Jimmy Garoppolo shows up on 49ers’ first depth chart, as the fourth-stringer

Jimmy Garoppolo is on the team, but he’s not really on the team.

He’s on the team just enough to land on the mandatory preseason depth chart. And he’s buried as the fourth-string option.

Garoppolo is behind Trey Lance, Nate Sudfeld, and Brock Purdy. It’s surprising to even see Garoppolo on the depth chart at all, given that he’s basically using the workplace as a free gym membership.

Two weeks ago, the 49ers finally abandoned the ruse that Garoppolo potentially would be paid $25 million to remain on the team. They’re waiting for a starter with another franchise to be injured and potentially lost for the year or most of it.

The only question at this point, as raised Monday and discussed on Tuesday’s PFT Live, is whether the 49ers would carry Garoppolo on the roster after the reduction to 53 players on August 30. Since his $24.2 million base salary doesn’t become guaranteed unless he’s on the active roster as of 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 10, maybe they’ll keep him on the 53-man roster for 12 days, while they wait for an eleventh-hour trade opportunity to emerge.

  1. If Shanahan and Lynch cared about this guy like they’ve claimed they did all offseason, they would have traded him or cut him loose when he had a chance to land a starting job somewhere instead of holding out for the slim chance a starter gets hurt before the season. Either that, or there was little to no trade interest in Jimmy.

  2. Maybe I’m alone with this opinion but all this guy has done is lead this team in the playoffs and now they are letting him go for a FCS college QB??? I don’t get it.

  3. Not a good look at all. I’m old enough to remember when the 49ers used to be considered a classy organization.

  4. Jimmy doesn’t want to take part in QB meetings or team activities. That’s why he’s 4th on the depth chart. If Jimmy had am honest shot at competing for the QB1 spot he’d win it. At this point he’s the best QB on the team. Trey is a work in progress.

Why Robert Saleh doesn’t convince his GM to go after Jimmy is befuddling. His job depends on wins. Jimmy G will QB circles around Zach Wilson, and Jimmy G’s persona would be bigger than Broadway Joe Namath as QB of the Jets, these NFL front offices are a trip.

  5. Early preseason depth charts are pretty meaningless so if this was an isolated thing it wouldn’t be a big deal but it does seem like the 49ers are doing things like this out of spite at this point.

  6. This organization is a disaster. Cannot wait for Lance to crash and burn and leave egg all over Lynch’s face

  7. Rams win division, easily.
    Cardinals second and maybe playoffs.
Niners distant 3rd and painful qb play.
    Hawks not competitive.

Jimmy G blew the super bowl 2 years ago, had the worst performance I have seen in the modern era for a winning QB against GB in last year’s playoffs & then blew the NFL championship to the Rams. Jimmy G obviously isn’t the answer, especially for $25 million.

  9. They are trying to manage this to keep him off a team they will play and possibly make them look stupid. This is all CYA.

  10. Jimmy G blew the super bowl 2 years ago, had the worst performance I have seen in the modern era for a winning QB against GB in last year’s playoffs & then blew the **NFC** championship to the Rams. Jimmy G obviously isn’t the answer, especially for $25 million.

  11. Will be interesting to see. Spots on the 53 man roster are pretty valuable to tie one up for a player you are holding for an injury lottery.

  12. Clearly it’s Opposite Day in Clara’s Bizarro World….or is Opposite Day on a Groundhog Day loop?

  13. So the 49ers are comfortable with the unproven Trey Lance having as his backups: Nate Sudfeld, who has just 37 passing attempts in six years and is on his third team since Washington selected him in the sixth round of the 2016 draft; and Brock Purdy, a rookie out of Iowa who was selected with the final pick of the 2022 draft, saddling him forever with the moniker, “Mr. Irrelevant.”

    Good luck with all that.

  14. Maybe I’m not paying close enough attention to this team, but he has led them to one Superbowl and were extremely close to going again last year. Somehow this adds up to “must get rid of Garoppalo”. If they don’t own the div the next few years it sure looks like a mistake..

    Including the 49er’s current starter.

  16. What a crappy way to treat a guy who took you to the Super Bowl a few short years ago. Just pure disrespect. I get that he’s no longer “the guy”,but don’t treat him like this. I hope that Lynch and Shanahan fall flat on their faces, again.stay classy,SF

  17. Jimmy G is directly responsible for losing last years NFC title game to the Ram. Jimmy G is also directly responsible for losing the super bowl to the Chiefs a few years ago. Jimmy G should’ve been responsible for losing to the Packers in last year’s playoffs, but got saved by atrocious special teams play by GB. Plus Jimmy G has a long history of injuries. What has he done to be so well liked?

What? Jimmy G just received his medical clearance two weeks ago.

The QB choice and huge trade-up cost was due to Shanahan; Lynch was along for the ride. And Lance has yet to prove anything…

Kyle Shanahan has never won anything without Jimmy G as his QB.
    ====================================================================
I’m sorry, what exactly has Jimmy G won? Kyle Shanahan won a NFC championship without Jimmy G & he should have won the super bowl if Matt Ryan didn’t choke and allow a sack to get knocked out of field goal range. If the falcons score a field goal there, there is no way the Pats come all the way back to win in overtime.

  21. With Trubisky and Pickett really struggling in camp and Rudolph definitely not being the guy, the Steelers should really get this guy to make a run at the division.

