historic great offense like the 2008 New England Patriots or 2013 Denver Broncos or 2001 St Louis Rams.

  60. Do you know that Pats offense were among top 4 for 9 straight seasons?

If both offenses score 27 points, whose way of playing is better for his TEAM, Brady’s or Rodgers’s (or Manning)?

Nothing you have said explains why he stayed in NE for 20 years willingly taking less money than he was worth of BB was garbage and all the players were garbage. If that was the case he would have left earlier to play for a better coach and team and take his chances there…unless of course he was either dumb or afraid of failure….which neither of us believe he was or is.

The reason he stayed is because Belichick was the best coach and Brady knows it. Most rational people know it as well.

  62. Lol, I said that he had appreciated Belichick’s drafting him and giving him the starter in SB 42.

As long as he could win, why would he try learning new playbooks and starting from a beginning again? Would you take the risk?

We will see if Belichick is the best coach in next two or three years, it is not something under your control or under my control.

If he doesn’t call plays on offense when it struggles, then Belichick has played little to none roles in offense in last 20 years. It is no under your control or under my control either

How Pats offense would be like in regular season with other QB doesn’t matter, no other QB would be able to do what Brady did in playoff with the cheap squad given by Belichick the CHEAP.

Like putting Rodgers in Bucs, he might win MVP, but he wouldn’t be able to score 30+ in three consecutive playoff games, hence no SB.

    +++++++

Says a guy who will drop his underwear if someone accuses him of stealing money and hiding the money between two legs.

  67. Let’s revisit this after BB swoops in and signs Jimmy G after the 9ers cut him. It’s the Belichickian thing to do. What fun that will be!

  68. Hopefully come the start of the season we will see how much Mac has improved. This pats fan is excited for the season

I think the 49ers are making a mistake. Could be wrong though.

  70. I’m never surprised when a second year QB shows improvement. I’m always stunned when it catches someone by surprise. In case somebody missed Tom Brady’s career, the QB position is mostly mental. Tom’s the worst athlete I’ve ever seen play QB. The guys that can recognize what the defense is going to do after the ball is snapped are the QB’s that have success in the NFL. That comes from lots of studying. Lots of film work. Most successful NFL QB’s didn’t perform all that well their rookie season. Opposing defensive coordinators are usually way ahead of a rookie QB.
