New Bronco CEO Greg Penner is mum on Russell Wilson contract

Earlier this year, the Broncos traded for quarterback Russell Wilson. Unlike Deshaun Watson, Wilson didn’t get a new contract in his way through the door.

On Thursday, new CEO Greg Penner (son-in-law of primary owner Rob Walton) was asked about plans for a long-term deal with Wilson.

“First of all, we couldn’t have been more excited as we were going through the process to see that the organization had made the trade for Russell,” Penner told reporters. “It’s critical to have a great quarterback in this league and coming in this organization with Russell in place is a tremendous benefit for us. On our first diligence trip in May here, one of the first people we ran into the hallway when Rob [Walton], Carrie [Walton Penner], and I were here was Russell. Right away, we got a sense of how positive he is as a leader. He is just such a dynamic individual. I can’t wait to see him on the field. I don’t know how much we will see of him on the field on Saturday, but we are looking forward to it. At this point, nothing to say about his contract.”

Wilson has two years left on his existing contract. He typically gets a new deal with one season remaining.

The Broncos, by giving up so much to get him, obviously have welcomed the reality of giving him a major deal. The biggest question is whether he’ll squeeze a fully-guaranteed deal from an ownership that can sneeze $200 million or so into escrow, for the purposes of complying with the league’s outdated funding rule.

But here’s the bottom line. The longer they wait, the more expensive it will be to sign him. The cap keeps going up. The market keeps going up. And Wilson’s price will keep going up.

  1. But his age is also going up. See how he does this year and address at the end of the year along with everyone else.

  2. And rightly so! Wilson has not played a singe regular season game. He’s been paid much for his past and potential, and has much to prove. PS I’m a Broncos fan and am cautiously optimistic.

  3. He just got there today. Chill out. It’ll all be ok. You guys are more worried that Wilson is.

  4. They gave up so much draft capital to get him, there is no way there not going to sign him to an extension, and his agent knows that

  5. He hasn’t outplayed his current deal, if Russ is smart, and I think he is, let it fly this year, make the playoffs, the make the cheddar.

  6. Now that Wilson is working for Walmart… He should slash his low everyday prices… Or whatever the motto is.

9 Pro Bowl selections out of the last 10 seasons. So much to prove. Right?

  8. Even the old, angry Aaron Rogers thinks you need to R-E-L-A-X. It will get done when they want it to, zero drama here.

  9. Seeing as how Denver never seems to draft correctly at QB since Elway it might bode well to extend Wilson next year.

  10. I hope Russ gets some social equity written in his contract because that 25 mil house will be tough sledding for the average person in pursuit of justice.

  11. Russ said he wants to own an NFL franchise some day (lol), so he’s gonna want to capitalize now while he’s still in his prime.

  12. I wonder if RW’s accuracy will be affected after having those pins put in place last year. When he did come back last year he had a ton of balls sail on him.

Good lord, he’s been the owner for less than 24 hours, give it a rest.

Exactly, The guy hasn’t even warmed the chair in his new office yet.

  14. The Broncos hype is all hype so far. Yeah he’s an obvious upgrade in one of their most needed positions, but let’s see them win first okay guys!

  15. Let him play the season out and see how well he plays, then give him a contract. No rush.
