Matt LaFleur: Jordan Love did a lot of good things in preseason finale

Packers quarterback Jordan Love continued to put up mediocre numbers in the third and final preseason game on Thursday night, but Packers coach Matt LaFleur continued to talk up Love’s progress.

Love completed 16 of 26 passes for 148 yards with no touchdowns and one interception, but LaFleur said after the game that he thinks Love played better than the stats would suggest, and that after a rough start Love did a good job of marching the Packers down the field for a touchdown on one drive and a field goal on another.

“There wasn’t a lot open for him, and he was under a lot of duress, and the one thing I loved is, when the game doesn’t start the way you want it to, how do you respond? I think that just shows the maturation process that he’s done over the last couple years. I thought there was a lot of good things out there,” LaFleur said.

Love threw an interception at the end of the first half, but LaFleur said he thinks Love read the defense correctly and Chiefs second-round draft pick Bryan Cook just made a good play on the ball.

“I was not unhappy with the decision at all,” LaFleur said.

Now Love will go back to the sideline while Aaron Rodgers starts the season. LaFleur may have liked what he saw from Love on the field this preseason, but he hopes Love doesn’t take the field again this year unless it’s in mop-up duty at the end of a big win led by Rodgers.

  1. The rubber will meet the road with Love when Green Bay has to decide whether to exercise the fifth year option.

You gotta think that decision has more to do with what Rogers is doing than it does with what Love is doing.

  3. Man, the trolls love them some Love articles. Perhaps they are concerned that Jordan is the second best QB in the division. Does anyone really think that Fields, Goff, and Captain Kirk are better?

  4. If Rodgers goes down I have all the confidence in the world in Jordan Love. Once he’s taken out from under the omnipresent microscope and klieglights, he’ll be fine. Are all first round pick quarterbacks the best that ever played the game? All of them? Please.

  5. I watched this game and he stinks. Go ahead and let him sit on the bench until further notice.

Um, yes, without question, no ifs ands or buts, Cousins is infinitely better. Fields and Goff are better as well, but by a much smaller margin than Cousins. And while GB fans will probably deny it, they know it’s true too, yourself included

  7. Does anyone really think that Fields, Goff, and Captain Kirk are better?

    ——

Yes. 99.9% of people with a working brain think so

  8. Love’s stats over 3 games not very impressive – especially points. The qualification is – before he became a starter, Rodgers never moved the team in preseason as a backup either (just check the records).

  9. Lol I’m sure the packers are inking up that 5th year option as we speak despite just signing that other guy to a record 3 year deal

  10. I hope Love does get the starting job very soon! It will be nice to be rid of “Mr. Egotistica!l”

  11. Translation: “we’re glad he didn’t look as horrible as he does in practice”! The Pack rarely miss on QBs… this is one of those times!

  12. Jordan Love could be the starting quarterback on many teams because what they have at the position clearly isnt better than Love.put love in with the starters on a consistant basis and he will win alot of games.

  13. Why does the head coach brag about a player but you don’t hear anyone else saying anything positive? Maybe cause he’s trying not to really say, he messed up that draft pick?

  14. Love finished the preseason with a QB rating in the mid 60’s. The Packers are in trouble if Rodgers goes down.

  15. I’ll take where Love is at this stage in his development 10x out of 10. Tough slogging against KC’s starting D with no run game leading to obvious passing downs where even grandma knows he’s throwing it.

LaFleur is not trying to inject some confidence publicly as most would intimate. Just watching his decision-making, confidence and ability to make all the throws has me excited about this young man’s future in GB.

  16. “Does anyone really think that Fields, Goff, and Captain Kirk are better?”

    No.

and you forgot…..Jordan Love > Derek Carr

  17. Can you imagine moving up in the first round to get this average backup QB. Rodgers still had 7 good years left at the time. Complete Fail by Packers!!!

  18. From what I’ve seen of Love, imo, he is middle of the pack in backups.
The only reason his pass per is high, ton of easy screens for no yards to avoid interceptions. he had one and two more were almosies. that would have been two of three games with 3 int.

  19. No dog in this – watched Love against the Saints and he looked….OK. Did some good things, but not as far along as, say, Kenny Pickett, who has looked extremely impressive early. Seems he could benefit from another year of ‘watch and learn’

  20. The last time Love played in a real game, the Packers were leading the Lions by 3 points last January with less than 5 minutes to play.

Love had 2 series with a total of 5 plays after the Packers took that 3 point lead.

He had a pass for no gain, an INT, an incomplete pass, a complete pass and another INT.

Meanwhile, Jared Goff (some ignoramus earlier in these comments claimed that Love is the 2nd best QB in the NFC North), led the Lions on two scoring drives (75 yard TD drive and a FG drive) within those last minutes of the game. Last time I checked, the Lions are in the NFC North and Jared Goff outplayed Love – head to head – in crunch time of a REAL game.

  21. Rodgers didn’t light anything up before starting either. Nor did he have a good first year. I remember all of the detractors saying the exact same things about the Favre /Rodgers transition. Hopefully it goes the same way this time and Love just needs to play.

