Matt LaFleur defends Jordan Love after up-and-down performance

Packers quarterback Jordan Love, the 2020 first-round pick who has spent most of his career on the sideline watching Aaron Rodgers, played the first half of Friday’s preseason game. He had some bright moments, but also too many inaccurate throws, and didn’t look the way most coaches would want a first-round quarterback to look at the start of Year 3.

Despite that, Packers coach Matt LaFleur defended Love, saying that two of his three interceptions were not his fault.

“I think two of those you can totally take off him,” LaFleur said. “The third one, we had two busted routes because the ball really shouldn’t have gone there on that play, but he had nowhere else to go with the football, and he forced it in there and the defender made a good play. We’ve just got to clean up everything around him. We say it all the time about quarterbacks, they’re going to get too much credit when we do well and they’re going to get a lot of the blame when we don’t, and that’s just the reality of playing that position in this league. But I was pleased with Jordan’s performance.”

Love completed 13 of 24 passes for 176 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions, plus four carries for 24 yards. The Packers hope Rodgers will stay healthy and they won’t have to play Love at all this year, but if Love does have to go, LaFleur sounds confident in him, even if his passing accuracy still leaves a lot to be desired.

  1. Love looked better last night. Two of the int’s weren’t his fault. Receivers dropped about three passes. You can’t just look at the stat line.

  2. He also threw up a duck throwing out of a sack that just luckily landed in no man’s land. That was a dumb throw. But it is the person that doesn’t matter to anyone but the Ravens, so maybe he wouldn’t do that in a game that matters.

  3. It looks like Packers 30 year run of HOF QB play will soon be coming to an end. Rodgers may have a couple of years left but when he retires, the Pack will be fighting with the Lions and Bears for last place in the NFC North.

  4. When the HC has to resort to defending his preseason starting QB after he throws 3 INT’s in 3 consecutive drives, it’s not a good thing.

    Carry on…

  5. Duh? What’s he going to say, this is one of the biggest 1st rnd pick mistake GB has made in yrs? The guy is trade bait, especially if AR comes back before all he’s worth is maybe a 6th rnd?

  6. The guy has never looked good. First round pick which they traded up for and starting to look like a bust.

  7. Definitely two of the three picks were the receivers fault and there a lot of dropped balls. With that being said, Love is just flat out inaccurate and a definite bust as a first round pick.

Definitely will be a back up in the NFL for a few years.

  8. This is the first preseason game of only the second of two preseasons he’s played. The first season was cancelled. He’s ahead of Rodgers at this point. Key word; preseason.

  9. After watching Jordan Love play,he doesn’t look any better and has shown little improvement and this was a preseason game against guys that won’t be on the team in a few weeks anyways. You would think sitting behind Aaron Rodgers for 2 whole seasons would help in his development. He looked lost/unsure in his progressions and had zero command of the offense.

  10. Love will either be an interception prone starter, or a decent backup in the NFL. His ceiling might be Jameis Winston.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Packer fans have grown accustomed to wishful-thinking predictions like this, for over three decades.

Doesn’t matter? Tell that to a player where its his only shot to make it big. You can get cut off of one bonehead play. Ravens winning preseason games is a testament their draft process and system of evaluating players. They don’t play their starters more than any other team. The streak is nice, but if it were really that important, you would have heard about it before last year.

  13. There was a packer game on last night….so of course the comment section is full of Viking trolls. I love how interested they are in our back up qb

  14. It looks like Packers 30 year run of HOF QB play will soon be coming to an end

Someone who just started watching or has no memory might say that, yes. But many will remember Rodgers first starts and first season as a disaster too, and look how he turned out. So not worried about it yet.

Look who’s back. Viking fans finally crawling out from under their rocks after the stink of last season has worn off and are ready to start running their mouths again. Set your clock by it.

