Byron Allen believes he’ll buy the next NFL team that’s for sale

Media mogul Byron Allen wanted to buy the Denver Broncos. It didn’t work. He thinks it eventually will.

Allen recently told TMZ.com that he believes he’ll buy the next team that is for sale.

“When you lose to the richest family in the world, it’s not a bad day in the office,” Allen said, referring to the Wal-Mart Walton-Penner group that plunked down $4.65 billion for the Broncos.

“Listen,” Allen added. “Buying an NFL football team is a process and we had the pleasure of being a part of that process. We didn’t get this one, but I’m highly confident we’ll get the next one.”

There’s nothing wrong with confidence and optimism. But Allen’s group wasn’t even among the finalists for the Broncos. Also, and as PFT has reported, Josh Harris would have made a $5 billion bid for the Broncos if that would have closed the deal. When he failed to get an assurance that, for example, the Walton-Penners wouldn’t have simply gone to $5 billion and one penny, Harris bowed out.

When the next team is for sale (possibly the Seahawks, after May 1, 2024), Harris possibly will be willing to make the same $5 billion bid. Unless there’s someone else who would pay $5 billion and one penny.

To get a team, Allen will have to be in that ballpark, with 30 percent of the cash coming from his own pocket — unless the league is willing to relax the rules in order to ensure that there will be an ownership group with a controlling owner who is Black.

  1. To get a team, Allen will have to be in that ballpark, with 30 percent of the cash coming from his own pocket — unless the league is willing to relax the rules in order to ensure that there will be an ownership group with a controlling owner who is Black.

As I see it, standards exist for a reason. So if they are willing to relax the rule for one person, then there is no reason for the rule to exist.

  2. The NFL should put the Cleveland Browns or the Washington Commanders up for sale and let HIM automatically get the team with his last bid from the Broncos attempt. Solves so many problems the NFL IS HAVING WITH THOSE franchises.

  3. The reason for the rule is to protect the franchise to ensure the “owner” has the necessary capital to run the franchise, competitively. Relaxing the rule isn’t good for that goal’s achievement. I’m guessing it won’t be relaxed & rich minorities who want to be the majority owner of an NFL team will need to find that 30 percent.

  4. I wonder if it matters to him which NFL franchise becomes available, or if it is just the next one no matter what team it is.

  5. The problem with Seattle is a certain Amazon guy or several Microsoft billionaires that could easily dig through their sofas for some spare change that anyone of them could easily buy the Seahawks with an all cash offer to again outbid Byron and to keep the team in Seattle. His best hope is Washington if the other owners force danny boy to sell. He won’t have the money to afford Miami (again if the owner is force to sell); expect this one to go to one of the arab ownership groups that own certain soccer teams for around $10 billion.

  6. End of the day, the guy or gal willing to pay the most gets the team. That’s how it should be. If you’re selling your house, and it’s not to a family member, you’re not going to give a 20-30% discount to buyer X vs buyer Y.

  7. The reason the NFL wants a controlling owner is so they can appear to be a family business. Look at all the shots of ownership in their skyboxes during a telecast. Do you think that occurs simply because its good TV or does the NFL insist upon the shots to build the image they want to portray.

  8. Lots of the owners today inherited their money. Maybe it’s in the league’s best interest to give franchises to people who actually have the necessary business skills to figure out a way to make money if the going ever gets tough. Lots of owners have had everything handed to them, so they might not have any idea how to keep the league afloat. Lots of ways to look at things. Or the Amazon guy and the Tesla guy could buy the entire league. Rules and laws change from time to time. It’s kind of whatever Jerry Jones and the rest of the owners want to do.

  9. You’d think that the NFL wants new ownership in Miami and Washington so he’s probably going to have 3 opportunities in the near future.

  10. As badly as Allen wants a team, I doubt he wants one through affirmative action. He wouldn’t want the bar lowered just to make him majority owner. He doesn’t strike me as that kind of person.

  11. Byron Allen will need at least $2 Billion Cash of his own money to be the principle owner.
His Net worth is listed as $ 400 Million or 20% of what he needs.( I wish I had $ 400 Million a lot of cash for a regular person, but not close to enough to be an NFL Owner ) Sorry Byron
