Lamar Jackson sets Week One deadline for new contract

As the calendar hits mid-August, the Ravens and quarterback Lamar Jackson have not agreed to a contract extension.

Head coach John Harbaugh said late last month that both sides are “very motivated” to get a deal done and Jackson has said he’d like to have the extension in place before the regular season.

But on Saturday, Jackson — who is representing himself in the negotiations — said he has a hard deadline of Week One.

“Yeah, we’re coming up to it,” Jackson said in his press conference. “It’s coming up. The season’s coming up. We’re going to be good for the season.”

When asked if that meant his hard deadline is Week One, Jackson replied, “Yeah, for sure.”

But Jackson also said he had “no updates” on the negotiation process.

If Jackson and the Ravens can’t come to terms on a new deal, then Jackson would be slated to hit free agency next March. Of course, Baltimore and Jackson can hit the negotiating table again after the season’s over. And the Ravens would be able to franchise tag Jackson to keep him from hitting the open market.

The 2019 MVP, Jackson is slated to make $23 million this season on his fifth-year option.

  1. Come on Baltimore, have some backbone. Call his bluff.

You’re still a threat to make the playoffs with Huntley.

  2. It is a damn shame the Ravens won’t pay this man. He is undoubtedly one of the top running backs in the NFL.

  3. Here’s the Ravens plan. They’re a very bright team. 1) Let Lamar play this season on current contract 2) give him a qualifying franchise tag next offseason 3) if someone then offers him a contract and Ravens don’t (purposefully) match, Ravens get 1st round picks in ’23 an ’24. These 2 first rounders plus the one they already own would allow them to move up (very high) in round 1 of the ’23 draft to grab a QB (’23 draft is going to have 5-7 very highly rated QBs coming out) 4) the Raven’s back-up is marginally not that far off from Lamar as it is, paying Lamar $200M guaranteed is simply not smart. My two favorite players in the league on offense are Lamar and Deebo…but Lamar is not a long term QB…he’s simply not accurate enough in general and specifically in the 25 yd red zone when windows are very very tight and only open for partial seconds. Once his legs go, he’s done as a QB..as much as I like him, it’s just the truth. Ravens not going to sign him, watch. Not a Ravens fan, but they are a great franchise…treat players well, but they are not stupid…giving Lamar a long term contract when we’re already seeing some leg wear and tare, Ravens won’t be foolish and cave to media/public pressure.

  4. I have no idea what his trade value would be. Personally, with his current salary, free agent status, and somewhat predictable skillset, I’m not sure the Ravens could lure a first-round pick.

  5. Why waste your money Baltimore? The guy will never do anything against playoff defenses.

  6. Seems like he’s dragging it out in hopes of another market setting deal. If he doesn’t show significant progress to be an NFL level passer this year, they should let him go or franchise tag him once or twice to buy some time looking for his replacement.

  7. Or what? You’ll leave in FA for another team whose entire offensive game plan is centered around their “running” QB. What other 31 teams do that? Until the Ravens get rid of Roman and this current mindset it’s gonna be wash/rinse/ repeat. It’s a passing league driven by passing QBs.

  8. Tyler Huntley is more than capable of running the ravens offense thats why the ravens aren’t being desperate and giving him 200 mill fully guaranteed if lamar went to another team he would not be close to who he is in baltimore, his best bet is to remain in bmore where they made the system specifically for him he knows that I respect him betting on himself like Flacco did n hope he proves he’s worth 200 mill guaranteed but he’s at risk of losing millions if he has another down yr or gets injured I understand he wants to be paid and he deserves to be but I’m sure he knows baltimore is the best place for him to remain

  9. Please give him a big contract…..signed all AFC teams.
Chokes in crunch time….regular season champ.

  10. Lamar Jackson covers up a lot of holes on this roster. Ozzie Newsome is not the GM anymore. The price will always go up if he maintains his current level of play and if he doesn’t they have shown that they can get out of a bad QB contract. See Flacco, Joe

Threat to make the playoffs? Really? I thought the objective was to win the SB. Lamar was in first place in his division when he was injured and Huntley only needed to win one more game to make the playoffs. He couldn’t get it done. Please stop with the little engine that could Huntley crap. That’s like that Dalton, Prescott nonsense from a couple years ago. Lamar will get 50 mil a year, 200 mil guaranteed and he has all the leverage. You can’t deny an MVP pro bowler who puts you in the playoffs every year. Mahomes is the only big money QB who has accomplished more. Haters gonna be so upset like it’s their money, can’t wait.

