The No. 9 is going out of circulation in Washington.

The Commanders announced on Tuesday that they will retire former quarterback Sonny Jurgensen’s No. 9 in a ceremony during the team’s Week 18 home game against the Cowboys. He is the fourth player in franchise history to be honored with a retired number.

Jurgensen was a 1957 fourth-round pick by the Eagles who sat on the bench for four seasons before becoming a starter in 1961 when Norm Van Brocklin retired. He was an All-Pro that season, but wound up getting traded to Washington after the 1963 season.

Jurgensen would spend 11 seasons with the franchise and compiled 1,831 completions for 22,585 passing yards and 179 passing touchdowns. He is second in franchise history in all three categories and led the NFL in passing yards three times during his run in Washington. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

After retiring, Jurgensen moved into broadcasting and spent 38 years in Washington’s radio booth.

  1. It’s about time! Jurgenson’s probably turning over in his grave about this idiotic name change.

  2. Mister snyder must be in more legal trouble because he only makes these kinds of long-past-due moves for former players when his butt’s over the fire. Worst franchise in all of sports

  3. Will it be a #9 Redskins jersey or will it be a new #9 Commanders jersey which isn’t accurate to his time playing?

He’s not dead. In fact, today is his birthday.

  5. Christian Adolph Jurgenson!
Sonny was the best thing that happened to a bad team in the 60’s.
So fun to watch that windmill style throwing motion.
He made better players of everyone he played with. This was long overdue and should be done in the beginning of the season instead of the end.

HOLY MOLLEY!!!’ Dan did something right!!’ Fantastic move!!!

It’s not done yet. They’ll probably find some way to screw it up!

  7. The Eagles traded Him for Norm Snead. He was a decent & competent QB but without the arm talent of Sonny.

  8. Just seeing the picture of Sonny with the R on his helmet brings joy to my heart. What great memories, He had a show on channel 9, just before the CBS NFL show. Better times for sure.

  9. Love Sonny …. With Charley Taylor, Bobby Michell and Jerry Smith . Must see football in the 1960’s
