Tua Tagovailoa still doesn’t realize the Dolphins were trying to get Tom Brady for 2022

Last week, after the NFL found that the Dolphins had rampantly tampered with Sean Payton and Tom Brady, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa expressed (or maybe feigned) ignorance as to the fact that the team tried to get Brady not just before Tua arrived, but after.

On Wednesday, the issue came up again. And Tua continued to insist that the effort to get Brady happened before the Dolphins drafted Tagovailoa.

“I think they were doing that in 2019, but then I came in 2020,” Tua said Wednesday. “I mean, they picked me.”

Wednesday’s back and forth included an effort to get Tua to realize that the Dolphins tried to do it even after picking him.

“Yeah, I mean, I’m still here,” Tagovailoa said. “To me, that’s all noise at this point.”

It may be noise, but it’s also one of the express findings the NFL made nine days ago, when announcing the punishments imposed on the Dolphins for tampering with Payton and Brady. Here’s the exact quote from the release: “The Dolphins again had impermissible communications with both Mr. Brady and his agent during and after the 2021 season, while he was under contract to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Those discussions began no later than early December 2021 and focused on Mr. Brady becoming a limited partner in the Dolphins and possibly serving as a football executive, although at times they also included the possibility of his playing for the Dolphins.” (Emphasis added.)

Maybe Tua knows the truth and he’s pushing alternative facts as a defense mechanism. Or maybe he simply doesn’t realize that the Dolphins did indeed try to get Brady during and after the 2021 season — after they abandoned their quest to get Deshaun Watson.

And it’s definitely an issue. Tua, we’d heard from multiple source last year, was not happy with the Deshaun dalliance. Tagovailoa, as we were told last year, declined to serve as a team captain because of the persistent sense at the outset of the season that a trade for Deshaun Watson was imminent, and that Tua couldn’t and wouldn’t serve a the captain of a team that didn’t want him.

Although Brady’s arrive isn’t imminent (indeed, it now may never happen at all), the situation underscores something receiver Tyreek Hill said earlier this summer. “You know, in the NFL they only give you like two or three years to be a successful quarterback, especially if you’re a first-round draft pick,” Hill declared on his podcast. “And if you don’t succeed after those years, then it’s kick rocks, man. So, basically, they’re going to put Tua into that. So this is basically his last year, man, just to show people what he’s got.”

Deshaun Watson. Tom Brady. Lamar Jackson. Whoever. If the current starter doesn’t get it done in 2022, the next quarterback of the Dolphins will be someone other than Tua Tagovailoa.

  1. Or maybe he knows there’s nothing he can do about it and chooses not to engage the media about it?

  2. As a fins fan they never should have picked him in the 1st place. hvae no idea what they saw in him over other qb’s in that draft. Also, they played him too early his rookie yr, should have left Fitz in for the season, make the playoffs, reignite the fan base, then start tua after he really learned the playbook and how to be an nfl qb.

  3. Yeah, he knows, he just doesn’t want to deal with the circus associated with engaging in the conversation about it.

  4. “Tua Tagovailoa still doesn’t realize the Dolphins were trying to get Tom Brady for 2022″… Yes he does, he’s just downplaying it. He has no choice, its all he can do in his situation. Don’t blame the guy.

  5. Look at that schedule. Tick tock for Tua….

Cannot be made up. It just can’t. How Grier surivives all this, I’ll never understand.

  6. Brady must really be trying to stick it to Belichick and Kraft by signing with an arch rival. Most Pats fans think he’s a traitor

  7. BY acting like he doesn’t realize that the Dolphins were trying to get Brady, Tua is making this nonsense last even longer.

All Tua needs to do is say, yeah….I know, but we’re past that and we have a season to prepare for. Next question.

  8. In other words, Tua is smarter than the media and refuses to give the media ammo to use against him in the future.

  9. I remain eternally grateful to the Dolphins for picking Tua and allowing Justin Herbert to fall to the Chargers.

  10. Hate Tua all you want, he’s the 2nd best quarterback in the division. Mac Jones is bland and Zach Wilson would rather date older women than try to be a good qb

  11. …and he doesn’t care. It’s his team to lose, and by the look of things, that’s not happening any time soon. Miami is gonna raise eyebrows this season.

  12. It’s the NFL. Every team is constantly thinking of upgrading every position. It’s a competition at all times.

Players can be upset about it, but it’s just a reality. There are 32 highly coveted starting QB jobs. Someone is trying to take your job at all times. For most high level athletes, that has been the case since they were kids.

  13. Tua went on to say that Coach was discussing letting him visit his Uncle’s farm, where there was plenty of room to run free and lots of other QB’s to play with.