There’s only one really big problem with your statement, Jordan Love isn’t Aaron Rodgers and he will never do anything similar. It’s not Loves fault that the Packer brain trust made a mistake and over drafted Love. He’s done absolutely zero in three years to show he’s capable of being a starting NFL QB let alone a successful one. By year three Rodgers had shown enough for the Packers to hand over the reins in year four something Love has obviously failed to do. I agree with not being worried about the QB after Rodgers because he’s not even on the roster at this point.

  17. He only has to lose 2 more games for the Packer brass to tell us how great he looked and schmooze him up! The fact remains that anyone who has watched the game knows he’s not the answer! Try to pound a square peg in the round hole!

  18. On the plus side, Amari Rodgers looks like a completely different (better) player than when we last saw him. He may contribute in a positive way this season.

  19. It makes you wonder what Green Bay’s front office long term plans are for Jordan Love since extending Rodgers. At this point you let him play out his cheap contract as a backup to Aaron Rodgers til after next season and don’t pick up his 5th yr option. Let him walk because every time he plays his trade value drops further. No way Green Bay gets even close to a 1st rd pick in return on a trade for Jordan Love.

    ___________

He wouldn’t know what he was looking at.

  21. I just shake my head and laugh seeing so many folks take these preseason games so seriously. Take a pill.

  22. Ya one more 3 interception game and his trade value, I dont think he ever had a trade value to be honest, goes to nothing.
The Packers are always hell bent o make the GM look good which means his high picks must be glamored up and yuked up to cover up Gutt is a terrible GM when it comes to the draft.
Bottom line take Rodgers out of the mix and this is a team, one notch above the bears maybe.

  23. Apparently people fail to realize that Jordan was not playing with the first team offense.

  24. For those of you who dont follow the packers practice sessions, Love has been tossing picks left and right in practice, failing to read the d or trying to force a ball to a well covered receiver. So this outing is nothing more then him showing us that he cant read a defense. Yes the one ball was a deflection but great QB’s throw very few deflections. He hit someones helmit so the interception is on him.
Actually the one TD he threw I questioned why is he throwing to a guy not even looking for the ball. It was sheer luck the guy turned around and make a miracoulous catch and scored.

  25. He is not a starting NFL quarterback. I hope they can turn him into a serviceable backup.

  26. The first round bust rate for NFL quarterbacks is pretty high (look it up.) The one statistic that is common among those that didn’t excel is starting and playing in sixteen regular season games. That’s how it is measured. Jordan Love has started two regular season games. Two. Statistically he’s actually doing better than Rodgers did at the same point. That’s the palpable fear being expressed by Viking Fan. Is it possible the Packers may have a fourth seventeen-year HOF quarterback ruining their lives?

Viking Fan can load up on the negativity all he wants. What is said is one thing. What is heard is more wishing, hoping, and praying.

  27. Gutie is a good Gm! However he clearly missed on Love! The way he holds the ball isn’t even good! His hands on top before he raises the ball! You will never have a quick release with that motion! I guess this is not brought up, clearly a flaw!

  28. ImaPayne says:

It was sheer luck the guy turned around and make a miracoulous catch and scored.
    +++++
Receivers turning to look for the ball is sheer luck? It’s miracoulous you can type with your stupidity helmit on so tight.

  29. Maybe he needs a booster in confidence. or talent.
Good thing they didnt just stay put and draft Michael Pittman or Chase Claypool.

  30. He played decent, they’re really doing their best to get his confidence up. He has potential, and I think he is kind of getting it. Some inaccurate throws on easy passes… some nice throws on more difficult ones. It’s his 3rd season. As a vikings fan I hope he fails, but only after he shows enough promise to warrant naming him the future.
    Skol!

  31. Remember when Packer fans claimed love was going to be in the hall of fame? Dopey. What an awful performance that was.

  32. Love had three interceptions but two of them were caused by the receivers who tipped the balls to the defensive back. One of the interceptions was on him. There we two of five regulars playing on the offensive line. All the running backs were third string or below, the receivers were all rookies, practice squad regulars and the like. Plus only one starter was on defense.