  12. I don’t like Jackson, but his team haswon75% of their ganes with him under center. I think that the only big question mark is how long can a running QB last in the NFL?

  13. I say don’t pay him. Make him win meaningful games. Otherwise Huntley truth be told is not that much of a drop off and significantly less hit on salary cap that can be used on other players.

  14. Lamar really should become a running back or receiver. Look at Julian Edelman and Hines Ward. Some quarterbacks went on to have successful playing careers at another position.

  15. I have no idea what he is asking for, or what he’s been offered. Normally in a contract negotiation, we often have hints like, guaranteed money, length of the contract, yearly amount. But here, it’s a complete mystery to me.

  16. To all the Einstein’s above, name me 1 running back in the league that could do what he does under center. See how dumb you sound?

What has Lamar possibly shown in his postseason play to suggest he will ever take a team to a a win a SB?

  18. He is a really good player. Of that there is no doubt. But he has never lead his team to a 4-12 record and never assaulted enough women to earn Watson money.

  19. With a good season, Lamar could end up with a contract making him the highest paid QB in the league. No rush to sign an unacceptable deal.

If the objective is to win the SB, then a guy who’s only won one playoff game in 4 years may not be the best way. He’s 1-3 in the playoffs, with a 56% completion rate and 3 TDs to 5 interceptions, and only 54 yards rushing in those 4 games.

I think Jackson is talented enough for them to stick with and give a contract to. But there are lots of QBs who have accomplished more. Allen has already won two more playoff games and been to six of them. Burrow has already made it to the Super Bowl. And of course, other big-money guys like Wilson, Rodgers and Brady have won Super Bowls. Heck, Garoppolo has won 3 more playoff games than Jackson and has been to the Super Bowl.

Bottom line, Jackson has been MIA from postseason success and other guys are passing him by.

  21. With most of his peers already getting new deals it’s looking like he and the team have vastly different opinions on his worth. I bet this goes the franchise route next year. If so it makes me wonder if they truly view him as the long term answer at QB.

Here comes the hate for Lamar, who has a 37-12 record as a starting quarterback
    —————————————————————-
Using your thinking: Barry Sanders was a horrible running back because he had a 74-79 record.

I want some of whatever you’re on. First off he’s a legendary playoff choke artist. He’s surrounded by an offense built specifically for him, has a great defense, lots of weapons, and still can’t win playoff games. He has been playing far from his MVP season level, and even that was because he ran for 42,000 yards, had nothing to do with his passing ability. Let’s say God forbid, he breaks his leg tomorrow, and the doctors tell him he can still play, but he’ll never be a running qb again, what then? Would you still give him 50 million if he has to be a pocket passer? Heck no, because he’s not a very good quarterback, he’s an average quarterback with exceptional running ability, basically what NFL scouts thought he was. If you’re gonna spend that kind of money on a quarterback, he needs to be able to beat you with his arm. This isn’t about people being haters, they’re giving a realistic breakdown of his skill set.

And still really hasn’t, Mr Stacked-Team-Brady, himself. Ryan, I think an MVP trophy trumps being a SB loser. Rodgers, oh that disappointment? Wilson, who road the back of his defense? How many years have they been in the NFL? Pay Lamar the max $$ he deserves because he is the team much like Manning was with the Colts. They are asked to do way more than the average QB.