  14. I don’t get why the Dolohins drafted a guy that could clearly not make all the throws needed in the NFL.

  15. If they had redshirted Tua in 2020 and let him start completely healthy with a full offseason then this would be his second year and all the talking heads would be comparing him to Zach Wilson and saying he looks great.

But the Dolphins mis-manage everything so that was never going to happen.

Probably this year the Oline will fall apart for the 20th year in a row and Tua will fail. But the fans who think things would be different if the Dolphins drafted Herbert really don’t understand what’s wrong with the Dolphins.

Tua proved he belongs in the NFL if he can stay healthy. He can win games. I think his ceiling is like a Tannehill level.

Jury is still out on Mac and Wilson. Mac obviously looked like the better of the two in year 1 in terms of reading the game. Wilson looked lost despite his elite physical skills.

As a Patriots fan we don’t know what we have with Mac yet, but so far so good. Couldn’t have asked for much more from his rookie season despite the disappointing ending. However, lots of guys have looked good in year 1 and ended up not becoming a long term starter in the league. We will see over the next year or two.

Mac Jones is bland? He put up similar averages per game as Tua, but Jones played in all 17 games. Tua didn’t. Tua also has had a yet head start in regards to the playbook, but isn’t any better than Jones. Bland Jones has been to the Pro Bowl and the playoffs. Tua?

  18. Nobody in the public really knows what happened or who was responsible or how far it went. All we know is that Ross and Beale were the ones who tampered. We don’t know if they really tried to get Brady to play or just wanted him on the ownership team. We don’t know if Grier was involved which I would think is very unlikely. Ross has been going around his executives since he tried to recruit Jim Harbaugh. I wouldn’t be surprised if Grier was the one who talked some sense into Ross regarding Watson. Tua is right to blow it off and ignore it.

  19. All Tua has done is win so can we just fire the coach already and start over again for the 11th time since Shula

  20. Oh, I think he realizes it, all right. He may put on a brave face when asked about these things, but after the interviews, he goes home, buries his face in a pillow and cries himself to sleep.

  21. Dolphins picked Tua over Herbert just 15 years after going with Culpepper over Brees. Yikes

Or he could answer not like an idiot. Listen to Belichick for 10 minutes, and you have your answer to this question. Something along the lines of “I’m not going to get into any thing I cant control, I’m just focused on 2022, and being the best QB I can be for the Miami Dolphins”. Done.

  23. I gotta think there are several teams out there that would bring in and start Brady over the current guy if they had that chance.

  24. I cannot wait until the season begins. All of this speculation is pointless. I just want to see the games play out.

  25. What was the goal of that segment of the presser – to humiliate the kid, to make him doubt himself? These games of “gotcha” are one reason that the press is held in low regard by many of us. Go Tua Tagovailoa, Roll Tide, Go Dolphins!!!

  26. I want to see Tua succeed this year for a number of reasons, but the biggest reason I want to see him succeed is to see how many of his detractors will actually man up and admit they were wrong about him all along. My guess is not many if any. Much easier to sit there and trash the guy.

  27. I think if Tua ever find success in the NFL it will be with another team. The Dolphins have done everything they can to destroy his confidence.

Are you serious???? What SB championship is Tua on now? Going for a third Super Bowl?

  29. You draft a QB give him 3 years and he doesn’t cut it. You draft another QB and give him 3 years and he doesn’t cut it. Just how many decades do you want to spend trying to find a QB? Heck Baker Mayfield would have been a better option than Tua. The Dolphins are the AFC South Browns.

  30. Bottom Line: this Kid is unbelievably mature and level headed. No player has to put up with more crap from the media than him. FACTS: He was a better QB in college than Herbert. Herbert went to the 8th ranked Offense and Tua off serious injury and multiple coaching changes went to the 31st ranked OLine and 27 ranked Offense. Guess who has a better record in the NFL. I rest my case.

So bringing multiple championships to the Pats while BB got most of the credit over such a long career and then moving on to win another proving so far that BB is the most over rated coach in history is Brady’s fault? Pats fans are still stuck up BB behind as he falls to the wayside with his poor decision making. Pats fans owe him for every win they managed to get and a decade of great play. BTW. I am not a Brady fan or a Pats fan but common sense has to win out.

Facts is Tua had a much better team and coaching in college than Herbert. Major fact is Herbert is twice the QB Tua is in the NFL where it counts. Tua is a major reason his O-line is ranked low. He does not read the defense quick enough and holds the ball to long. Fact is Tua is too small, too weak of an arm and to slow processing the field. Tua is a bust. I rest my case… which has actual facts that matter more than being the best college QB.

Yes they will… as people roll their eyes upwards wondering just what are the Dolphins doing and why can’t they do anything right. Not Tua’s fault that he was way over drafted and not nearly as good as they expected. I am sure he is doing the best he can do on his way to being a backup somewhere.
