Someone is calling teams on behalf of Roquan Smith to solicit trade interest

An awkward situation between the Bears and linebacker Roquan Smith could soon be getting even more awkward.

Per a league source, a person purporting to represent Smith has been calling other teams in order to gauge potential trade interest.

It’s a problem for two reasons. First, the person isn’t an NFLPA-certified agent. He can’t represent Smith or any other player. Second, Smith has not received permission to seek a trade.

Basically, the person is setting up a potential tampering trap for any team that either engages in conversations regarding Smith or fails to promptly notify the Bears of the impermissible contact.

It’s unclear whether Smith would have any problems for attempting to instigate tampering. But this is far different than a team reaching out to a player or his agent. This is a player, who isn’t represented, trying to generate trade interest at a time when his current team has not authorized trade talks.

Smith, who ostensibly represents himself (but apparently doesn’t), has been present for training camp but not practicing. He wants a new contract to replace his fifth-year option. Earlier this week, he publicly requested a trade.

  1. Representing yourself is fine, but you can’t have it both ways. Having a friend call around for you is just dumb.

  2. This is 100% due to the fact Roquan does not have an agent. It’s at the point where I would blacklist players without agents if I ran a team. I love Roquan, but it’s impossible to negotiate with a guy who doesn’t understand the market or financial details and takes everything personally. For that reason alone, I would trade him.

Meet his friend, his name is Roquan Smith.

  4. Say what you want about agents but for someone with Roquan’s earning power to be representing himself is sheer idiocy. He’s making these negotiations into a personal thing (never a good idea especially when the guy across from you didn’t draft you) and potentially leaving millions on the table.

  5. He’s unlicensed. He’ll probably be arrested if doesn’t stop. Not asking for this outcome, there’s a reason you have to be licensed to solicit like this.

  6. Mr. Smith, just pay an agent please. You are still an extremely marketable commodity at this point. It’s not too late to extricate yourself from what has rapidly deteriorated into a huge mess.

  7. Hello, we’ve been trying to reach you about your car’s extended warranty and Roquan Smith….

  8. He lost his playbook-tablet as a rookie and then held out. Not smart.

Good riddance. Lb is not a 20m per year position.

  9. Roquan may very well be a top linebacker,… but apparently not very smart. That’s precipitating tampering. He could / should be suspended and fined.

  10. Hire an agent who will get you paid or get you traded so you can get paid. Stop with the cheap thinking

  11. Someone has to be giving him terrible advice, like a relative or someone. This is idiotic. He’s not only hurting himself in negotiations, he’s now killing his own trade market.

  12. Sit on his rights and make him honor the contract he signed. Then pick the worst team possible and dump him at the last minute.

Does anyone know if he hangs out with Antonio Brown?

  14. I hope this isn’t true. If it is. Ro’s been a very silly boy. Did no-one tell him you don’t catch flies with vinegar? Poles looks like a man you don’t mess about with – and he’ll know more moves than Roquan ever will. Ro’s about to be taken to school!

  15. I’m a Bears fan, and this doesn’t surprise me at all. Very good player, but a bit of a head case. Rumor is he wants more than Leonard, so if that’s true, he’s DEFINITELY a head case.

  16. Probably was Tyrek’s agent after he told him he could get him the biggest contract in the history of the NFL….if you don’t mind playing for the Jets or the Seahawks.

  17. Bears & Ryan Poles hold all the cards on this one. Roquan should have retained an agent who would have informed him that Bears have to approve any trade request. He and his “friend” are tampering by calling around. He’s not worth $20M per season, so he better suit up, start practicing. and try to mend this fence. He miscalculated this entire outcome….

  18. I haven’t looked into this but it seems players that represent themselves do better for themselves signing short contracts. 1-2 years tops. Suh comes to mind. I think he’s going to struggle to get a long term contract on his own.
