Tom Brady’s four-year run of being tampered with is a bad look for the GOAT

On one hand, tampering happens all the time in the NFL. On the other hand, quarterback Tom Brady has allowed himself to be tampered with brazenly and blatantly for four straight years.

As determined by the NFL, the Dolphins tampered with Brady in 2019. They tampered with Brady in 2020. They tampered with Brady in 2021. They tampered with Brady in 2022.

The ultimate source and cause of the tampering is Dolphins co-owner Bruce Beal. We flagged that relationship long ago. Consider this article from January 2020, regarding Brady possibly signing with the Dolphins: “Then there’s the Bruce Beal factor. The partner of Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has an option to buy the team whenever Ross decides to sell it. Some believe Ross may decide to sell much sooner than later, with Beal buying the team and selling a sliver of it to Brady.”

Beal and Brady are close friends. Beal was the primary conduit when the Dolphins tampered with Brady while he played for the Patriots.

And Beal could be the reason it all blew up. As one league source told PFT, Beal had been telling his friends in New York City for more than a year about his efforts to bring Brady to the Dolphins. At a time when plenty of teams aren’t discreet about tampering, Beal most definitely was not.

For Brady, there’s no violation of the rules. No player can be disciplined for being tampered with. But he can be criticized by fans and media for it.

Brady, while playing for the Patriots, was talking to the Dolphins about playing for them. Then, while playing for the Buccaneers, he was at it again.

Again, he’s not the first nor the last. It would be naive to assume, for example, that the Broncos didn’t engage in technically impermissible communications with Russell Wilson‘s agent before being authorized to speak to Wilson, and the Packers complained in 2021 (probably accurately) that teams were tampering with Aaron Rodgers.

Yes, tampering happens all the time. For Brady specifically, it literally has happened all the time.

And it wasn’t just the Dolphins who tampered with him. The Buccaneers did in 2020; coach Bruce Arians admitted interest in Brady at the Scouting Combine, while he was still under contract with the Patriots. Surely, other teams talked to him and to agent Don Yee at that same time.

It’s one thing to do it after a season has ended. Being tampered with has a different feel when it happens while football season is happening.

For some Buccaneers fans, the timing may not matter. They may feel betrayed and/or lied to by Brady, who (as we suggested at the time) wasn’t retiring from football but retiring from the Buccaneers. When his path to Miami imploded due to the Brian Flores lawsuit, Brady ultimately decided to return to the Bucs, whose head coach coincidentally (eye roll) decided to step down after Brady came back.

Along the way, there was at least circumstantial evidence of Brady possibly going to the 49ers for a year, from coach Kyle Shanahan skipping the Scouting Combine to Brady visiting his parents that week in San Mateo to the Niners hiring that week former Brady college teammate Brian Griese as the team’s new quarterbacks coach. (Brady’s first choice in 2020, as Chris Simms has said, was the 49ers. They opted to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo.)

The broader point is this. Fans wants players to put team before all else. Plenty of players don’t and won’t. For Brady, team is often a means to an end. And the end is the pursuit of his favorite Super Bowl ring.

Also known as, the next one.

  1. No one is going to care. Bucs fans got their ring and Pats got their 6. 10 years from now these tampering stories won’t be talked about. These tampering stories ruffle feather for about day then go away.

  2. The only people hurt by tampering are the owners of the team being tampered with. The rule is purely there to protect billionaires from each other.

  3. And he ain’t no GOAT. Joe Montana is the GOAT.

GOAT’s are admired by everyone and Brady is rightfully not. GOAT’s also don’t cheat, and GOATs aren’t 1-7 against the Manning brothers and Nick Foles in Super Bowls and conference championship games.

  4. Not really a fan of Brady. Respect what he’s done. He’ll get no criticism from me.

  5. Other than the draft, I’m all for players doing whatever they have to do, to orchestrate their careers. Then again i’m not a Patriots or Bucs fan so I’m not in position to be hurt personally.

  6. All Brady did in NE and Tampa is win. If any fan for either team is upset that he betrayed them by talking to people in his network about anything he wanted to talk about, they are completely wrong. There are basically no rules for players with regards to tampering. It’s up to the teams to police and prevent by not engaging. Brady did nothing wrong. For me this is a non-issue.

  7. If he doesn’t want to take their calls, he should throw his cell phone in the wood chipper.

    Again.

  8. Why is this all about Brady? He broke no rules. Maybe he listened to their pitch. Big deal. Happens all the time. Not only did the Dolphims cheat and get punished for it, but the owner fired a good FB coach for having the integrity to refuse to tank. Did I just wake up in bizarro world?

  9. They wouldn’t keep tampering with him if he wasn’t receptive… or perhaps even inviting it! He should not escape scrutiny, criticism and punishment for it!

