Bill Belichick thinks Patriots may have “left it on the practice field”

The Patriots had a pair of joint practices with the Raiders on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Friday, the Patriots played the Raiders in the preseason finale for both teams.

For New England, the game didn’t go well. Afterward, coach Bill Belichick tried to be pragmatic.

“All right, well we didn’t have a really good night tonight in any phase of the game,” Belichick told reporters. “That’s obvious. Might have left it on the practice field on Tuesday and Wednesday. Certainly practiced a lot better than we played out there tonight.

“Obviously, I need to clean up a lot of things here. We just didn’t play well in any phase of the game. We didn’t play with any kind of consistency. A couple of touchdowns called back, turned the ball over, didn’t play good defense, didn’t play well in the kicking game. I’ve obviously got to do a better job and so, it starts with me. We’ll get back to work this week and work on what kind of things we need to work on. Like I said, it’s disappointing because we did things a lot better in practice against the Raiders than we did tonight. Hopefully, we can regain that level of execution and performance.”

Even if they do, will it be good enough? Belichick has a knack for getting the most out of what he has. What if he just doesn’t have enough this year?

It’s one of the major questions hovering over a franchise that has gone three full seasons with a postseason victory. Looking around the rest of the AFC, it’s hard not to think the streak will run to four.

  1. Did they leave their talent on the practice field as well? Oh wait, Belichick is terrible at evaluating that too. Just look at N’Keal Harry and Ryan Mallett.

  2. It’s going to be interesting to watch the new generation of Pats fans, who never had to deal w/ bad teams, mediocre QB play & losing seasons. At least online, many seem to think it’s a “just add water” thing with football teams, and success will always continue.

I don’t envy that. Something to be said for paying dues before your team wins anything.

BB is holding this thing together right now, because he’s an amazing coach. But, he’s also not a miracle worker.

  3. Pete Carroll says: “If Belichick just doesn’t have enough this year I’d be happy to swap QB’s with him. He can even have his choice of which one!”

  4. The QB is the least of the Pats problems. I just hope they don’t wreck him. TLawrence is in the same boat

  5. Did they leave their talent on the practice field as well? Oh wait, Belichick is terrible at evaluating that too. Just look at N’Keal Harry and Ryan Mallett.

Tell me any GM who has never had busts in draft

  6. No Brady and no LT exposes this fraud. Buffalo beat the will out of them in January and they haven’t recovered.

  7. In defense of BB, he certainly gave it his all as a Coach throughout the years. People say he always cuts players a year early, maybe he should consider retirement after this season. However I can see him & New England mutually parting ways after the season. He could certainly end up in the front office somewhere, or maybe does Television. His voice & knowledge for Football would be certainly appreciated by the networks.

  8. Left it all on the practice field? Seriously, BB? Virtually every account I’ve read of those practices had the Pats playing even more poorly than in last night’s game — if that’s even possible!

Typically Billy would simply say “On to Miami,” but he realizes that quote won’t age well, since they haven’t beaten the Phins since 2020.

  9. Here’s a bold prediction – Pats trade their 1st round ‘lottery’ pick to the Lions who finished 2022-23 with a winning record. A sure sign the apocalypse is upon us!

  10. The spoiled brat Boston fans never deserved Brady. They turned on him just cause he got sick of the cheater belichick taking the credit for his work. Without Brady new england would always be what it is now – a disgraced, cheating, talentless, irrelevant joke of a franchise with no chance that nobody respects at all.

  11. BB ,asking excuses….unimaginable. Time for the Big Cheato to hang up the whistle and stay at home and kick his dog if he doesn’t sign first command…you know Bill Mr Warmth and personality.

  12. Now is a good time to serve up the reminder that HOF coach Don Shula didn’t make a conference championship game the last 11 years of his career after appearing in the Super Bowl.
And he had a HOF quarterback the entire time.
    It CAN pass you by.

  13. Ha-ha. Remember when all you guys thought BB made a steal in the draft with that sorry QB? Told ya he was a bust! Mac Jones threw to amazingly wide open receivers play after play at Alabama. Those windows aren’t open very far in the NFL. BB take some notes from the Ravens and learn how to evaluate players. Thank God you have free agency! And please, stop giving him credit for drafting Brady. If NE really thought Brady was something, you don’t wait until 199 to pick him.

  14. “Tell me any GM who has never had busts in draft.” The Steelers have been great at drafting receivers the last 25 years. Even Jerry Jones excelled at finding talent. Belichick has no excuses. The best leader knows when to delegate.

  15. “Belichick is terrible at evaluating talent. Just look at Ryan Mallett.”

