Seahawks, Dolphins, Texans are the betting favorites to land Jimmy Garoppolo

Several days ago, the 49ers essentially invited one or more of the other 31 teams to make an offer, any offer, for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Since then, there has been (checks Twitter) no reporting of any team, name or unnamed, having interest in Garoppolo.

It appears that the 49ers and Garoppolo have decided, at least for now, to wait for a starting quarterback with another team to suffer a season-ending injury. It would be a win-win for team and player; the 49ers would get a more significant return, and Garoppolo would be more likely to get all or most of his $25 million compensation package for the final year of his current contract.

But season-ending injuries to starting quarterbacks don’t happen on a regular basis during training camp (where they aren’t touched) or the preseason (where they rarely play). Unless a starter goes down or someone makes a bargain-basement offer (and Garoppolo agrees to a much lower salary), he’s getting cut — likely when the rosters move to 53.

Eventually, he’ll join another team. He’s on the fringe of the top twenty, which means that roughly 10 starters are worse than him. So, yes, he’ll get another opportunity.

The folks at DraftKings have posted three favorites. The Seahawks have the shortest odds, +275. Next, the Dolphins (sorry, TuAnon) at +330. In third position are the Texans, at +400.

Seattle would be a compelling landing spot, for obvious reasons. Including the fact that Seattle visits San Francisco in Week Two. For now, however, coach Pete Carroll seems to be intent to make it work with Geno Smith or Drew Lock.

Of course, Miami would be a compelling outcome, too. They have Teddy Bridgewater on board as the backup. The Dolphins presumably would pick Garoppolo as the potential replacement not for the backup but for the starter.

Does that sound crazy? Ask yourself this question. Which quarterback between Jimmy Garoppolo and Tua Tagovailoa is more accomplished? Which one would be the more likely to get the most out of an otherwise stacked Miami team, with former 49ers assistant Mike McDaniel running the show with the Kyle Shanahan offense?

It seems unlikely, since the Dolphins are all in on Tua. After, of course, they tried to get Deshaun Watson in 2021 and Tom Brady in 2022. Other than that, they’re all in with Tua.

So how all in are they? They clearly made a mistake by taking Tua over Justin Herbert with the fifth pick in the 2020 draft. Some teams that make a mistake admit it and move on, which the Dolphins tried to do by pursuing Watson and Brady. Other teams that make mistakes double down. Which the Dolphins may be doing now.

Maybe it’s just a question of whether the Dolphins can make a big upgrade or a mild one. Regardless, the folks who have every reason to know the lay of the land have the Dolphins at 3.3-to-1 to get Garoppolo.

Finally, the Texans. Their G.M., Nick Caserio, drafted Garoppolo in New England eight years ago. They claim to be ready to go with Davis Mills. Which is exactly the best way to play it, if they’re secretly waiting for a chance to snatch Garoppolo as a low-cost free agent.

Which he absolutely will be, unless a starting quarterback blows out an Achilles or rips up an ACL in the next month.

  1. I dont see the Dolphins. Cant say one way or the other whether Tua succeeds or not but I think they are all in on him this year to do it. Jimmy is better at this point and would make a fine stop gap but I dont think they derail Tuas opportunity for Jimmy Garoppolo. Youd think theyd have their sights set a bit higher than that if/when it comes to finding Tuas replacement.

  2. “He’s on the fringe of the top twenty”

Really? He took the Niners to a Superbowl and a SUper Bowl, and 2 NFC Championships in 3 years. In 2021 he was #12 in total passing yards and had a QBR better than Josh Allen, Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes.

I think that the Niners are foolish to let him go. I hope he goes to Miami where he’ll likely end up being the starter in a Niners-style offense.

  3. Wow! I haven’t been paying attention. . .
Seattle is choosing between Geno Smith and Drew Lock?
Why aren’t they throwing money at Jimmy G?

Also, I disagree with the notion that Jimmy ranks among the 10 worst starters in the league. I could name at least 17 teams with worse starting QBs.