Cincinnati will be hard to stop but I I think a Jimmy G led Steelers offense competes for that division title and will be far more balanced than the Ravens or Browns offenses.

  22. An NFL team is a weird place to be employed. You’re in the Super Bowl one year and the next year, you’re 4th string.

Jimmy G. would be an QB upgrade on at least 5 NFL teams.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

If we’re being real, Jimmy G at this current moment would probably be a QB upgrade on at least a dozen teams: ATL, SEA, PIT, HOU, MIA, CLE, CHI, CAR, JAX, NYG, NYJ, JAX, SF, WAS.

You can arguably include teams like NEP, NO, PHI on that list as well. That would be 17 teams where Jimmy could currently be an upgrade so over half the league!

You could even convince me on teams like IND, TEN where it is very close IMO.

  24. I don’t understand why they don’t just keep him as the second stringer, let him walk in free agency next season and get a good compensatory pick if they don’t like what they have been offered so far.

They’ve proven they can go pretty far with him (even if he doesn’t have a ton of upside, he’s still a very solid player when healthy), so if Lance gets injured, their season isn’t lost.

The only reason I can think of to force the issue now is if they really need his cap space for a Bosa extension, which wouldn’t be unreasonable. In theory, I guess they might be afraid of the Foles-Wentz problem, but I think people have already seen what Jimmy G. can do and understand wanting to upgrade regardless of what would happen this year.

  25. didn’t Shanahan sign a big multi-year contract that tied him up until 2025, or something like that? he’s probably only got a couple of years left on it now and he still hasn’t won anything… he’s the one who’s really under pressure, not Trey Lance.
If I was Shanahan I think I would rather take my chances with Jimmy G who I know for a fact can get me to a Superbowl (once, and nearly twice), than an unproven Trey Lance

  26. This is total bs. All this boils down to is an incompetent coach and GM. All QB’s are injury prone. If they weren’t that would mean they weren’t doing their job properly as QB’s. In Jimmy’s case, I’m guessing that there is a ton of jealousy because he is so good looking. They can’t have a QB that distracts the fans away from the disaster of the coach’s mistakes. They are showing him nothing but disrespect I wouldn’t want to participate in anything either especially after they told me I didn’t have to. This organization used to stand for class now it’s just a circus. Sad, just sad.

  27. Poor Jimmy and after all the things he did for the niner’s. Wasn’t his fault that great d they put together all fell apart at the same time he got there. Or that the Niners have Lynch who sucks as a GM and has ruined this team over the years with bum trades and picks.
Jimmy will land somewhere and get his shots.

Make it six. He’d be an upgrade over the 3 above him on the Niners.

Your post doesnt make any sense, do you think they didnt try to trade Jimmy G during the offseason? He was injured and no one wanted him it’s not that they didnt want to trade him when he had a chance to land a starting job. 2nd Liking someone doesnt mean you have to make a dumb business decision. Afterall Jimmy G isnt some long time san fran folk hero BUT even if he was the Favre saga showed that doesnt matter to an organization

  30. The fact that Jimmy has been silent tells me that he and Shanahan have come to terms. The Niners are NOT screwing Jimmy G.

I’m sure that Jimmy G would rather be traded to a team of his choice, thus keeping his big salary, then to be cut…allowing other teams to lowball him.

  31. This has to taken up in future CBA discussions. They don’t want fully guaranteed contracts. Yet, they are sitting on him when the remainder of his contract is non guaranteed. Either pay him or give him an opportunity somewhere else.

  32. “he’s probably only got a couple of years left on it now and he still hasn’t won anything…”

Seriously? One trip to a superboowl and another NFC Title game, in the last 3 years, is better than most of the other teams in the league.

  33. Me thinks the Steelers should make a move to get Jimmy G. Trubiski stinks, so does Rudolph.

  34. Tha Nino Man says:
This has to taken up in future CBA discussions.
    ==

They can take up this issue just as soon as the NFLPA agrees to eliminate the loophole that allows players under contract to show up to camp to avoid being fined, while still refusing to practice or play (holding in).
Truth is, both owners AND players are always looking for ways to get around rules and regulations for their own selfish interests. It’s not a new thing, and it flows both ways.
Neither side is in a position to play the holier-than-thou or victim cards.

  35. Well he’s still on the team. What else are they gonna do? They’re just going to keep waiting until someone is desperate enough to trade for him. Personally I don’t see why anyone thinks he has value, or will. If you’re looking for someone to hand the ball off and get hurt, there are many cheaper options available

  36. The 49ers are putting all of their eggs in one basket,so to speak. What if Trey Lance gets hurt,or doesn’t handle the starting job well? Can they count on Sudfeld or Purdy to take over? I doubt it. Jimmy G should be the backup.

  37. The 49ers used approximately 30 yards of the field, almost exclusively within the numbers, each first down with Jimmy G at QB, with Lance, they will change that to using the entire field.

  38. JG got the operation reducing the value the 49ers could get in a trade. They are letting him sit to reduce the value he will get on the open market. Never mind the nice things being said. Its payback.

  39. The team with the injured QB is going to be the 9ers, cause their idiot Coach is playing Boy Wonder in Pre Season. He’s done such a fantastic job in camp that he’s earned a spot on the practice squad.

  40. So if I understand this…Lynch and Shanahan concluded that Garoppolo was finished for not winning a playoff game and the Superbowl…can we assume then that since Lynch and Shanahan failed to win either the playoff game or the Superbowl that they are finished as well…time to move on.