  22. Can you imagine moving up in the first round to get this average backup QB. Rodgers still had 7 good years left at the time.
    —-
Rodgers had just come off back to back crap seasons in which we didn’t make the playoffs and his play was average at best. To say he had 7 years left is silly. We have no idea if he will play 4 more years and we had no idea he’d morph into a different person when Love was drafted. Lastly we have no idea what Love is yet, based on a handful of appearances. There’s just a whole bunch of speculation and hope on your part.

  23. This pick looks worse everday, not only because Love is a bust, but they passed on good receivers like Michael Pittman which probably cost them a trip to the superbowl.

  24. Of course he’s going to say that. They’ve got a for sale sign on the kid. Look when you’re trying to sell an AMC Pacer you don’t advertise it as a good transportation car. It’s a great automobile loaded with all the options and only plays in preseasons.

  25. IMO Love is middle of the pack of back ups. HIs passing per is better due to safe screen passes to the out. He had one interception and possibly two others that were easliy dropped. His distance passing was off all night long. The threaded the needle but then too many of those passes would have been intercepted by first team players.
All in all this guy is nothing more then a back up and not a good back up at that.

  26. Against KC only one starter on the Packers offensive line played. KC ran their first team defense early in the match. Love did throw one bad interception but his numbers were more than ok.

Love is fully capable of running the offense should Rodgers go down. At this point he has mastered the offense and is in a position to move the team forward should Rodgers go down. That is his role. The armchair general managers want to pull the plug, but what’s the alternative? Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph?

The Packers think they have a solid QB there given time to develop. That, however, doesn’t preclude them from drafting another QB in the future.

Often forgotten by the Love haters is Aaron Rodgers was passed on by more than 20 teams before the Packers drafted him, even though they had a HOF’er at the helm. They gave Rodgers time to fix a hitch in his delivery and develop and the rest is history.

  27. Love’s performance has to be balanced by his not playing with any first team. Packers held out 25 players last night. Love had a rotating cast, many of whom will be cut next week. You can’t really expect much cohesion. What he did do is stand strong in the pocket (and outside when he was flushed out), follow his progressions, make some nice throws. A few of the back-ups made strong cases to make the 53-man squad — particularly late round pick wide receiver Samori Toure, and Iowa defensive lineman Jack Heflin.

  28. I have to think the haters here didn’t actually watch him play. That was the Packers 2nd string against the Chiefs first string D. The Pack didn’t have their top 2 tackles or any of their top weapons. Love was decisive and his passes were crisp, a couple were off target but he put them in places where the D didn’t have a chance. The Int was a well thrown ball deep down field that was catchable in my opinion, safety made a play, so be it. No happy feet, no anxiety, fine decision making, toughness… All positives. All you tic-toc watching, youtube educated haters take a deep breath, gather yourselves, it’s going to be a long and successful season for the Packers, accept it.

  29. Some massive copes being written in this comments section.

The kid just doesn’t look very good at this point which should be concerning given that he’s now in his 3rd year. He’s clearly got the physical tools but we’ve all seen innumerable QB’s come and go that had all the tools, but who just couldn’t handle the speed of the game.

QB in the NFL is the most difficult position in all of sports. I’d argue that nothing else comes close. Love wouldn’t be the first talented athlete to fail at it. The sad thing is how he was acquired. The Packers could have acquired another weapon for Rodgers after a 13-3 season.

  30. Packer-haters already desperately concerned that when Love is inserted with the starting unit, the team will continue to dominate the division. And they will.

Jordan Love is no Patrick Mahomes that’s for sure.
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

…….and Mahomes is no Rodgers, and Rodgers is no Brees, and Brees is no Manning, etc., etc., etc.

Love has got game. All he needs is experience. Rodgers looked terrible at the same point in their careers. The haters are hoping, praying, and wishing Love fails.

  32. Love gives me no confidence what so ever. he will be a career back up. He’s average at best. terrible Pick by Gute. No way is he a #1 pick. Maybe a 6th round pick

  33. It’s funny that NOBODY remembers Rodgers first season as a starter. Ill refresh that for you.. 6-10. Yep the almighty himself only won 6 games as a first year starter with 3 full years behind Favre. Not a covid year and limited reps like Love. Maybe Love is a bust but maybe he can be great. We wont know until hes under center every Sunday. To me He looks like a backup that made some good progress since last year.

  34. Sure did for the Chiefs, throwing into triple coverage at this point tells a lot. They must be about to trade him and trying to make it look good.

    ==========

2 overtime losses where he never touched the ball, and a loss on a Mason Crosby miss at the gun (a 52-yarder, in fairness)

His offense was 5th, the defense was 22nd.

  36. Lafleur doth protest too much, methinks. If love was any good greenbay would not need to keep insisting to everyone that he is good. E.g. Cincy never did this for burrow, etc

  37. The Packers could have acquired another weapon for Rodgers after a 13-3 season.
    ==========

I remember *really* liking Roddy White and Heath Miller the year Rodgers was drafted.

Thats why I’m typing here, while another man is paid to make personnel decisions for the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers had another 13-3 season, and the No.1 ranked offense Love’s first year. The needs were few.

I remember you doing it for Christian Ponder.

  40. I like teams who have a well rounded and competent quarterbacks room, as opposed to teams desperately throwing draft picks at a dartboard just two weeks shy of Week 1. 🤣
