Mitch Trubisky to start Steelers’ final preseason game

The Steelers won’t name a starter until giving each quarterback one more chance to prove himself in the preseason finale, but Mitch Trubisky remains the favorite.

Trubisky will start the Steelers’ preseason finale against the Lions on Sunday, head coach Mike Tomlin announced today.

That’s no surprise: Trubisky has been atop the Steelers’ quarterback depth chart throughout the offseason. Unless he turns in a terrible performance or gets hurt against the Lions, from all indications Trubisky will start the Week One opener against the Bengals.

Perhaps more interesting will be the competition between rookie first-round draft pick Kenny Pickett and veteran Mason Rudolph for the No. 2 job. Pickett now appears to be the favorite to win that competition.

Assuming Trubisky does start the regular season, Tomlin may have a quick hook, as Pickett has impressed in the preseason. It shouldn’t be surprising to anyone if Trubisky opens the season as the starter, but closes the season on the sideline.

  1. I will only be surprised if QB1 isn’t the starter for many years. Go Mitchell Trubisky, Go Tar Heels, Go Steelers!!!

  2. No surprise here. Tomlin has the luxury of letting Mitch start while Pickett is getting comfortable. I see Pickett playing if the game gets away from the Steelers however. Mason is hot buttered toast and is being dangled as bait for a trade later in the season when someone’s starter goes down.
Make no mistake Pickett will be the QB of the future.

  3. I only wish my team had as many non losing seasons in a row as the Steelers, but that may be biting them in the butt this time. Pickett is the future, and a year of playing would be a great internship, but I feel the Steelers don’t want that streak to end, which may keep him on the bench.

  4. Funny that.

Glennon goes in QB1 for the Bears, then they draft Trubisky.

Trubisky goes in QB1 for the Steelers, then they draft Pickett.

    What comes around goes around.

  5. Trubisky is good. Rudolph is better. Pickett is elite. The Steelers are in great shape at QB for the next 15 years.

  6. Trubisky is likely the starter for the 1st 3-6 games…but if Pickett continues to show the very professional, methodical outlook & attitude he has so far, it’s going to be difficult to not get him reps during the regular season. The fact that he’s playing on the very same field he’s played on while at PITT, should make this progression even more natural. Having said that, it’s Trubisky’s job to lose.

If Trubisky was good he would be starting for the Bears right now.

  8. I think people are underestimating Trubisky and should probably pump the brakes a little on Pickett.

  9. 29 wins, 21 losses, 64 TDs 38 Ints 87 QB rating.
That’s about old Big Ben territory. Steelers will be right in their sweet spot, around .500 this year with Mitch at the helm.

If Matt Nagy had called plays based on Trubisky’s strengths, he would be starting for the Bears right now.

  11. Are the people saying Trubisky is good blind? Y’all must’ve avoided Bears games when he was the starter. He is awful and so mentally weak.

  12. Tomlin is to smart to start the Rookie, his career would be over quick in that division. Now all they need to do is build the O line and let the rookie set for a while and bam just keep on rolling.

I would hope that the Steelers spent a first round draft pick on a QB who they planned to eventually start. Good thing we didn’t all make the mistake in thinking otherwise. Right?

No one is trading for Rudolph after their starter goes down. Every team already has crappy backups on their rosters. Why trade for someone else’s crappy backup to install as their starter?

  15. This is a really interesting situation. You can make a case for all 3 people (yes, even Mason Rudolph) getting the starting job.

Looking at their schedule there’s a case to be made for the first half being harder, but also the second half being harder. That means there won’t be a right time to bring Kenny in off the bench.

I think any of the 3 will get you 6-8 wins so it comes down to what Mike Tomlin wants. Does he want Kenny to go through growing pains and have a couple 3 pick games? Does he want Mason who could run the offense best, but has such a low ceiling? Or the wildcard of Trubisky?

I’d start Pickett Week 1, but I don’t see a path to the playoffs with any guy. Old school coaches may choose to defer to a veteran just out of habit.

Hey some teams get a QB suspended before he can play a down for them so there teams that do stupid stuff ….right

  17. Tomlin tripping jokes are a sig that someone is starving for some attention. But maybe BB will be there to film it…Teddy Mendacity.
