Matt Araiza is sued for gang rape

Bills rookie punter Matt Araiza, who has quickly risen to fame with a strong leg and a catchy nickname, faces a very serious off-field issue before his first NFL game.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Araiza is among the defendants in a civil lawsuit alleging gang rape. The other defendants are Zavier Leonard and Nowlin “Pa’a” Ewaliko. All three men were San Diego State football players at the time of the alleged incident.

The incident allegedly occurred last year, at an off-campus party. The alleged victim was 17 years old.

Araiza’s lawyer said the accusation is false, and he accused the plaintiff of making a “money grab.” (As we recently learned in the Deshaun Watson case, it’s always a money grab, until it isn’t.)

“It’s a shakedown because he’s now with the Buffalo Bills,” Kerry Armstrong told the Times. “There is no doubt in my mind that Matt Araiza ever raped that girl.”

There is an ongoing criminal investigation of the incident. No arrests have been made, and San Diego police have not publicly identified any suspects.

The Times previously reported that the university failed to alert the campus community about the alleged incident, and that the school waited more than seven months to launch an investigation.

“We were recently made aware of a civil complaint involving Matt from October 2021,” the Bills said in a statement to the Times on Thursday. “Due to the serious nature of the complaint, we conducted a thorough examination of this matter. As this is an ongoing civil case, we will have no other comment at this point.”

The NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy does not apply to incidents occurring before a player enters the NFL, either via the draft or by signing as an undrafted free agent. However, such allegations can become relevant to the punishment imposed for any off-field misconduct occurring after the player joins an NFL team.

    Tell that to Zeke again!…

  2. Bills fan here. If this is true, I don’t want him anywhere near the team if it is true. We aren’t the Browns.

Beane continues to struggle to draft well.

    Goodell will do nothing.

    ———-

It’s ok. He can suspend himself for 2 games at least and won’t be needed.

  4. You have to be completely pure of heart, mind, soul to play for the Bills.
They sent Marshawn Lynch packing after a hit & run.

  5. Colts may have caught a break on this one by grabbing Matt Haack when they did.

  6. If the Bills knew this they are idiots to have drafted him. They already had a great and well liked, high character team. It’s this type of distraction and player that brings down potential dynasties. Just ask the one-year dynastic Chiefs.

  7. The lawsuit should not be entertained untill the criminal issues are filed

  8. Who is the Kerry Armstrong in the article vouching for his friend, I mean, the punter? Interesting that these things bubble up late in the game.

  9. Araiza’s lawyer said the accusation is false

    ——————-

    No one saw that coming.

  10. The NFL is going down hill like someone dropping a rock. Might as well be playing for the Toilet Bowl, instead of the Super Bowl. I miss the old games myself, I hope one of the other leagues models themselves after that.

  11. Before anyone asks why the school took so long…
“SDSU launched a Title IX investigation last month, and in a statement said the school was advised by police that it could not conduct its own inquiry without potentially compromising the police department’s criminal investigation.”

The school didn’t bury its head in the sand, it was asked to hold off by SDPD, which confirmed this.

  12. Absolutely no facts yet. Don’t judge to quickly. Remember the Duke lacrosse team?

And if it’s not true? None of us know one way or another. People are too fast to convict based on an accusation alone.

  14. Can you travel out of state if you’re a registered sex offender? Like on team charter flights?

    Money grab.

If she was 17, it’s a crime. Whether it’s a money grab or not.

  16. he is innocent until proven guilty people. it’s one woman not 26, maybe he is innocent. i am not defending him if this true, just saying just because you read this it doesn’t make it true. let it play out

  17. Definitely not a Bills fan, but no NFL team had knowledge of this incident from almost a year ago? It’s either the Bills tried to “cover” this up, or this is BS. With technology, easy access to information, etc. It is hard for me to buy that it took until now for this to unfold.

  18. How about a person is innocent until proven guilty for accused crimes. If he is found guilty then drop him like we do passes in Cleveland. If he is not guilty then how about we put this woman filing this suit in shackles and then charge her for every game in his career the amount of money he makes base pay per game to send the message that there is no situation that is acceptable to falsely accuse a man of sexual assault and ruin their lives over it even the accusation of it is damaging to them and the public image. On the other hand if he is lying and is found guilty of this then by all means let his name bring disgust to anyone who speaks it and put his ass in jail for the harshest allowed sentence plus 2 years for hiding his ass in my Buffalo bills red white and blue uniforms. Bills fan since 1990..

