Report: Jimmy Garoppolo passes physical, wiping out $7.5 million injury guarantee

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo passed his physical Tuesday and thus won’t be placed on the active/physically unable to perform list, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.

That wipes out Garoppolo’s $7.5 million injury guarantee, leaving no guaranteed money on his contract unless he’s on the team’s roster Week 1. (Spoiler alert: He won’t be.)

Garoppolo underwent surgery on his right shoulder on March 8 and only recently started throwing again.

His surgery took the 49ers by surprise and brought trade talks to a “screeching halt.” With Garoppolo healthy again, the 49ers are seeking to deal him.

Until then, Garoppolo will not practice or play with the team as the 49ers put him in bubble wrap.

Garoppolo went 31-14 in the regular season as the 49ers’ quarterback after they traded for him in 2017.

He has thrown for 11,852 yards, 71 touchdowns and 38 interceptions in his eight NFL seasons.

  1. I can’t for the life of me figure out why you get rid of a playoff caliber quarterback who’s dedicated himself to the team. He outperforms his compensation. Some guys don’t live up to what they’re paid.

  2. Based on Stats his starting record alone, every NFL team should be clamoring to trade for Jimmy G. The guy is 31-14 as a starter. 71-28 touchdown ratio. That is superior to Deshaun Watson and Kyler Murray who were just awarded massive contracts. So why are the 49ers giving up on him and his reasonable $25 million contract? I’ll call it arrogance. Shanahan thinks he’s such a good coach that he can win with Trey Lance. But his record doesn’t support that. Jimmy G made Shanahan a winner. Trey Lance, for all his potential, is going to have a rocky season. Some flashes, no doubt. But it might look ugly. Justin Fields and Zach Wilson had ugly seasons last year. Wouldn’t be surprised it Lance takes his lumps in the 2022-23 season.

  3. Watching Shanahan’s demeanor on the sideline and during press conferences and how he has treated JG, a veteran that has given so much to his team, is there anyone more easier to detest than this guy?

  4. Glorious. Did he do himself any favor? He is going to be cut and sign a new contract somewhere. Will he really lose any money? Welcome back and as your grandma would say, such a handsome guy. You’re playing somewhere.

  5. 9ers need to take whatever they can get and just send him on his way. He has helped with turning the franchise around but his time has passed.

  6. JG has made around $120 million already, not counting his endorsements. And he WILL fetch a new 8-figure contract from somebody at some point in his near future. I’m not gonna spend too many cycles fretting over any career risks to Jimmy.

  7. No chance they cut him. He’s the only starting caliber QB on the roster. He’s a delicate China doll but it’s all they’ve got besides the career backup from last year”s draft.

  8. The surgery took the 49ers by surprise. See,John and Kyle thought Jimmy would certainly keep his surgery plans a secret until after they got rid of him. How insensitive of Jimmy to not be a good company man.

  9. Let’s see.. if he passes the physical the 49ers save 7.5 million and boost the chances they can get something for him in trade. I’d say the chances of the 49ers saying he failed the physical were right around zero.

  10. 9ers really jerking this guy around. What Baker got a 6th, Jimmy get UDFA? Come on 9ers! Free the Jimmy!

  11. Well Dolphins fans certainly want him off the roster ASAP, then it’s all on Lance for that draft pick. With Jimmy G you knew they’d at least be solid and that pick wouldn’t be that great.

At least with Lance there is the potential for suckitude.

  12. Of course he did. At this point he would have had to show-up without a right arm for the niners to fail him!

  13. He probably won’t be but the 49ers have shown a reluctance to just let him walk and no team has been willing to give a pick for him.

  14. Did he pass because he is healthy? OR did he pass because there is 7.5 million reasons for him to pass? That said, what happens if they trade him, and the new team fails his physical? Would the 49ers then be back on the hook for the $7.5 mil?

  15. No matter how good someone looks in college or even camp/preseason you still do not know how they are for real until you have seen them perform consistently against real NFL talent over a span of time, and adjusting as NFL coaches scheme against their strengths. Lance looks good on many levels but he is still an unknown. The 9rs would serve themselves well to just hold onto him as insurance unless offered a kings ransom. Bird in hand has value here in this situation.

  16. Niners probably have a Super Bowl if they had someone better than Jimmy the last few years.

  17. Ladies and gentlemen meet the newest Seattle Seahawk QB. Will be a excellent signing for them.

  18. Mind boggling that this guy is still in the league and some sucker GM will make the trade for a player that has started less than 50% of his time in SF.

  19. I’d say Jimmy G is top 20 in starting qb’s in the NFL. He’s got an elite release, and he’ll be a great leader for the Browns while Watson learns how to be.

  20. Alright he passed the physical and you saved the $7.5 million.

Now do right by Jimmy and either cut him now or decide to do a 180 and have him start for another year instead of continuing to leave him in limbo.