  10. But but but it’s the GOAT……he walks on water and can turn any
    team into a SB winner.

  11. Anyone caught cheating does not belong in the HOF. this goes as well for the baseball players caught using steroids. Bradys been cheating since he came into the league. The Pays used the TB12 business of his to cheat the cap. None of thier rings won while he played are legitimate.

  12. Brady is the GOAT. He led the Pats to 6 championships while he was here. Was it pretty at the end? No. Are we as fans okay with the tampering thing? No. It happened and we can’t change it, no matter what. He deserves some sort of punishment, but it’s not happening, so we have to move on. He certainly has.

  13. Yeah, don’t care. The behind the scenes of the NFL is full of shady stuff like this. It’s only in the news now because of the names involved, and in 15 minutes there will be something else to distract us and make us forget all about this. And so it goes until the heat death of the universe.

  14. GOAT gave every team he ever played for everything he had and the proof is in the pudding. No Brady team EVER lost a playoff because he didn’t play great. Anyone surprised that other teams pursue him and that he’s willing to listen is naive. Doesn’t bother belichick because they’re after him too.

  15. Reading this, I think it would have been great to see him get a chance to Favre the Patriots.

That would have been highly amusing.

  16. And as far as us patriot fans, our team stunk before belichick and Brady and we’ll revert to the mean when belichick is gone. But damn it’s been great with him here!!

So does the league. Drama = $$$

  18. While a player can’t be punished for being contacted improperly, the NFL could require players to report tampering attempts to the League. In other words, no penalty for a team contacting you, big penalty for not reporting it.

It’s one of the many reasons why BB walked.

  20. Tampering goes on with all major free agent signings. Free market at its best. Teams want to know who is realistically available. Players want to know how much and is there a better offer.

  21. Coaches and players are tattered with every day. Every team does it. Just take away all 32 first round picks. Make it fair.

  22. IDC that TB12 was talking to others, but the Dolphins tampering with the Patriots in season–why is there not compensation for the Pats? That 1st round pick that the ‘fins lost should be the Patriots.

  23. The media cares about this far more than the fans do.

All of this was in the past….and I understand that it is still a slow time during football season.

  24. I really don’t understand why people want to apply rules of Congress to football. The more rules, the less fun.

  25. You mean Brady gets tampered with? I always assumed it would be Mitchell Trubisky. Nothing to see here

  26. If you had to deal with Bill for as long as I did you’d want to go to a division rival and kick his rear end too

  27. ESPN ran an article yesterday for the best offensive players all-time in their respective positions. Voting results: Brady earned 44 of 50 votes (88%). Montana did get 4 votes.

  28. Brady has been instigating contact with the dolphins for 4 years to satisfy his galactic sized ego. He knows his dad goodell will never dare dream of doing anything to him. He has been taking PEDs and HGH for years with zero drug tests. A true sham. Biggest fake asterisk fraud of all time and it isn’t close.

I haven’t seen him walk on water, but so far so good on the second point.

  31. I doubt it is a bad look for him, he cannot help it if someone approached him. Don’t hate, when you great at anything there will always be people approaching you with all kind of things.

  32. A few things:
He’s the GOAT, and not a bad guy.
The Pats are Mac’s team now.
We all have too much time on our hands.

  33. I dont get why Brady would look bad. After years of being tampered with, he still didnt sign with the Dolphins.

Belichick made it clear that he didnt want Brady back, and Brady didnt have to sign last years extension with the Bucs either.

  34. There’s a class of folks who think laws and rules are for suckers. You know them. TB is their exemplar.

  35. Pats fans should have an issue with him talking with the Dolphins and basically throwing away the 2019 season…

  36. Have to say that the NFL actually finding that Stephen Ross was able dream all this up is the most surprising thing to me

  37. Might be a better if he actually wound up going there, now it just makes Miami look stupid.

  38. Finally people are seeing what belichick had to deal with day in and day out with brady,he hasn’t been the team first guy for a long time that image is a smoke screen brady is all about brady.

  39. I’m not seeing the issue here– You sign ONE GUY, and he turns around your crappy franchise. Who isn’t gonna do that?

  40. on and off for four years at the tail end of a 22-year career. Eh. You fail to mention Peyton, but it’s the same thing.

  41. This guy is insufferable. Great player who, amazingly, gets stronger, faster and more agile every year he ages!!!

Great professionals look for situations where their goals align with their employer. That’s what Brady had for 20+ years. No great professional is a “team first guy” if the teams’ goals don’t align with their own. If you are an owner, that’s different. The team’s goals and your own goals are synonymous. Not so for an employee. Brady prioritized winning and so did the Patriots. However, Brady had the benefit of time when he was younger and could invest in Belichick’s plans. Now he can’t. He has to be in a position to win the Super Bowl each year he plays, or why bother playing.

