Jerry Jones: Mike McCarthy wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think he’d lead us to a Super Bowl

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this week that the speculation about his job status is nothing more than a media-driven narrative.

That may or may not be true. But the chatter became loud enough for team owner Jerry Jones to address it during the opening statement of his annual press conference to open training camp on Tuesday.

“One of the issues I want to address directly because I guess it’s the one that probably have the most sensitivity about, and that is Mike and him coaching,” Jones said. “And I want to be real clear — he wouldn’t be sitting here today if I didn’t think he was the man to lead this team to a Super Bowl. He would not be. And I have choices.

“So that’s not meant to be insensitive to anybody, that’s a fact. And so you guys write about a lot of those choices and they were there for my use had I wanted them. And no, the guy to my right is who I’m convicted about. Have been. We certainly have had things we’ve addressed and the way we’ve addressed them in the offseason, I think we have successfully put together a staff that really, from this vantage point, gives us absolutely the best chance — with our makeup and our team — to get to the ultimate success. So I want to be real clear about that.”

Jones was later asked if he has that kind of confidence, then has McCarthy been rewarded with a contract extension? Jones said that hasn’t happened, but McCarthy still has “multiple years” left on his deal with Dallas.

McCarthy himself said that Jones’ full-throated endorsement lines up with what the longtime owner has said privately. But McCarthy would prefer to focus on football at this point.

“If I’m going to demand it from the coaches and the players and support staff to keep the focus tight and just keep focused on things that have to do with winning, then obviously I have to do that myself,” McCarthy said.

The problem is, the speculation about McCarthy and the Cowboys job is unlikely to go away — particularly with Sean Payton out there as a candidate to take over. As noted in Playmakers, Payton was close to becoming Dallas’ head coach just a few years ago.

If the Cowboys get off to a disappointing start, the chatter about McCarthy’s status is only going to grow louder as the season continues.

  1. MM’s prior SB win with the Pack was led by Aaron Rodgers, not the coach. The question in Dallas is if Dak can do the same?

  2. now that Urban Meyer is gone, McCarthy has a good chance to win “worst head coach in the NFL” honors.

  3. Its pretty disrespectful by the media to keep asking MM about Sean Payton. He has already answered those questions. His replies are available. Be professional.

  4. News flash. The only reason McCarthy is there is because No one else wants the job and no one else wants McCarthy,

  5. Yes he would Jerruh because no respectable head coach with options is interested in working for you.

  6. I can’t wait for the gaslighting next year when the dirty, backroom Payton deal comes to light. I’m sure all these lies will be forgotten.

  7. He’s a great pilot.

He’ll take you right to the scene of the crash.

  8. Fans of “The Boys” can expect more of MM’s stale offense as the season progresses. Fortunately, Dallas has a very good DC who could easily lead the team in the event MM is let go.

  9. Listening to that Jerry Jones press conference was painful he must have said UH 4000 times!

  10. If MM follows his Green Bay pattern, the Cowboys will have a good but unimaginative offense, a defense that falters at key times and lousy special teams. McCarthy also is likely the worst coach in the league when it comes to crucial time management. If the Cowboys played in the AFC West they would be 6-11.

  11. So if MM doesn’t deliver the SB Jerry thinks he will he will be replaced. Probably with SP who won an SB with NO.

  12. McCarthy is not going anywhere as Jones is loyal and stubborn about his decisions. From what I ve read the game has passed McCarthy by. The D was good but was buoyed by high turnovers. This is likely to regress and the D may come back too.
They’d by the 4th best team in NFC W

  13. Fatter Sean Payton continues to get abused.
Until he gets replaced by Sean Payton who won’t get the abuse, but will get similar results.

  14. Jones needs to hire a genuine general manager and get the heck out of the way. Dallas won’t win until that happens.

  15. “he wouldn’t be sitting here if Sean Payton was available.” There fixed it for ya Jerruh.

  16. As long as Jerrah and his sons insist on playing at being General Managers, the Cowboys will win nothing.

  17. He is the headcoach until he is not, just ask Wade, et al. If McCarthy has a losing record by game 5 or 6 see his access badge being turned off and Jerry flipping a coin to see if Kellen or Dan will be the interim coach.

  18. Typical over hype of the Cowboys.MM is a SB winning coach that had a great QB leading the team.Sounds just like Sean Payton.Won 1 SB with a great QB in his prime and never came close to doing it again.Payton and McCarthy will make a team relevant but not sure they can win a SB without an incredible QB.Dallas does not have a top 5 QB.Not even top 10 QB.In today’s NFL you need the QB to be next level.Reality of this is there are only a handful of teams that are legit contenders..Chiefs,Bills,Bucs,Packers,Bengals,Rams,and a few teams that if they get a break the QBs are good enough maybe to win.Raiders,Chargers, and Ravens. Not sure we will ever see another Dilfer like QB win a SB.

  19. Unless McCarthy takes the Cowboys deep into the playoffs, McCarthy is history. Sean Payton is on deck.

  20. If McCarthy doesn’t deliver on the “winning” this season, it’s almost guaranteed that someone else will be the Cowboys HC next year. Jerry’s window is closing fast on that Super Bowl victory. I just can’t imagine Sean Payton putting up with Jerry Jone’s meddling, but the right dollar amount could do the trick.

  21. Mike McCarthy + Aaron Rodgers= 1 SB victory
Sean Payton + Drew Brees= 1 SB victory

    Mike McCarthy=Sean Payton

  22. We love Jerruh but he needs to fire himself and get a real GM. they will NEVER win the super Bowl with this QB or the coach he has right now. Zero% chance of that happening

  23. He has produced impressive results. He has beaten the weakest division in football last year and couldn’t figure out how to handle 15 seconds of the last game. He sure inspires many about winning a Snoopy Bowl.

So … Cowboys have a future HOF HC in McCarthy. What can go wrong? LOL

Hidden in all the stats is context. McCarthy is generally been panned for being lazy, for having game passed him by, for being bad in situational football. Payton is widely respected and would have gone to another Super Bowl if not a flagrant PI by rams CB.

  26. McCarthy was the perfect Cowboy hire. When he was with the Packers (1 Super Bowl & 50 more wins than losses) it was understood that Ted Thompson made all the player personnel decisions, that is why the Cowboys hired him because the situation in Dallas is exactly the same. In almost all other similar winning situations the head coach wants the ability to pick his players ala Parcells who said if I have to make the dinner let me buy the groceries and the Cowboys then jettisoned him.

That was when he was with the Pats when he said that and they let him walk to Jets… then years later, Jerry gave him control till Jerry signed “The Player” and Parcells said to hell with this and quit..
