Kyle Shanahan on Jimmy Garoppolo: Any scenario is possible

USA TODAY Sports

It’s August 23 and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains on the 49ers roster.

There haven’t been many rumors of interested teams, aside from the Browns reportedly considering him before quarterback Deshaun Watson‘s 11-game suspension was finalized. But since then, Cleveland has reportedly been content to stick with Garoppolo’s former Patriots teammate Jacoby Brissett.

So Garoppolo continues to work out on his own at the 49ers facility. Asked if Garoppolo could end up being on the team when the regular season starts, head coach Kyle Shanahan said, “I think any scenario is possible.”

“I communicate with Jimmy all the time,” Shanahan said in his press conference. “He looks the same as he always has. He always throws it really good. So, he looks the exact same.”

General Manager John Lynch also said the 49ers don’t have to do anything with Garoppolo before next Tuesday’s roster reduction to 53 players.

“No, he’s doing great,” Lynch said, via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group.

Team owner Jed York said last week the 49ers are happy to keep Garoppolo on the roster and pay his $24.2 million salary. But given that San Francisco has fully moved on to last year’s No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance and Garoppolo isn’t even participating in team meetings, it’s difficult to see a scenario where Garoppolo remains on the team for the 2022 season.

But where Garoppolo will end up is still a mystery.

  1. If the Niners keep Jimmy on the roster a lot of people will be shocked. Not going to lie…it would be amazing if they did.

  2. he is gonna stay on the roster, they did not like what they seen from Lance, JG is insurance for them.

  3. He could be the best back up in the nfl… when you have an inexperienced QB who hardly played in college, why not keep him? I don’t think money or an uncomfortable QB room are viable excuses to cut the best back up in the nfl.

  4. What are the odds a scrambling QB gets hurt?
What are the odds a young QB with no experience gets hurt?
Maybe you keep your vet as an expensive insurance policy…

  5. This is wrong to treat someone like this. Decent organizations would have released him a long time ago so he could catch on with a team and have a real shot to start with someone else. This is dirty for the team to do. I hope all free agents think twice before signing there. This is how they treat their players, like property not people.

  6. Enough of this back and forth.

Stop holding Garoppolo hostage with the hope that a QB from a contending team gets a serious injury. Either commit to keeping him NOW or just cut him already.

  7. 9ers are dead last in cap space (by $2 million), and there are a couple players like some guy named Bosa who are due for a new contract. Shanna-Lynch spent the last seven months totally blowing Jimmy’s departure, and now teams are simply waiting for the day when he will inevitably be cut.

Remember when Shanna-Lynch fully believed Jimmy G was worth at least two first-round picks? Good times!

    ————-
Not sure what youd find amazing about it 🤷‍♂️ If they decided to keep him it would likely be the same type of scenario that they have now with him, he works out off to the side and they hope for a trade in-season.

  9. It’s not a mystery at all where Jimmy will end up. He’ll be on the street and soon. Won’t get a starting gig and will have to play his way into one for 2023

  10. Who cares what anyone else on the outside says. 49ers can do whatever they want. They have been to two NFC championships and a Super Bowl in the past 5 years. They are a contender again this year. How many other organizations have done that in the past five years?

  11. Worst case scenario with fairly decent odds of playing out- they cut Jimmy, he goes to Seattle they make the Playoffs and Niners don’t quickly ending Lynch’s attempt to be a GM and Shanahan trying to find a team that has a spot for him as a position coach. Only way to prevent this is to keep Jimmy on the roster (put some pressure on Lance to perform) or package Jimmy and 2nd rounder or so to some team in exchange for a 7th and the Niners pay nearly all his salary (Carolina, Browns, Giants, Raiders).

  12. Shanahan and Lynch clearly got York’s message last week: “Hey, knuckleheads! Stop making it look like Jimmie has zero future here. It dumps our trade leverage.”

  13. Here’s a thought: How about you fully integrate him in camp and let the best QB play?

This is horrible treatment of JG.

  14. If they niners keep him into the regular season the only way another team will take him in trade is if the niners take on a bog portion of his contract dollars.

  15. The part no one talks about is Jimmy is fine with all this.

Methinks there a back room deal in place to keep him from going to Seattle. In exchange for staying on the roster the Niners end up paying him the $26M he’s due this year. He has shown the propensity to favor the $$$ over competition anyway. There’s been some strange reports coming from former Patriots players about not playing hurt, and now leaks in the organization talking about how he went completely MIA after signing that huge deal.

  16. I thought there was no way JG would be on the roster. However, seeing how things stand is it possible that the niners keep him on the roster and trade him sometime during the season?
They are on the hook for the time he is with the team, correct?
It’s a gamble but one that might just work

  17. ” Garoppolo isn’t even participating in team meetings”
If this happens to you where you work, you need to update your resume.