I doubt the Patriots try, we saw what Kraft was all about when he not only didn’t appeal the the team punishments for deflategate he bent over and smooched Goodell’s ring.

Say what you want about the late Al Davis but this man was a fighter and wouldn’t bend the knee to the league.

The 2012 and 2015 teams lost, in Title game, because Brady didn’t play well.

2009, they got absolutely steamrolled in the Wild Card Round. Brady had a 49 rating.

He has had bad Playoff games, like every other great QB.

    I’d add 2005, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2019 and 2020 as seasons that ended primarily because Brady didn’t play great.

    2021 not 2020.

  48. BeliCHEP believers are funny, they ask Brady to respect a coach and (beliCHEAP) fans who didn’t appreciate at all what he did for them.

He took less money and it was all about him? Or it was beliCHEAP who was “all about him”?

When beliCHEAP is fully exposed, beliCHEAP believers will be seen as the most disgraceful fans. Enjoy when you still can.

  49. TDIM,

Did you notice that Brady played his worst between 2007 and 2012 when he had the best WR group in Pats?

The same for Joe Montana when he had Jerry Rice (never won a playoff game when opponent offense put on a fight)?

Anyone with open eyes can tell that Belidiot changed offense system in 2007, Walsh did the same with Jerry rice. Neither Walsh nor Belidiot invented any system, it was Joe Montana’s system in 49ers, it was Brady’s system in Pats, all the time.

  50. The same for Joe Montana when he had Jerry Rice (never won a playoff game when opponent offense put on a fight)?

  51. Denver was the #1 defense in 1989.. they were humiliated by Montana. Almost a perfect game.

And did you see the Montana-Rice stat line in that game?….

  52. The point of the article is that whatever you mean Belichick had to “put up with” is something other teams are even resorting to tampering to try and have a deal like that on their team to “put up with”.belichick had to put up with bradys ego and hunger for power that’s obvious to see look at brady he got everything from the bucs and hes still trying to make shady backroom deals. This is who brady is alot of us have known it for a long time wale up and smell the toast.

  53. As GMG pointed out, against lot lousy offenses, like Pats defense.
    ==========

55 points, 5 tds for Montana

Rice had 148 yards and 3 tds.. the Super Bowl the year prior; 215 yards

You said these two didn’t play well together?

  54. Belichick had to put up with Brady’s ego.

    ++++++++++

Lol, who had put up with whose ego? All your believe is based on the assumption that Belichick was the cornerstone of Patriots dynasty.

If in fact Brady was the cornerstone of Patriots dynasty, it would be Belichick’s stupidity and self-centered altitude that drove Brady out.

And we will see in next two seasons, and it is not under the control of Belichick believers.

  55. TLIM,

Did 49ers need Joe Montana to win THE SB, when opponents couldn’t score more than 10 points in all 3 playoff games?

Just like Belichick didn’t need Brady 2001, 2003-2004.

    Belichick didn’t need Brady, period.

Bill drafts Chad Pennington or Marc Bulger and the results would have been exactly the same.

I guarantee they wouldn’t cheat though like Tommy did.

Right as proven by BB making a special exception to his “get rid of good vets before they get expensive” rule for Brady.

Or Belichick’s being only 35-35 as Pats coach w/o Brady starting.

    Facts roll on.

  58. Who else could score 24 or more in back to back playoff without a top WR?

    Keep on moving the goalpost

  59. Or Belichick’s being only 35-35 as Pats coach w/o Brady starting.

I agree Belichick has a lot to prove. Benefited from a cheater playing QB as well as his team playing in by far the worst division in football over 20 years.

Now that the AFC Least is the East again and it seems he has a promising young QB who probably doesn’t need to cheat to be good let’s see what happens.

  60. TLIM,

    You didn’t answer the question.

BTW, Peyton and Rodgers were never able to do it in 3 consecutive playoff games.

  61. This guy is NO GOAT. A GOAT has integrity, moral compass and puts others first. This guy got caught cheating repeatedly and when he’s not, then he’s nothing special. Dude is a self absorbed poor representation of a role model, but its good to see the league still wont hold this guy to any ethical standards

  62. Will,

The next time you answer a question will be the first time.

  63. It has nothing to do with Brady!
    Ross is an idiot!
He had a plan Four years ago to tear the team down bring in young talent and add picks for a more competitive future. It was working so well Miami went into the off-season with more salary cap than any team after missing the playoffs by just one game. It was working so well that Miami was set up for a 2023 draft with 2 firsts, 1 second and 2 third round picks. Most owners would kill for the position Miami was in. But he has to keep touching the team when he k owes nothing about football. And every time he does, it’s a disaster.
His own plan was working just fine, but it wasn’t enough. Now he’s praying Tua gets it right because if he doesn’t Ross will never win a Super Bowl.