There are plenty of teams who I could see being in on Garoppolo as a free agent and giving him a chance to compete: For starters, Seahawks and Texans (if they don’t tank), Giants (upgrade over Jones), Cowboys (as Dak insurance since they have no backup), Lions (upgrade over Goff), Dolphins (upgrade over Tua plus familiarity with McDaniel), Browns (upgrade over Brissett and would be an actual adult in the room), Bears, Jets, and Jaguars (chance to compete with Fields, Wilson, and Lawrence and potentially start if they still need more seasoning, plus in NY’s case, familiarity with Saleh/Lafleur).

  21. Amazing what a really good defense and a decent offensive scheme will do for a QB. See Brady, Tom

  22. trey lance must be loving all of this… its just adding more and more pressure on him to get off to a hot start

  23. Obviously I’m a Patriots fan and would have loved to see Garapollo succeed Brady. BB would have kept the streak going and the transition would have been much smoother. However, that didn’t happen.

For the life of me, I don’t know why this kid gets tossed around. Say what you want about him, he’s fragile (yes), injury prone, etc., but at the end of the day, all he does is WIN……

I was always a S.F. Fan too.. Montanna was as clutch as Brady and if stayed healthy, would have been up there with more Super Bowls and accolades. However, S.F. under Kyle Shannahan I can’t stand. His arrogance will prevent that team from being a long –term dynasty again… You can be as arrogant as you want when you win something, just see Belichick (however, I love BB). but, if he didn’t have the cache he has, all the crap he pulls would never fly…

Anyway, Garapollo is a winner and will continue to win. I hope he lands on a team that can appreciate his talent, he will make that organization much better who ever it is…..

  24. His trade value is zero. The 49ers have botched this almost as badly as the Browns botched the Mayfield scenario. So why do the Browns get killed while people bend over backwards to defend how the niners handled this?

His stats are misleading. The reality is that Jimmy G chokes in big moments. The win against Green Bay in last year’s playoffs may have been the worst playoff performance I have ever seen by a winning QB. Jimmy was bailed out by Rodgers bad play & somehow even worse play by GB’s special teams. Jimmy G choked with a lead in the 4th quarter of last years NFC championship & the super bowl loss to the chiefs a few years ago. I believe a competent QB wins both of those games.

  26. So why do they want to get rid of this guy?

    ———————————————-

They do want him around because they don’t want him to win the job in a QB competition. Which he would because he is better than Trey Lance right now. Players on the team will wonder why he is not playing.

The Pats record the season before Brady started was 5-11, with Belichick. Tampa hadn’t made the playoffs in over a decade before Brady went there. Seems that Brady is what made those schemes successful.

  28. Ok, your turn now Lynch. Jimmy should not be on the team in a week’s time.
Just good business sense and better optics. If he signs with the Seahawks, that’s fine. He will not make them super bowl worthy anyway

  29. only reason no team has traded for him, Is everyone knew the 49ers was gonna cut him before start of season if nobody traded for him. once he is cut a team will sign him..

  30. Does anyone else wonder if money effects the outcome of these physicals? There are 7.5 million reasons the doctors employer wants him to pass. I am probably just being paranoid, right?

  31. I think Jimmy is playing this well. He knows he has a huge payday coming at some point.

  32. Huge mistake drafting Lance and another one is getting rid of Jimmi G. i would take him over almost 25-29 QB;s in the league All he does is win games!! Why are the 9 ers doing this at all the other kid can sit for a while and wait.

  33. The 49ers are like gamblers and stock investors who think the best bet is to double down on a losing proposition. Unless Lance gets hurt in preseason (certainly could happen, one follow through that hits a helmet or shoulder pad is all it takes), Jimmy G will be released as no one will pay him $24 million and no one will trade for him. In other words, SF will have to pay a good portion of his salary in a trade. Maybe they’ve already calculated that into things as a possibility (high price to pay to get a lower draft choice). But that’s why they get paid the big bucks to figure this stuff out.

  34. Kind of dirty he’s been cleared and San Fran is still holding onto him squatting in his rights. Nobody is going to pay him 25 million dollars and give up a draft pick for him. He will most likely be a high end backup this year. But at the same time he did hold them up on having his surgery.

  35. Many repeat time and again Re: Jimmy G “… he wins games” and cite his record (which is very good) while wondering why he’s not a keeper. If all it was predicated on WAS winning games, the question would be fair. However, to potential trade partners and to the Niners, just “winning games” apparently or obviously was not/is not good enough. Why? It may come down to something a Tampa Buc coach recently stated, “…if he could throw, he would have won two super bowls.”

  36. I’m sorry, just found reference to previous entry: Rick Stroud, Beat Writer for the Tampa Bay Bucs quoted a Tamp Bay Coach who stated, “If Garoppolo could throw a deep ball, he would’ve won two Super Bowls already.”

  37. 9ers are squatting on his rights because they know he is likely going to end up in Seattle and they want to minimize the time he has to learn the Seattle system. How embarrassing if he beats the 9ers twice this year.