  18. Yea, they won’t keep him and it’s good business to hold onto him until the last possible minute. Jimmy didn’t do them any favors and the 49ers don’t need to do him any either.

  19. This is all smoke blowing. Jimmy G. will be cut. Their is no way they are going to pay him all that money to carry a clip board on the sidelines. I would wait, if I were the Browns, until they cut him, and then offer him the most money of any team to bring him on board. But the Browns being the Browns it’s like checking your gas tank with a match. The 49ers either have money to just burn or else they are just posturing to try to get ANYTHING for him before they get nothing.

  20. I’m all for just cutting him and moving on but if both sides are going to play this awkward dance, hold onto him until right before week 1. Offer him a renegotiated contract with 10 mil guaranteed to be the back up with a bunch of playing time incentives he will only reach if he becomes the starter. Best of both worlds for both sides. If not, cut him loose and move on. I don’t think Jimmy is getting an opportunity or more money anywhere else. He knows the playbook and would instantly be the best backup/insurance policy in the league. Not likely, but I don’t see any other way he is on the roster. Niners don’t want to carry that guaranteed salary. They want to be able to roll the cap space over to next year.

What are the odds your expensive backup who’s been injury prone his whole career gets hurt?

He has no guaranteed money left on his contract. The Niners could cut him before September 10 and not owe him a dime. However, if they keep him then they have to pay his 25 million dollar salary prorated week to week. They COULD keep Jimmy and trade him in season, but they would be paying him until that happened. The problem is no one believes that they will keep him and teams are waiting for the Niners to give up and cut him. I hope that they do not do that. Hold onto him. He is still a valuable chip. Once the season begins and Jimmy is still a Niner THEN teams will be willing to negotiate.

    *********

    Says who?

You don’t get to this level of success in the NFL without being manically competitive. No starting QB wants to sit.

  24. It is said that WWE Kardashian fans are turning to the NFL for their daily dose of DRAMA!

  25. He’s going to end up in Indianapolis as a backup this season.

Too late in the game for him to sign with Seattle or Cleveland when he gets cut. One week of practice is not enough for a coach fighting for their job to turn to him.

Indianapolis is a good scenario too. Sit back and learn and go into next offseason with a few choices like Trubisky did. The job in Indy could end up being his too, this season due to injury, or next year due to poor play from Ryan.

  26. The reason the Niners are doing this is he holds value. Players are constantly holding out or requesting trades so what’s wrong with a team taking a hard approach when it comes to getting compensation? If they let him walk he could easily walk on to the Seahawks roster and take on a starting role. That would be bad for business. Look what AB and LeVeon Bell did to the Steelers. They set that organization back with their antics and it was all because of “player empowerment”. Jimmy G may not be those kind of personalities but this is the business side to the league. If you hold value, teams want that back in return. The downside is if Trey Lance struggles you’re going to have a whole fan base calling for a QB who can’t seem to get it done in big time games.

  27. Josh Allen or Tom Brady couldn’t get these Seahawks to the playoffs* this year, so it’s unlikely JG will do so. Still, Seattle seems to understand the Niners offense, and a worst case for the Niners brass would be to miss the playoffs at 9-8 with a couple of losses to the JC and the ‘hawks.
    ———-
*It’s the NFL. Weird things can happen. The Seahawks have enough scattered talent to stumble into the playoffs with a bunch of positive breaks… but I wouldn’t bet more than a beer on it, a light beer at that.

  28. The 49ers are a legit super bowl contender. Trey Lance could get injured the first couple weeks of the season, and then what? Running QB’s don’t have a good record of staying healthy. Pocket QB’s don’t either, so there’s no problem with going into the season with two good QB’s. Or at least one. We know Jimmy is a good QB. We can’t really say that about Trey Lance until we see it. So why would you get rid of a legit super bowl QB before you find out about the kid you drafted to replace him? Kyle Shanahan knows a lot about QB’s so I’ll have to trust him. Brings back memories of RG3 and Mike Shanahan in Washington. Perhaps it was the owner who made them draft RG3???

  29. The sooner the 9ers admit that theyre unethical liars that players should steer clear of by cutting Jimmy G just before week 1, the better

  30. JG hasn’t been traded because he’s just another middle of the pack starting QB. The only team valuing him is the 49ers. He’ll be cut soon enough.

  31. Any scenario is possible? How about they treat JG with deserved respect? Shanahan gets to wear his favorite flat brim? The organization correctly renames themselves the Santa Clara 49er’s? Someone finds Shanahan’s upper lip? Shanahan has a winning record with someone other than JG? And my favorite and most hopeful scenario…Jed York puts some of his money to good use and brings back Lucky Lager?

