On Monday, lawyer Tony Buzbee said he has nothing to say about the NFL’s process for imposing discipline on Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. On Thursday, he’ll have plenty to say, apparently.

Buzbee has called a press conference for 1:00 p.m. CT on Thursday. The stated purpose is “to update the public on the status of the Deshaun Watson and Houston Texans cases and to provide comment regarding the pending NFL proceedings.”

Several plaintiffs will be present, including Ashley Solis, the first of the massage therapists to sue Watson. The notice of the press conference says that the plaintiffs who attend “may share their thoughts.” Apart from the lawsuits filed against Watson, 30 Buzbee clients settled claims against the Texans, after one of them sued.

The plaintiffs and Buzbee will only be able to share so many of their thoughts, given that the settlement agreements signed by Solis and 22 of the other plaintiffs because the settlements (as Buzbee said Monday) are confidential. Typically, confidentiality clauses in settlement agreements sweep broadly to prevent any comment about the situation, allowing the parties to say only, “The matter has been resolved.”

There’s a good chance they’ll be saying more than that on Thursday, Barring an agreed extension of the NFL’s deadline for appealing to the NFL itself the six-game suspension imposed on Watson, we’ll likely know at the time the press conference commences whether an appeal has been filed.

The press conference undoubtedly is intended to pressure the league to impose a longer suspension on Watson.

Buzbee appeared Tuesday on ESPN’s First Take. With the Stephen Ross/Dolphins situation taking over the top spot on the NFL’s news stack, I’ve yet to watch it. It will be my reward for successfully completing my drive to Canton, which starts as soon as I press publish on this article.

As rewards go, I’d rather have some ice cream.

  1. He’s going to announce he now has enough money to take his picture off the bus bench.

  2. I’m going to LoLOLOLOL when he announces a few new lawsuits. 66-24=42 possible new cases.

  3. “He’s going to announce he now has enough money to take his picture off the bus bench.”

Buzbee has won billions of dollars in settlements against large corporations like BP. He owns hundreds of millions of dollars in real estate in the Houston area. Whatever his motivation was for taking these cases, it wasn’t because he’s in a financially precarious position.

  4. The press conference is intended to pressure the league into a longer suspension? The press conference is at 1:00 Thursday, the league has to have their appeal in by 9 a.m. Thursday. Do your homework.

  5. If the settlements are confidential there should be no press conference. Only fair that victims’ lawyers be allowed to speak publicly if Buzbee is allowed to speak publicly.

  6. Like a true coward he will say Watson has been through enough and he and the victims hope this can all be over. – Mark my words.

  7. This is why Rodger should have put him on the lid Commissioner’s exempt list as soon as he signed with the Browns. That way he could have kept him off the field for the year without the threat of it going to court.

  8. Mike: Two ideas I would love to hear you comment on:
    1. NFL appeals and adds a fine equal to 16.2M and suggests that is the “intent” of the 6 game suspension. Saves face, doesn’t stretch things out and is far more painful to Watson compared to more games or even a full season this year.
    2. NFL accepts result but since timeline of when suspension takes place NFL simply says it is the first 6 games of 2023 season. That way, no appeal and far more damaging to Watson financially. Certainly creates a challenge for NFLPA to appeal given their stance. Might be rules around this I don’t know about but Robinson decision doesn’t give a timeline, just amount of games.

Thanks for your hard work and explanation here! I don’t always love your Browns opinions but I am a homer so is what it is.

  9. What kind of ice cream?

There definitely should be a financial penalty levied. A fine. Equivalent to 23 games of 2023 salary. Then the league can put this whole embarrassing episode behind it. $25 million in addition to the 23 games he’ll miss? That will open up some eyes.

Which means by 0901, Buzbee will know if an appeal for an extension has been filed. That means the NFL really wants to hear what Watson’s accusers have to say publicly and gauge the reaction.

  11. Do you think he will disclose how he and McNair colluded to coerce DW to sign for 2021?

Pretty quick to point a finger aren’t ya? No one said that the Buzbee press conference has to be before the league appeal. I believe the point is that if the appeal isn’t “satisfactory”, it will become the main topic of discussion during the press conference to follow.

  13. Tony‘s last hurrah before everybody is moving on. He will say that the NFL should redo their CBA to protect possible future victims and punish the offender with nowadays standards. And if somebody else out there needs some help – better call Tony!

  14. If this was a Ravens player would the Browns fans still be supportive of this decision? Ask yourself that question before defending this predator.

  15. This guy is like a roach and will never go away. He craves the spotlight, otherwise he would not have settled now 53 out of 54 times (30 Texans and 23 Watson) if he was truly out for “justice”. If the NFL upholds 6 games or makes it 2 years, you think his message Thursday will really change? He’ll never be satisfied.

  16. I find it interesting that we haven’t heard a peep from Rusty Hardin. Has he just folded up his tents? I’d think he’d have SOME response to what’s happened.

  17. Dude is just trying to put more pressure on Watson to get more money for the last remaining lawsuit since once the NFL has levied their punishment a lot of of his leverage goes down. I will be glad when this issue is resolved so I don’t have to hear about this guy anymore and we can get back to actually talking about real football stuff.

  18. Fingers crossed that this whole thing is now over. Hoping TB doesn’t upset the applecart.(he will)

You DO know that the 9:00 a.m. deadline is simply for the NFL/Goodell to appeal the judge’s decision, right? Then the appeal goes to…wait for it…Goodell. He will then take a little bit of time before announcing a longer suspension.

Florio is right, Chief. Do YOUR homework.

  20. I’m not convinced all the women have come forward. It’s also possible Watson has committed more transgressions in the last year or so when this started. The guy clearly has major issues, and he may still have them. Buzzbee likely has more women ready to come forward and he’s waiting for just the right time to pounce.

  21. I fully expect him to next try to come after the NFL. If any of you bothered to read the cases Buzbee filed the last paragraph says that the NFL allowed all of this to happen laying the ground work for next filing suit against the NFL.

  22. I agree with the comment above. Buzbee got his money from Watson and the Texans. He wants the NFL’s money now and maybe even sue Nike after that for having their logo’s on an NFL uniform for not pulling their support from the league after that. Reading up about Buzbee the guy is a master of getting guilt money and extorting people and businesses by using negative media campaigns. Should probably be a politician.

  23. goodellisagoner says: Why will Solis be there? She settled, got her cash grab, now just move on.

Wow. Of all the women in this to talk smack about, Solis should be the last. She was “Jane Doe #1” and the first with the courage to confront this wealthy athlete. Shame on you.

  24. Buzbee must have his eye on some new shiny thing to purchase and needs to sue somebody else to come up with the money. Waiting until the NFL appeal deadline has passed he can announce he is suing the league for enabling the Texans, who enabled Watson. Settle and buy that shiny new toy.

The Better Call Saul references are pretty spot on when it comes to describing Buzbee.

I’ve never heard of a rich guy say he had enough money.

You know Buzbee is the plaintiffs lawyer, right?