So please give the guy a break. For all of you thinking it’s the end of the Packers after Rodgers retires, well, keep thinking that way. I like surprises.

  33. Packers coach Matt LaFleur defended Love, saying that two of his three interceptions were not his fault. ___ Ya ya ya love is the Lando Calrissian of the NFL. LaFleur is trying his best to polish something

  34. It’s obvious that, barring an injury, Love is never going to start a game for GB. And it’s also obvious that the LaFleur/Guetenkusts job is to try to pump his trade value and no one is buying it.

  35. Love will start for Green Bay the minute Rodgers goes down, retires, or moves on. It won’t matter to me one bit. There’ll be growing pains just as there was with Favre, just as there was with Rodgers. There were no guarantees with either of them and Viking Fan tried to get his two-cent opinion heard back then too. How did that work out?

  36. “Chris Hamlett says:

Apparently you didn’t realize that Jordan was not playing against a first team defense.

It was 2nd and 3rd teamers against 2nd and 3rd teamers.

Just the facts, gibson, just the facts.

  38. Thinking about it more. I think we can safely trade rogers now. Love is qb1, franchise baby!

I doubt love can even go 1 and done
    Xxxxxxxxxxxx

    I doubt it too.

  40. Drafting Love resulted in two more MVPs for Rodgers, and the Packers two best shots at the Super Bowl since 2011.

If Love never materializes into the Packers starter, it won’t bother me in the least.

I’d say draft another guy, but its sounding more and more like Rodgers sees the finish line.

  41. To be fair, some athletes need to actually play in live-fire action to improve. I am a Vikings fan and I say give the guy a chance to actually play and see what he has. Next week could be a huge jump for him.

  42. Seems like a i be a tendency of his. He is athletic – but everyone in the the league is an athlete. He led the nation in interceptions in his last year of college as a redshirt junior. Seems like more of the same.

But why didn’t this affect Burrow or Herbert? Or the next year Max Jones? They didn’t have a future HOF QB to learn from either.

    ==========

Jaire Alexander was his first pick, unquestionably 1 of the top 5 corners in the League

Rashan Gary in 2019.. really solid last year, not much before that

Love in 2020.. Stokes last year, looks like Alexanders bookend.

If 3 out of 4 of his 1st rounders hit, I’ll be good with that.

I’ll take that over Thompsons string of devastation toward the end (Nick Perry, Datone Jones, Damarious Randall, Clinton-Dix..)

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

After two starts? That’s who you’re comparing him with? There’s nothing like experience. Stick him in there for an entire season and then let’s see. As I’ve pointed out several times (please write this down for future reference,) Jordan Love should be judged after starting sixteen games. That’s the judgment benchmark for new quarterbacks and Jordan Love deserves the same. Otherwise, it’s only opinions and you know what they say about opinions. You’d be better off comparing him to Cousins’ first two starts.

  46. You’re only as good as your last performance. What’s the HC LaFleur supposed to say? Do like Zimmer did? Love should be ahead of the curve right now – Packer fans you know this to be true, but you all were doing Lambeau Leaps when ya drafted him instead of a WR in 2020. Now your WR corp is below average.

    Last performance

    Love 13/24 176 yds 2 TDs 3 INTs RTG 66.0

    Mond 9/14 119 yds 2 TDs 0 INTs RTG 130.7

Looking at those stats you would think Mond was drafted earlier before Love. Now those 3 INTs could not be Love’s fault too. Could it be the below average WR corp you think Rodgers is going to elevate ran wrong routes? Not always the QBs fault. Love needs to start step up and start showing the Packers organization he wasn’t a bad draft choice. He’s coming up on almost three years in the league and should be improving not regressing.

So a first rounder should be compared to a fourth rounder? Please stop that is just nonsense. Then again you also said Justin Jefferson would be lucky to have as good of a career as Jake Kumerow. Just quit enjoy your pension from Shopko and stay off this internet, it seems numbers and logic frighten and confuse you.