So what happens if Try struggles or gets hurt and Jimmy comes in and plays better?

  33. It’s kinda weird that they’ve let the whole league know that they don’t want him. They’re just waiting for him to be cut. So is he.

  34. Not allowed at team meetings? Jimmy should sue for a hostile work environment. Lots of liberal juries out in SF!

  35. The three elements of most concern by most of those who seem concerned are: Jimmy winding up in Seattle; or two – Jimmy being held on to by the team as a reduced pay Primo backup, and three, being let go in fairness immediately so he can join another team while there’s time. The problem: those who, for some unknown reason, feel being a Seahawk would be a problem are overlooking the fact that the Seahawks and the team knows Jimmy’s strengths/weaknesses like a book, and he would pose no threat; and Jimmy being the BEST possible backup to Lance would make the most sense – therefore, it will never happen, and three, being let go now to land in a place of his choosing is a non-starter because there is no place for him to choose to go to. Add to that, back in March, all the NFL served notice that they did not want him.

If Trey Area struggles then you play Jimmy. It’s that simple. They know who and what Jimmy is. Obviously they think Trey is better. If he isn’t then you let him marinate a little longer and make another run with the guy who took you to the NFC championship two of the last three years. But let’s be honest… Trey is going to hand the ball off to that running game and ride the defense just fine!

  37. Jimmy GQ is still on the team, wants to play or resume his career yet the 49er brass actually don’t allow him on the field or in meetings, don’t trade him or release him, yet he’s somewhere at team headquarters. This is beyond bizarre and very awkward. Not sure what free agent with options would ever set foot in Santa Clara and Trey Lance, I hope you’re paying attention because they’ll do you the same way.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Yes, and Jimmy led them to those 2 NFC championships and Super Bowl in the past 5 years. Their team *on paper* is still very good but be careful what you wish for: all that talent on the roster didn’t win games when Garoppolo was off the field, as shown by Shanahan’s 8-28 career HC record without JG.

  39. For a team that has a possibility of having the #1 overall defense, might not be a bad idea to keep Jimmy around. No reason aside from a quarterback injury or a entire defensive line being injured for this team not to make it too the NFCCG at least.

  40. in a situation like this i find it weird that a player isnt just allowed to quit, like everyone else in employment. jimmy G knows hes not going to see that 20 million so whats in it for him in sticking around?

  41. All well and good, why would you want the number 1 backup in the league not taking reps with the team?

Are we serious right now? Keep him as a backup but don’t come near the team. Fools.

  42. He would not be the best backup in the NFL. The reason nobody wants him, is that he is an average QB at best. Everyone has better already other than maybe the Seahawks. And I would roll with Drew lock before JG unless he signed for backup money. For some reason 49ers fans think everyone on the roster is a star and everyone else wants them. Well, I hate to break it to you, but the talent is no better than anyone else. The offense is going to be average to worse with Lance or JG and the coach is not as smart as he thinks. Playoffs are not happening this year.

  43. I understand why they are holding onto him.
It costs them nothing, and they may get something of value for him in a trade.

But I wish they would stop with these comments.
When you repeatedly lie it makes you look bad, and gains you nothing.
The 49ers should say nothing, rather than lie.

  44. Please be advised this entry was made following the Thursday night preseason Finale.

I gotta admit, I have maintained an optimistic outlook toward Trey Lance for this upcoming season. But I have become a bit concerned following his game tonight and his showing thus far in the pre-season. Vs. Houston He looked off beat, threw inaccurate/low passes, and generally did not look like a guy with 2 years as at the pro level. He has had time to learn the Shanahan play book. He practices against one of the leagues best defenses on a daily basis so he is no stranger to pressure. And yet, against the Texan’s first team, he looked kinda below average. His stat line was pedestrian and the majority of his completed passes were short check downs or screens. He took bad sacks and underimpressed, showing only limited growth from the last time we saw him. Maybe even regressing a bit.

At this point, I hope that Jed York was serious the other night when he said the Niners have no problem keeping Jimmy G on the roster to start the season. Because if Lance proves to not be ready, having a capable back up with a Super Bowl and NFC Championship game starts under his belt is as close to optimal as it gets for a #2 guy. Cost would obviously be a concern at some point, for a guy getting starter money as a back up, but he could be the starter again at some point. I just think letting Garoppolo play out the last year of his deal is a better idea, then going to Nate Sudfeld with the game and maybe the season in the balance. We are built to win and contend RIGHT NOW!!! This potential issue has all the ingredients needed to be a season killer, as we have the 4th toughest schedule of any team this season. But thats why Shanahan and Lynch make the big bucks. Right? Hopefully in addition to making all that money, they make the right decision here. In any case GO NINERS
