Charvarius Ward: I feel like Trey Lance is about to show everybody what he’s capable of doing

49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward was a rookie when quarterback Patrick Mahomes took over as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback and threw for 50 touchdowns en route to an MVP award.

Ward then witnessed the quarterback’s progression over the last few years before signing a three-year deal with San Francisco in March.

So now Ward is in the Bay Area to see the rise of Trey Lance. In an interview with Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the cornerback noted it’s “unfair” to compare Lance with Mahomes at this point. But Ward has seen plenty of positive qualities out of San Francisco’s young QB.

“I feel like he’s about to show everybody what he’s capable of doing,” Ward said. “He’s got to work. He’s got to grow. All of us have to do that.

“I feel like Trey is going to be a great quarterback in the NFL. He’s got a good head on his shoulders. He’s confident in himself just like I’m confident in myself. And we all believe in him. We all trust in Trey.”

With Ward’s experiences in Kansas City, he likely has a good idea of what good quarterback looks like in practice. But Lance still has a lot to prove once the lights really come on in September.

  1. So much hype about this kid. With his elongated release and shaky O-Line he’s a prime candidate to break a finger (again) on a D Lineman’s helmet. We shall see.

  2. Shanahan’s system helps every QB from RG3 to Matt Ryan to Jimmy G. If he struggles then he is a bust.

  3. Think some of the 2nd year QBs people on this site love to troll – namely, Lance, Z. Wilson, and Fields – are gonna take big steps this year.

I hate the way the 49ers handled the Garoppolo situation but Lance has real upside. I’m done with all the talk so lets see it now.

  4. Everyone in the 9ers organization is talking this guy up like he’s the second coming of Joe Montana. If he doesn’t win league MVP this season, it will be considered a total failure.

  5. Reading between the lines – Not as good as Mahomes, inconsistent, but makes some splash plays in practice

  6. Off topic, Charvarious Ward’s story is quite remarkable. Was a likely camp cut with Dallas, before the CHiefs traded for him. Ward worked his way into a starting spot over a year. I have a lot of respect for people that work their way up and ear their reward.

  7. I kinda feel bad for the kid. It’s not his fault. When you have 2 borderline qualified people at GM and Coach trying to tell us a Div 2 qb who has to run to be effective at that level, will somehow translate into the NFL.

    It’s crazy.

  8. Love this time of year. So many people telling us how good they are and how great they’re gonna be this year… Come time to prove it real soon.

  9. I’ll believe it when I see it. If they cut/trade Jimmy and Trey busts the 9ers are screwed. I think they should hold onto Jimmy until at least the trade deadline, even with the cap hit.

  10. If what he is capable of doing is a positive Nick Bosa doesn’t agree with you. He’s on record telling Lance to just don’t screw it up. Hardly a voice of confidence.