Really? You had to go back to a 2011 3rd round pick to trash BBs drafting for a 3rd rounder 11 years ago that after a few years the Ravens still traded a draft pick to NE for Mallett?

“Without Brady you get the Cleveland version of Bill.” You mean taking the Browns of all teams to the playoffs? Cool I’ll take that.

  16. Belichick has thrown an unusual amount of praise and compliments to his players ever since Brady left, because of the narrative created largely by players that were unsuccessful in New England, i.e. they said or “heard” it was difficult and no fun to play there. It started to show up in them not being able to sign some free agents that off season. The next off season they threw money at players to get hem to sign there, and they all were apparently instructed on how to present a different narrative to the media, and thus other players in the NFL. Some of that worked, BUT, it seems there is a lack of tough love leadership on the team. Players are acting out, giving less effort, showing frustration, etc. This showed up at the end of last season too. There are no Brady’s, Faulk’s, White’s, Koppen’s, Lights, Wilforks, Brushi’s, Harrison’s, McGinest’s, Law’s, Johnson’s, Seymour’s, etc. Guys that would hand you your hat in practice if you were f-ing up. This group doesn’t want to offend each other. It’s a leadership and accountability vacuum. A lot has been changing over the last few years not just with players but with coaches (Brian Flores, Josh Boyer, Chad O’Shea, Jerry Schuplinski, Brett Bielema, Josh McDaniels, Jedd Fisch, Mick Lombardi, Carmen Bricillo, Cole Popovich (refused vax), Dante Scarnecchia, Ivan Fears) and management leaving (Dave Zieglar, Nick Casserio, various scouts), and I’m sure I left some out. Belichick appears to have circled the wagons with his trusted Deputy’s Matt Patricia and Joe Judge, along with Jerod Mayo and his son Steve B, but the massive change in players, coaches, and now trying to implement a new offense where they can make better use of the talent the colleges are making available, is perhaps a bit too much to swallow all at once. Maybe Belichick is trying to listen and give more input to assistant coaches, and try new things, but right now it’s not working that well. This was probably to be expected, but the plan does not indicate it was anticipated. There is still time and I won’t panic but that game last night was jarring. That was starters versus 2’s and 3’s the first third of the game. Jarret Stidham was out there running Mac Jones old offense at a high level, with Mac’s old coach. That may have been hard for Mac to watch, but to paraphrase Bill Parcells, Josh McDaniels isn’t walking through that locker room door any time soon. They need to suck it up and make it work. It’s going to take time, and they are going to have to try running parallel systems until they make the transition on offense that they set out to do, and that may require a couple of seasons in training and acquiring the right kind of blockers. They were already looking at a potential 0-4 start to the season. That looks a lot more probable today than it did a couple of days ago. However, with hard work, dedication, proper attitude, and persistence, they could turn a corner as the schedule lightens up, and begin polishing up what they can forge the first month of the season, and then perhaps steal a couple of games late in the season, and make the playoffs. I say that because of who they are, but there is no magic wand. When as a group they get sick and tired of being sick and tired, they will come together and force their way up and out of this mess by sheer willpower. Or they won’t, and it will be the worst season since 2000 when the pundits said BB should be fired after one season. More will be revealed. Lovem’ or hatem,’ they are and have been the most fascinating team to watch for the last 20+ years.

  17. “Really? You had to go back to a 2011 3rd round pick…” I’d be here all day long if you wanted me to list all of Belichick’s busts. I like how you skipped over N’Keal Harry. How about drafting Aaron Dobson, trading for Mohamed Sanu and picking Cyrus Jones? Not to mention, he let Amendola walk. Think about all the talent he passed on the last 10 years.

  19. Where is all the talent from that 230 mil he spent last year? A bunch of overrated, injury prone acquisitions. Next year’s coach gets zero to work with. Maybe he can go to work for his old buddy at Maro Lago.

    /again STUPID

How is Jones a “bust” he’s played one season and performed well.

It’s amazing how people overreact to pre season

The loins went 4-0 in the pre season and 0-16

Maybe we let him play a couple of seasons before we declare what he is or isn’t

  21. Pats will win the division with trouble from the Bills.

The Raiders will be lucky to finish in third place battling the Broncos whilst the Chiefs and Chargers being the clear front runners will both make the playoffs.

At least Devante Adams can bet some of that 20 million on Mac Jones’ post season in a Vegas sportsbook.

  22. Prior to Belichick, the Browns were a playoff contender every year, save 1. Those weren’t today’s Browns, they were the Ravens.

  23. On one hand, if preseason counts then all fear the Texans. But on the other hand, the oline in particular looked confused on run and pass plays both, and that was only the biggest of several issues I saw that if not fixed are going to be a mess in a real game. So just because preseason doesn’t count, that does not mean they don’t have gaps.

