Geno Smith gets the start in the Seattle preseason opener

Geno Smith continues to lead the quarterback competition in Seattle. While he hasn’t won the job for Week One of the regular season, he’ll start the preseason opener on Saturday.

Via Michael-Shawn Dugar of TheAthletic.com, coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Tuesday that Smith remains in the lead for the full-time gig, and that he’ll get the nod at Pittsburgh this weekend.

Based on Saturday’s mock game, some thought Drew Lock had gained ground on Smith. That’s apparently not the case, at least not yet.

My own belief is that Carroll would love to beat former Seahawks starter Russell Wilson on the first Monday night of the season with his former understudy. Remember, Smith played well last year when pressed into service after Wilson suffered a finger injury against the Rams.

For the Seahawks, it’s been all about system, not star quarterback. Wilson had wanted the system to be all about him. The season begins with a compelling clash of philosophies, and Carroll is more likely to be proven right if Smith is the starter. He’s the next man up, replacing the man who wanted out and who finally got his wish.

  1. If Lock outplays Smith in the preseason, Lock will be the starter in week one. Forget the philosophies.

  2. Lock was the starter from point one. Lock will be the starter regardless of performances of the two in the preseason. The Seahawks KNOW that Geno Smith can’t do it. There is a small bit of doubt about whether Drew can do it. I am a Seahawks fan. I am rooting for Drew…but I am looking heavily at that Alabama quarterback. GO HAWKS!

5 worst teams in the league. Seattle, Bears, Texans, Jets, Falcons

    No Lions?

  4. Let’s face it. He’s not counting on Smith throwing much. He’s going to show how bludgeoning opponents with the run is effective. Smith will throw short passes to DK and Tyler and let them do their thing without taking big chances.

  5. I think Pete plays it safe like always- he’ll start Geno no matter if Lock out-plays him

  6. I just gotta keep telling myself that this season is all about getting a high 2023 draft pick…and every loss is actually a win.
