Jim Irsay ready for Colts to establish a “new era” of greatness

The Colts had a 97 percent chance of making the postseason heading into Week 18 against the worst team in football. They lost to the Jaguars and missed the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

Colts owner Jim Irsay, who has openly criticized Carson Wentz‘s play last season, mentioned the team’s former quarterback only in passing Wednesday when meeting with beat reporters.

“We went through the season with some inconsistency at quarterback that led to a massive problems,” Irsay said, via Zak Keefer of TheAthletic.com.

Instead, Irsay wanted to look forward.

The Colts have only one postseason victory since 2015, and they last won the AFC South in 2014. Irsay wants the team to create a “new era” by rekindling what they had from 2000-09 when Peyton Manning was leading the way.

“We are set up for excellence,’’ Irsay said. “Now, we just have to go do it.’’

The Colts added Matt Ryan, Yannick Ngakoue and Stephon Gilmore this offseason to a team that had the most Pro Bowlers in the NFL last season. Those Pro Bowlers included young stars Jonathan Taylor, Quenton Nelson and Shaquille Leonard.

The Colts have a bright future, but Irsay wants the future to start now.

“It’s to go and get that next Lombardi Trophy,” Irsay said. “This is a time to set up another generation of greatness.”

  1. I see another banner hanging for them nothing more and No they are not going to the Super Bowl any time soon Mr Irsay.

  2. You’ll need to find a franchise QB to have any success in the post season. Long in the tooth re-treads won’t get Jim where he wants to be…

  3. I remember last year, when Colts fans were talking about a SB, because they had “gotten their guy” at QB.

That turned out well, didn’t it?

  4. Didn’t he claim the Colts would win “multiple championships” with Andrew Luck?

  5. The Colts have a bright future with 37 year old Matt Ryan? That’s a delusional statement. Someone needs to tell Irsay if he wants a new era of Colts greatness he needs to find a new young QB in the draft. Matt Ryan is an average NFL QB, he’s solid but let’s be honest he isn’t the guy he once was and isn’t great. He’s probably one of the top 15-17 QBs in the NFL at this point. He can’t keep up with the younger top QBs in this league like Mahomes, Herbert, Murray, Burrow, Allen, Lamar etc. This is the golden age of QB play and it’s easier than ever to find a great young QB talent Colts need to take a swing trade up and get there guy next year.

  6. Nothing like ushering in a new era of greatness with a 37 year old QB who hasn’t been to the playoffs or had a winning record since 2017.

  7. I always liked Matt Ryan and his WR’s this year are decent but I think that he will be the Achilles heel this season. Imagine having Julio Jones, Russel Gage, Sanu, and Ridley in their primes and losing consistently

  8. No idea what he’s talking about but at least they have some blue chip players and a QB. Compare that to a team like new england who has no good players and no QB.

  9. They wasted Manning and Luck. One SB over Rex Grossman. On top of that they had Rivers and now Ryan. Probably won’t make the Wildcard this season.

  10. Another era of greatness? When was the first? Start hanging those AFC South title flags.

Didn’t realize those guys played defense.

  13. Another rich owner who is absolutely clueless playing around with an NFL team. Frank Reich is the problem, watch his play calling, it’s awful. The colts have 3 solid running backs on the roster but can’t figure out how to use them to create mismatches. Hynes and Mack continue to waste their careers on the colts bench. They are wasting Johnathan Taylor’s career too. NFL could make more money if they knew how to kick out owners who own teams but really do not try to win like Irsay, Ross, and Snyder.

  14. It could happen, but the Titans are going 3 in a row on division championships.

37 year old Matt Ryan isn’t going to change that.