  24. Let’s hold off on the celebration/funeral for the demise of the Patriots. No dog in this, but I lived in the DC area when a certain coach had a mediocre (at best) QB and a team that went 0-4 in preseason the year after making the playoffs – and then went 14-2 and demolished all three opponents in the playoffs and Super Bowl. That would be Mark Rypien and Joe Gibbs. Not saying it will happen this way with NE, but let’s try to give a HOF (in waiting) coach the benefit of the doubt

  25. Bill’s not looking too great w/o Tom.

9 seasons without Brady (4 NE, 5 Cleveland, only one playoff appearance, 1 WC round win, 0 Divisional round wins.

  26. Unless you are Joe Gibbs, you have to have a HoF QB to win multiple Super Bowls. All the jabs at BB are pure jealousy.

    ***************************

Great post. I agree 100%. One of my earliest sports memories is the Patriots getting hammered vs the ’85 Bears, and the years after that could be described as “dysfunctional” at best (on all levels from ownership to coaching and roster). Suffering through those years made it all the more exciting when Parcells and Bledsoe arrived along with an unexpected trip to the SB (and another loss to the Packers). There’s an entire generation of Patriots fans who have no clue what it’s like to mediocre or even an underdog– let’s see if they jump ship?

As for this current Patriots team, I had high hopes during spring practices that they could at least beat out the Dolphins and Jets to finish second in the AFC East and maybe steal a win from Buffalo in the process. Last night was the first time their performance gave me concern. I think they’ll be okay in the long run, and while I expect them to improve as the season goes on (as the better Belichick teams have done), I’m thinking they may start out digging themselves a hole they can never really get themselves out of. Right now I’m feeling like the likelihood of looking more the Cam Newton “reset” year than the “rebuilding” season they had in 2021. We’ll see…

  28. Well they gotta play the regular season games to see how it all shakes out n a scenario out there for the next off season … wot if no one any good wants to come here aside from the slightly OK guys just looking to get paid ??? … should they finish around 500 or slightly better or slightly worse n think all real pats fans knew that post 12 the long rebuild will have moments of hell as we have to handle reality and letting other teams have their moments in the playoff sun n winning that last game glory while for the locals well we gotta deal with the present day gory. !!

  29. I do not really get the criticism of BB. I have been a lifelong Pats fan, just shy of 50 years old. I had season tickets for 12 years before moving cross country. They have always been my team and I have seen over 200 pats games in person.

If you watch the Pats year in and year out, they are ALWAYS one of the best coached teams in the league. They are generally tough, disciplined, and innovative. I think a reasonable case can be made that BB alone is worth 2-3 wins a year for this team.

I think they will end up 9-8 or 10-7 this year, but to hear the way people relish in crushing BB and his accomplishments is just insane. We have been privileged to watch one of the all time great, if not greatest coach, in the history of the sport. Love him or hate him, this should be the baseline for discussion.

Also, there have been any number of amazing QB that didnt win or won 1 super bowl. No one, in the free agent and cap era, has ever done what BB Pat’s have done. Please give him AND brady their full due because they pulled off something that will look as crazy as all the championships the Celts won back in the day.

  30. Growing pains with a new offense are to be expected. The offensive line is struggling right now. They will gel by November when the season officially starts for the Patriots.

  31. Never forget, gronk used the Lombardi trophy as a bat and dented it. This franchise is only beginning its cursed descent into irrelevance.

  32. The above was some great hyperbole but lets go with some facts.

    1. Belichick has taken the playoffs in 19 of 21 years and in one of the two he didn’t the team went 11-5 with Matt Cassel (who didn’t even start at USC).

    2. He took the team to the AFCG 12 times in those 21 years, winning 9 and 6 super bowls.

    3. His ability to assess NFL talent is unmatched as is his ability to effectively use talent that others failed to develop.

    4. Assessing college talent is not his strong suit but given he normally picks late in rounds, and had Goodell literally try to derail the team by taking draft choices, he’s done well. He’s been excellent with UDFA.

    5. He still has high quality individuals as team leaders: Slater, Folk, Bailey, Cardona, McCourty, Bentley, J Jones, Weis, Andrews, Harris M Jones and Meyers.

    6. The Patriots don’t approach the preseason like the Ravens so its hard to tell what to make of their OL and Offensive struggles. Let’s see how the season plays out.

  33. Hahahaha delusional clowns talking about playoffs? Just hope your garbage team doesn’t get swept by the Jets. Looking at an early draft pick, which they need since they have no QB and no talented players, just terrible belichick picks and signings.