    Seattle
    Houston
    NYG
    NYJ
    Miami
    Pittsburgh
    *Cleveland
    Indy
San Fran, after they cut Jimmy
    Jax
    Washington
    Arizona
    Atlanta
    Carolina
    Detroit
    New Orleans
    Philly

  4. The Texans really believe that Mills has a chance to be the guy so you can scratch them off the list

  5. Seattle Seahawks will want JimmyG, especially for SF system information. I feel that the best move for SF is to make a trade outside the Division by eating more of the current contract dollars. That’s the only way to make it happen. If they don’t, Seahawks will get him; no question.

I’m ambivalent about JimmyG’s showing up In Seattle, but because it’s making it difficult for SF, I’m enjoying this situation.

  6. Miami has no need for Jimmy. They currently have the most accurate QB in the league. Just ask Tyreek.

  7. Dolphins first 4 opponents are the Patriots, Ravens, Bills and Bengals, all losable games. I could definitely see the Dolphins looking to sign Jimmy G if they start 0-4.

  8. It doesn’t matter who he plays for he’ll only be in for about 8 games before he gets injured and is out for the year.

  9. I get a sense that the Miami brass has little faith in Tua. Seems like their interested in every QB that comes on the market.

  10. Of those 3, the Texans make the most sense, they’ve a new coach and next to nothing invested in the current starter.
I don’t see the Niners trading him to the Seahawks, regardless of how many bettors lay money on that. An in-division trade of a starting caliber quarterback is practically unhead of. Seattle would have the sell the farm to pull that off.
The Dolphins aren’t much more likely, the GM and owner haven’t quit on Tuo, and they already have quality backup/bridge if they need one in Bridgewater.
I’d be more inclined to keep an eye on the Giants and Commanders, as their qb situations are a bit more dicey.

  11. He’s going to Seattle I’ve been saying it since last year. They played this perfectly. They refused to give the 49ers their asking price, and they knew eventually he’d be getting his walking papers.

  12. Dont count out the Giants … Jimmy G could be a good mentor before taking the job from Jones.

  13. Now Mike you were on WQAM Friday morning and Joe Rose explained to you at length the Dolphins are all in on Tua and they would not be getting Jimmy and you still write this unfactual piece on Miami QB situation…

  14. Niners will regret trading him and whoever gets him is guaranteed a playoff spot. Top 12 QB. See above posts, also, all he does is win.

  15. Another typical Tua bashing story. No way in the world the Dolphins go for Jimmy G. I love each article brings up Tua vs Herbert every time too. What has Herbert done? Tua literally has a better W-L record and with not a single bit a support in the last 2 seasons. Herbert puts up big numbers because he went to a top 8 Offense. Tua went to the 30th ranked. Give it rest already or at least wait until mid-season to bash him. The QB worth mentioning is Burrow. He went from the 29th ranked O and in one year made them 13th. Even Josh Allen took 3 years to show success and that took pieces and time.

  16. The Dolphins have Tua. if he doesn’t improve they need to draft a QB, not go with Garoppolo.

The Texans need to draft a QB next year if Davis Mills doesn’t improve.

  17. I really do t get why Jimmy gets no respect, only took the 49ers to super bowl and he played well. The defense lost it for them in the 2nd half not him. Look at his numbers, ok he gets hurt sometimes but when he’s on the filed he wins, and is a leader, I don’t get it. But, they give guys like Watson and Murray these monster deals hoping they turn into a real nfl starting qb and Jimmy is put out to pasture for trey Lance, really? The 49ers did the same thing with Alex Smith and kapernik, tossed away the real nfl starter hoping to find the next big thing and look how that worked out. Going to be the same this time, I’m a dolphins fan so I hope the fins get him and we can have a chance to build a winning culture again

  18. “Now Mike you were on WQAM Friday morning and Joe Rose explained to you at length the Dolphins are all in on Tua and they would not be getting Jimmy and you still write this unfactual piece on Miami QB situation…”

Have you considered the possibility that Joe Rose is extremely gullible?

  19. The best team for Garoppolo already has him. Trading a known winning quantity for an unproven newbie, with a win-now roster, is a desperation move.

Herbert would have been wasted on the Dolphins. It’s a clown organization.

