One week from Week One, Cam Newton remains available

At a time when quarterback Tom Brady is playing as well as ever at age 45, a guy who entered the NFL more than a decade later remains available.

Cam Newton, the first pick in the 2011 draft and the 2015 NFL MVP, has gotten zero sniffs during training camp and the preseason.

It shouldn’t really surprise anyone. Although he thinks he’s good enough to start for one of the NFL’s 32 teams, none of the league’s franchises agree. The problem may be, quite simply, that he was sufficiently banged up during his first decade in the NFL to no longer attract the attention of any of the league’s teams.

Then there’s the fact that, yes, Newton as a huge personality. It would be difficult, and delicate, for Newton to be on a depth chart as anything but the starter. Plenty of guys now in the NFL grew up rooting for Newton. They’d want to play with him. Thus, he’d need to play for a team with an established starter.

That’s not what Newton wants to do. He wants to play. The teams know this. Which has made them less likely to consider making him the No. 2 quarterback.

There’s no reason to think he wants that. He wants to play. He wants to start. But that’s not happening.

Is he good enough to still play? The NFL’s 32 teams have rendered their verdict. Newton has done nothing to alienate any of the league’s teams. He simply has a persona that is too big to let him be a backup, if he’d even want that role. His belief that he’s good enough to start suggests that he doesn’t.

And so, by all appearances, that’s that for Newton. Unless Panthers starter Baker Mayfield gets injured and the powers-that-be decide to bring Newton back again to Charlotte, if not to win games but to sell tickets and generate excitement — as he did in 2021.

  1. Not sure anything is going to change regarding his ability. Not a Cam hater by any stretch but injuries have riddled him to the point I’m not sure what value he would offer any club over anyone else that’s available.

  2. Honestly, if he’d conside being the Dolphins short yardage RB they’d probably give him $2-3M to do it. He’d be good at it.

Miami has struggled with picking up 3rd and 1 and 4th and 1 for a few years now. He’d be of service.

But to play QB? No. He doesn’t possess good backup QB traits.

  3. The patriots need a QB and a high draft pick, they’ll be lucky not to get swept by the division with or without him.

  4. Jets and Seahawks could be options if their starters get hurt or fail. He needs receivers. He has not played with any recently.

  5. Not a Cam hater, but there’s a reason he’s not a roster. He’s looked Rough the past few years

  6. Cam is TOAST…. he isn’t even back up material….. apparently HE is the only one that’s yet to come to terms with it…..

  7. There are a few billion other men available for week 1 as well. I know Sandler is still a free agent, he has a great track record as a starter

  8. If he’s not getting calls from Cleveland or Detroit he’s done and the NFL is done with him.

  9. The fascination with Cam has always amazed me. Even in his prime he did not have NFL level accuracy. He was MVP because of his legs not his arm.

  10. Cam Newton literally had ONE good season. That 8 years ago. Injuries might be to blame but regardless there will be no more sniffing.

  11. I believe it’s fair to say that his on-field performance (12 TD, 15 INT, a 7-13 record) rather than his “huge personality” is the main reason teams haven’t pursued Newton. Cam was exciting as any player in his prime, but anyone who has watched his passes hit the ankles of his intended receivers over the past couple years knows that his playing days are likely over.

  12. The Denver Broncos stole Cam Newton’s soul in Super Bowl 50 and the opening game of the following season. He was never the same after that.

  13. He had his last chance in Carolina and blew it. Its over for the NFL, maybe one of these other leagues starting out.

  14. He’s available because he cares more about how he looks in post game press conference than on the field

  15. He can’t throw the ball anymore. The last two seasons are evidence of that. That’s kind of a problem for a QB. He’s still probably better than some backups around the league, but he’s not going to accept a backup role.

  16. He is cooked!! Hasn’t played well since the loss to Denver in the Super Bowl (which he showed no heart in). There are plenty of backup Qbs right now who are way better than him.

  17. Yes Cam has become more humble as he gets older but the fact remains his skills have diminished significantly. That ship has sailed. Maybe a rash of QB injuries will get him a chance but time for Cam fans to move on.

  18. When Cam didn’t dive for the ball in SB 50, that told me all I needed to know about his will to win.

  19. Cam is a “ME GUY”. It’s all about him. {See Owens and Moss}. If he was a great teammate (like Doug Flutie who was just LOVED by his teams) he could move around and still get signed. The reason nobody wants him is pretty much obvious. This is the NFL… not Auburn.

  20. Cam came into the league as a great athlete but couldn’t throw, never really could. This would be Cam’s 12th season, but he was “done” 3, maybe 4 seasons ago…so perhaps he was good for 8 seasons. This is EXHIBIT A why the Ravens, a very smart organization, will not be giving Lamar a deal that handicaps them for 5 more seasons, such as a “Watson” deal might. Maybe they’d do a deal with 3 yrs of serious money, but beyond that, Ravens will be saying bye-bye Lamar. There’s a reason running QBs don’t make it past 30 and pocket QBs last until 40.

  21. He’s a player that will ALWAYS leave his teammates hanging when he does something good or scores a TD. He will run past his teammates doing his superman bit screaming and staring at the crowd. A me 1st player then and one now.

  22. Newton is washed up. Newton never learned to play QB from the pocket. Once his physical ability diminished his career ended. (Warning to Baltimore, Arizona, Buffalo and other franchises with running QB’s) Enjoy the success while you can with your running QB’s. Once their legs are gone so is your QB.

  23. All this Cam negativity. Dude made it to a SB and balled out in his last playoff against the Saints. Sure, not a quality passer, but Ryan Fitzpatrick was a perennial bench player with 17 years and no playoffs. Yet, when he retired, they way you guys talked about him, I thought he was destined for the HOF.

How did Lamar end up in this? I tell ya, there is going a lot of crow-eating when Lamar gets through with you guys as if you already haven’t eaten enough.

  25. I think Cam still can be a garoppolo/wentz type of game manager with the right pieces around him (ie o line, running game couple good receivers). He just can’t carry a team anymore like he did from 2011-2018. People forget he lit it up in camp and preseason with the pats last yr he just got cut bc vaccine thing and the future of the franchise and 15th overall pick was waiting in the wings and showed he had the goods.

  26. People conveniently ignore that he had a turnstile o line in carolina last yr, cmc got hurt just after he signed,oc joe brady got fired a few weeks after he signed, no kicker against bills etc.

  27. Cam is better than some of the current NFL starters. But what NFL team wants to go from one bad QB to another bad QB.

  28. XFL or USFL should be all over him next Spring. If he’s willing to play for less it would be a good fit. Marquee name, but just doesn’t have “it” for the NFL anymore. Would instantly give the league an identifiable name to market around instead of a bunch players nobody has heard of.

  29. Cam can’t throw the football anymore. Just watch his Patriots tapes. The ball either went into the ground,or a mile over guys’ heads. It’s that simple…great runner, can’t throw. No team wants that.

  30. Gooddell and refs blatantly robbed him and panthers of a Superbowl. He was never the same after that.

  31. Cam should be a starter in this league. Cam could still challenge or beat out lower end qbs like mariota, geno smith, and brissett. His deep ball ain’t what it was but dude still throws with good velocity in the intermediate zones. He threw some strikes against the falcons and wft last year.