    😂

  35. No one, in the free agent and cap era, has ever done what BB Pat’s have done.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++

Robert Kraft admitted Patriots used to laugh at teams that spent big in free agency.

Belichick’s free agency splurge in 2021 (the way he used to believe stupid) proved that the reason Belichick could build the team in a way that other coaches couldn’t was because he had Tom Brady. Without Tom Brady, he has to build the team just like how every other coach does. In other word, Belichick proved that the system that won Pats 6 SB was Brady’s system, not his.

The delusion of Belidick believers is unbelievable.

What??? Shula coached the Dolphins to their last SB appearance in 1984. He coached them in AFC Conference Championship games in 1985 and 1992. You know, the game where the winner goes to the SB. He coached in the playoffs 5 of his last 11 seasons.

In the 9 seasons as a HC, which includes the Browns and Pats) without a guy named Brady behind center, Bill has never taken a team to the AFC Conference Championship game.

  39. After looking at the Patriots schedule, I see them getting swept by the Bills and also losing to the Steelers, Ravens, Packers, Colts, Cardinals, Raiders and Bengals. Plus, Tua is like 3-0 against the Pats. So, they could lose at least one game against the Dolphins. That would put them at 10 losses for the season. At best, they could finish with 8 losses.

One of the worst takes. Pats are 3-7 in two seasons without Brady starting in December. This team falls apart the later the season gets

  41. Chis Allen, Bellichick went 3-1 during Brady’s 4 game suspension and 11-5 when Brady was out for a full season.

For the first half of Brady’s career the haters called him a “System QB”. Belichick didn’t.

He won the super bowl in year 2 of coaching the Patriots with a raw Brady.

Brady jumped ship after Belichick realized the cupboard was empty in a one and done playoff performance. As expected they struggled that year but he had them back in the playoffs a year later with a rookie QB.

He rebuilt the Browns into a playoff team before Art Modell shanked them. Ask Ozzie Newsome and Nick Saban what they think of the job Belichick did with the Browns. Ask the Giants super bowl teams under Tuna what they think of Belichick.

Envy will never bring peace of mind.

    Talk about being subjective!
If Jerry Jones is so great at finding talent then why hasn’t he won a SB in God knows how many years! And what’s so great about drafting receivers or any position with success if you don’t win SBs. What does Pittsburgh and Dallas have combined in the last 20 years, 1 SB Championship?

  45. He won the super bowl in year 2 of coaching the Patriots with a raw Brady.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

What did he coach then but can’t do it now?

  46. I know preseason means nothing, but the Raiders backups completely dominated New Englands starters.

  47. Belichick has 8 super bowl victories, Brady 7. Twelve teams (Bills, Vikings, Browns, Falcons, Cardinals, Lions, Chargers, Titans, Bengals, Jaguars, Texans, Panthers) have zero super bowl wins.

The attacks on Belichick’s performance are comical.

  48. More evidence of Belichick’s coaching ability:

During Belichick’s head coaching tenure with the Patriots the Dolphins have had 12 head coaches, the Bills 7 and the Jets 6. That’s 25 opposing head coaches in the AFC East.

  49. QBs that never won a super bowl:

    Marino
    Kelly
    Tarkenton
    Moon
    Fouts
    Rivers

    . . . the list goes on

Rogers, Wilson, Brees and Namath only won one.

And you guys are knocking Belichick because he won 8, and 6 with Brady.

  50. And you guys are knocking Belichick because he won 8, and 6 with Brady.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Read “Patriots QB coach on cam newton recent struggles” to see what made the offense system work. Tell me, do you still believe Belichick molded Brady? If you think he did, what did he do then but can’t do it now?

—- “There’s clearly some times that we haven’t *pulled the trigger fast enough* and therefore we’re hitching a couple extra times or *holding onto the ball a little bit longer than we would like to,* and that kind of can cause many things,” Fisch said. “It (holding onto the ball a little bit longer) can cause a negative play, a sack, an interception, an incompletion, a late throw.”

  51. Preseason doesn’t count for anything, but the Vegas backups gave the Patriot starters the business. Raiders looked well coached. Patriots looked like the Raiders usually look.

  52. Think about all the talent he passed on the last 10 years.

Wrong. He brought them to the playoffs one year. Then they crashed the following year. Again.

  55. No coach would have won with the Browns in 1995.

Once the move to Baltimore was announced, they lost 6 of the last 7 games. The only win being the final home game.

As tiger said, Ozzie Newsome credits Belichick for the foundation of the Ravens organization. Everything, from the ground up. They won 2 Super Bowls, and were a contender virtually all of Newsome’s 25-year career.