The Seahawks seem the best other fit. They seem determined to win based on other elements besides the QB. Would take some pressure off Garoppolo.

  20. I think once he is cut he will end up in Miami and we all know why. Every team out there knows they have to release him, so nobody will make an offer.

  21. If Mills somehow develops into a quality QB, the Texans will take it. Outside of that, they’re still in Lose Now mode, hoping for better draft position. And it’ll make it easier to justify dumping Lovie so they can hire McCown. Garopollo would screw all that up for them.

  22. kyle shanahan really doesnt like Jimmy G, for whatever reason.
the last season or two it seemed like there was absolutely zero that Jimmy G could do to win him around, because he didnt want to be won around

  23. Concerning Jimmy G, there’s good and bad.
The good: He can sling the ball, he makes good decisions.
The Bad: He’s as durable as a Precious Moments figurine in an antique store.

  24. The Texans are awful and Jimmy G isn’t the answer. It is Mills or bust in Houston.

Jimmy G could light it up and turn the Seahawks into a fringe playoff team… faced with another massive QB contract. Embrace the tank in Seattle!

No idea about the Dolphins other than that sports radio experts are often full of it. So it’s probably Miami.

  25. Seahawks won’t want Jimmy – that is fo-sho

they’ve seen the best of him – and beaten him consistently, i’m sure they would rather roll the dice with Drew Lock, a cheap kid with upside vs an older player, more expensive, with an injury history and checkered performance

  26. This site has become pretty silly. You just throw things out there like Garappolo to Dolphins which is absurd. There is no good case for that and unless there is some seriously insider info from the organization (doubtful) you are just making things up. That team knows many QB’s would beat out Tua, and he is basically a less accomplished Jummy G so whats the point?

  27. Giants have no money, have already released several starters. They would have to cut their offensive line and Barkley to pay Jimmy.

  28. Wait. Seattle sucked with Wilson, and they’re a fringe playoff team with Jimmy G? This team needs a total rebuild like the jets, but Pete refuses to do it. Everybody in the division got better and oh yeah, J Adams is hurt again already

  29. The Texans have zero interest in Garrapolo. IMills is either the guy or they’re drafting the next guy next year. Speculation of Garrapolo going there is a pure media invention.

  30. Texans are playing with House money with Mills. He has certainly earned an opportunity and if it works out the Texans are suddenly geniuses. If it doesn’t work out..well there’s all those draft picks next year with Houstons #1 and Clevelands #1. Thank You Cleveland

  31. Jimmy G isn’t going to be the long term solution in Seattle who are rebuilding. He will be a better short term/ this year option than the two guys there, if they care about winning this year. Also tough to say how motivated Jimmy G will be in Seattle or anywhere for this year or next.

Seahawks are hoping in the next draft or somehow some young, mobile QB becomes available for cheap to mold the team around like they did Wilson…and may be willing to keep Geno and Lock rather then get another QB.

  32. I’m not sure how, or why, they trade for Jimmy unless it was already happening. The timing is off. If McDaniel was not in on Tua, Jimmy would be here. He knows what Jimmy is. Flores, that offensive genius didn’t like Tua. His amazing offensive coaching staff couldn’t figure out how to use Tua. Grier finally gave Tua some OL talent. I don’t think they would move on from Tua until after the season if he continued to fail with an actually offensive minded coach. Herbert has had some amazing tools at his disposal. Not sure why they would move on from Tua in August. Makes no sense…

  33. @ladyjet

The Seahawks were 7-10 with an injured Russell Wilson. If Jimmy G were to come in and light it up they could do better, which would make them a fringe playoff team.

The Seahawks do not want to be stuck as a fringe playoff team for the next decade and that is why Jimmy G is a NO for Seattle.