  19. So Beasley doesn’t have a job cause he was outspoken on the vaccine, but Watson and Araiza have jobs? Great job NFL. Really have your priorities straight.

  20. Good Lord, what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Does that still exist in this country?

    Accusation does not equal guilt.

Let the judicial process play out before you start trying to ruin the man’s career for Pete’s sake.

  21. Attorney says it’s a “shakedown” because he’s with the Bills, incident reported before he was drafted. Please help us with your timeline counsel.

  22. “We were recently made aware of a civil complaint involving Matt from October 2021,” the Bills said in a statement to the Times on Thursday. “Due to the serious nature of the complaint, we conducted a thorough examination of this matter…”

My intuition tells me the Bills and the other 31 teams knew about it too.
I believe the Bills were being a little misleading by stating they were “recently” made aware… how recent? In the very next sentence they said they “conducted” a thorough examination, conducted not conducting. Past tense, it’s over. If they just found out about it yesterday, the thorough investigation probably wouldn’t have been completed a day later. It’s too bad the Bills aren’t more transparent here with a detailed timeline of events.

If, for the sake of it, the Bills did do their homework, they must truly believe he’s innocent to have drafted him. I find it hard to believe they’d put themselves in such a position over a punter who’ll be used once or twice a game.

  23. Reports say Bills were aware months ago. So much for having to have a “pure heart” to play for Bills. What a crock.

  24. If this is accurate and it really occurred, you have got to feel horrible for the victim. After going through a seriously traumatizing ordeal, they are now called gold digging, money grabbing etc. and made to feel like they are to blame. On the other hand If it never really did happen, the people involved have their name smeared forever. There should to be a way to keep this quiet until the criminal portion/investigation of it is over. There is just too much damage to be done on top of what may already have been done.

  25. Disgusting and abhorrent if true. And if he’s proven guilty he should be locked up.

Good Lord, what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty?
    ____________

Some folks are quite confused. Innocent until proven guilty applies only in a court of law. The court of public opinion is free to decide as it wishes.

  27. It doesn’t get much more serious than a gang rape of a 17 year old kid. I would never want that hanging around my neck for the rest of my life if there was absolutely no truth to it at all. I would welcome a trial if it came to that then there to be doubts which there will be if he settles this lawsuit. If you’re innocent, don’t pay. If you pay then I hope the Bills cut him.

Bills Mafia will find a way to defend him
    __________________________________________________
Actually, there has been an overwhelming call for him to be cut immediately.

  29. To the innocent until proven guilty argument – that kind of works both ways. There is an ongoing investigation. She reported it back In October

Do you disregard the accusations completely because if you do then you are saying she is lying. Doesn’t she get the benefit of the doubt as well? Unless you think she’s a conniving 17 year old

You have to consider both sides equally.

  30. We owe it to the 22 year old kid to explain his side of the story before we ban him for life.

  31. If the player had come out and vociferously denied the allegations I would consider giving him the benefit of the doubt. However, she is a minor and there is DNA…hence the (female) lawyer denying instead of the player.

Not even a proven NFL player and the shield protects.

  32. Not a single mention of anything about this issue on Bills.com or NFL.com. Cover up? Non-issue? (how?) or just cautious message prep? Ugly and horrific event that is all too common at colleges and high schools – often involving sports teams and cover-ups by admin. The school where the “punt god” event allegedly occurred had just invested over $300m in a new stadium. Bad timing for any negative PR to get out.

  33. Slow down folks….these are still accusations and he has denied any wrongdoing. He deserves the benefit of the doubt until all the facts come out. Innocent until proven guilty is still a thing you know. Also she is seeking the case through civil means instead of criminally which is always questionable in my view. I pray he didn’t do this, but if he is guilty then jail is needed, not a suspension.

  34. Still innocent until proven guilty. I also do not condone such activities but at the point, he is innocent. I think more should be asked why the university waited 7 month to start their investigation. I would be curious to their finding before formulating an opinion.

  35. Even if this is not true, his name will always be connected with it, and people will always have doubt. It’s one of the worst things that a person can be accused of.

  36. Ooof! That’s definitely two words I don’t think anyone would want in the same sentence as their name.

  37. If True, Araiza shouldn’t be playing in the NFL, same as Deshaun. But, like the Duke Case years ago that was proven to be false, we have to get the facts before acting.