How many playoff games did Mathew Stafford win before winning the Super Bowl? All of this talk about playoff records is meaningless. It’s a team game. Winning the Super Bowl requires more than just a hot QB. The last time the Ravens won a Super Bowl they were lead by their defense and Ray Rice (who couldn’t find his white suit covered in blood stains).

I’m not a Ravens fan, but who does Jackson have to throw to?

  26. All these ppl saying “let him walk and roll with Huntley” don’t realize Huntley went like 1-5, when Lamar had the Ravens at 8-4 and the #1 seed when he got hurt. 😂 🤦🏽‍♂️

  27. Easy call. Move on to Huntley. Spend money on the rest of the team and get a couple of first round picks.

I feel like I’m listening to Republicans. Nothing they say makes any sense these days. You gonna take 1-4 guy over an MVP who has has the most wins of any player before the age of 25. Newsflash, people, no one wants to see Huntley from the stands or from your living room. Lamar is box office and puts money in the NFL’s and Ravens’ pockets. It’s much more than playoff records, which is your only sad argument that seems to really only apply to Lamar. You’re not getting nationally televised games with Huntley at the helm.

  29. Let him play on this contract and then see if he deserves it..if not tag him..then when someone overreaches take that deal get the picks and move on.

  30. Lamar Jackson, please hire an agent. You are leaving $100 bills on the table to pick up loose change on the floor.

Really, dude? Throwaway millions of QB money to play RB? First of all, Lamar would suck at RB. Never played the position at any level and he is terrible on QB designed running plays. Have you seen Ravens games? They don’t work. Lamar is a great second level runner, but you got to get there first. He gets good runs from broken plays out of the QB position. You don’t get a broken play out of a RB set, big difference. Lamar would literally be out of the league, if he were a RB. Case closed on that nonsense.

  32. I do not want the Ravens and Lamar to reach a contract agreement. However, it is not because I do not believe in Lamar. I really want to see him go the Kirk Cousins route. It’s risky, but if he stays healthy he gets to write his own ticket. Play out his rookie contract, Ravens franchise him twice and then he hits free agency. I want to see it.

They are asked to do way more than the average QB.////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Brady’s teams weren’t stacked in New England. Ryan also has an MVP, Rogers is one of the greatest qb’s of all time with a Super Bowl ring, Stafford consistently throws for 5k yards on garbage team. What exactly has Jackson done beyond his MVP that he earned with his legs? And the Ravens are stacked, so that he is the team stuff is complete nonsense. Yes, pay him what he’s worth by all means, but it ain’t 50 million, and that’s certain. They’re not draggin their feet on this contract for fun, they don’t want to pay him that much.

  34. As somebody else wrote, Or what?

So if there isn’t a deal by week 1, what’s he going to do? Sit out the season? Refuse any further Ravens offers, no matter how lucrative? My guess is that if the “deadline” passes he’ll sign a deal a week or two into the season. In other words, this statement will be proven meaningless, like everything else said by either side before the pen hits the paper.

However, it’s not impossible that he means he’ll take whatever offer on the table at 11:59 PM of the last day. Far-fetched, perhaps; dumb, certainly; but you just can’t predict what his inexperienced, untrained agent might do.

  35. Where is the $200 million guaranteed coming from. The Ravens are not the Browns and don’t need to do what only the Browns are dumb enough to do. Lamar is over playing his hand because he’s representing himself and can’t read the situation properly.

  36. My sources tell me he’s staging a hold in- he’s refusing to throw a forward pass until a contract is signed.

  37. The Ravens don’t care. As long as he performs in the pre-season they feel like they’ve won the Super Bowl every year.

  38. I don’t care. Not my money. Putting money aside, I really don’t think he’s that good.

  39. This is why BB is such a genius. You never have to PAY a franchise QB if you never have a franchise QB TO pay!

  40. Lamar, if they have not got your contract done by the time season starts. Don’t play.

  41. I can understand the reservations the Ravens may have. The average career of an NFL running back is only 3-4 years.