  34. The key to all of this is the 2023 draft. It’s going to be loaded with as many as 7 QBs in round 1 (depending of whom declares). It’s going to be as good of a draft for QBs as 1983 and 2021. Seattle : NO chance they’re going after G-string, they’re tanking for a franchise QB next year. Miami : they’re Tua or 2023 draft of which they have two 1st round picks if they want to move up. Texans : NO chance; Davis Mills would have been the 1st QB pick in the 2022 draft if he had stayed at Stanford, and did amazingly well considering the disastrous state of that team last year (incompetent head coach, no oline, worst running game in NFL, 1 quality WR, and on). Texans will give Mills every opportunity and if he fails, will go with QB in the 2023 draft. They also have two first round picks in 2023. Where is G-string going? New Orleans. The only possible team with an otherwise overall high-quality roster without a commensurate QB.

  35. Before josh allen, the bills would have been jn this conversation. Feels so great to not have to pin my hopes on tua or jimmy g

On what planet is Jimmy G better than Kyler Murray?? Certainly not on this one. Thats outright ludicrous, Jimmy G is nowhere near as good or as talented as Murray is.

  37. I wish Seattle would sign JimmyG. He could keep them from not being terrible but not great either.

  38. While Jimmy G would give Miami a good QB for the foreseeable future, I believe they will ride with Tua to see if he reaches his potential in year three, and if he does not, make that play for Brady in 2023 and try and buy a Super Bowl before Brady’s body turns on him. I doubt they want Jimmy G on the roster when they try to bring in Brady. He’d just be there for a year (the last year of the current contract) and then he’s be a free agent. In all three scenario’s, I see Miami coming up short again. They can’t seem to get out of their own way. Unless Tua ascends, they will likely have a short hurrah with Brady, and then be in QB No Man’s Land again. Tua will be gone, Jimmy will be gone, and Brady will be retired.

If they get Jimmy G, and he plays well, they could possibly forget about Brady. Jimmy could give them 5 good years if healthy. The big if.

    It’s a quandry.

  39. I don’t have a dog in this fight but. I’d love to see the Dolphins or Jets get him and beat New England twice. Bill Belichick is a great coach but, their draft selections of recent years have shown he’s lost his edge to father time. Go Chiefs!

  40. Is there some conspiracy against the Dolphins with the media now? This makes absolutely no sense… want me to prove it? Teddy Bridgewater is healthy and in Dolphins camp… don’t you think if there was a QB controversary we’d be hearing a lot more about that? The Dolphins went after Watson.. no one is doubting this… but they’ve never made an effort to go after any other QB (no, not even Brady)… as a Dolphins fan, this is starting to get annoying.

  41. I still say Jimmy G will definitely NOT go to the Seahawks whether it shows up on this site or not. He still feels some loyalty to the Niners. New York Giants are the only team that makes sense whether that shows up on this site or not. There – I’ve had my say.

  42. I agree with the comment above that Tua hasn’t been given a fair shake. He’s been trashed because he hasn’t put up stats like Herbert or had a SB run like Burrow. But the thing is Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence, Daniel Jones, heck even Josh Rosen have been given passes because of their circumstances. Tua hasn’t had that had that built in excuse in the media. And as a Miami fan you best believe he’s gone through it (multiple OCs, injured/lackluster surrounding cast, talk of replacement) all he’s done has been humble and kept working. A lot of players would’ve completely fallen apart by now. He hasn’t. You can say he has a weak arm but he obviously has the drive. I hope he silenced the critics. But I have a feeling that even if he does people will still criticize him and say “well the defense is good, he has a lot of weapons, it’s luck”. It’s funny because I’ve never seen a QB more hated on than Tua and yet all he’s done is posted a positive W/L record and TD/INT ratio. Who cares he’s not Pat Mahomes or Josh Allen, because neither is Mac Jones, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Joe Burrow, or Kyler Murray, yet they are all heralded. I’m confused by the current QB landscape because there are built in excuses for some but not others. Some are judged on W/L while some are judged on fantasy stats. Tua doesn’t get credit in either category. That’s why Tyreek Hill constantly stands up for him. It’s not to make more noise or money because he already has that. It’s because he’s legitimately standing up for a teammate who is constantly dragged.

  43. Why would you replace Tua with Jimmy G. At least leave him in for the pats games. He owns them.

  44. I hope Seattle gets him somehow or someway , but doubt it.. I think old Pete is determined to lose a lot of games this to get a higher draft pick !!
