Bill Belichick embraces the “$64,000 question” of opening day

We know that the Patriots will go to Miami five days before they face Dolphins. The Patriots won’t know what they’re getting from the Dolphins until the game starts.

That seems to be something New England coach Bill Belichick relishes.

“That’s the $64,000 question on everything,” Belichick told reporters on Sunday. “Opening day is opening day. Nobody is really showing much in preseason. The cards will be on the table on Sunday. Like every opening game, I’m sure we’ll have to make some adjustments. Once we see what they’re doing and vice versa. That’s always the way it is.

“So you have to leave room for a little bit of the unknown, things that they’ve been working on that they haven’t shown. Or things specifically game-planned for you that you’ve had trouble with at some point. They’ve had a lot of time to prepare for the game, several months, as have we. So there’s a big part of the unknown. I think all of that will clear up in the first two to three weeks of the season when teams settle into their style of play that they want to bank on. But right now that’s not necessarily known. Again, league-wide for playing time for a lot of the key players on every team is low, so it’s hard to tell how some of their players are going to be used but we know guys that they’re going to feature. We’ll have to see how it goes.”

Of course, the Dolphins will be dealing with the same challenge, as Belichick prepares to unleash whatever he’s got cooked up for Miami and the other teams on the schedule.

“I think there’s always an excitement for opening day and to get the season started,” Belichick said. “That brings a lot of different things into the conversation. It’s really just taking all the work that you’ve done in the offseason and training camp, as players, as a staff, everybody involved and now focusing on a single opponent, whatever that actually means. So you just direct it there and that rolls into a lot of different aspects, but it’s just to have a high performance on the one time a week we get an opportunity to compete and that’s what we’re all going to shoot to do. So I think we’re all ready for that opportunity and excited to have it be pretty close to being here. No different than any other year. There’s a training time period and then there’s a competition time period, and we’re heading into the competition time period. So it changes things a little bit in a good way.”

It changes things a lot in a great way for fans. Patriots at Dolphins is just one of nine games that will start next Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET, when football is back with an explosion of excitement and activity.

Then, three hours later, fans of nine of those teams will be thrilled — and fans of the other nine teams will be upset.

Best comment I’ve read in days hahaha!

  3. Here is the Dolphins game plan: have Tyreek Hill run past NE’s secondary and throw the ball long for home to get. Repeat

  4. The real 64,000 dollar question is what your whole entire career would have been like if you never had Tom Brady, Bill…? 🤔

BB drafted, developed and promoted the lowly 6th rd pick.

Shula won nothing with Dan Marino in the easy pre cap era.

What would Walsh be without Montana? Noll without Bradshaw, Lombardi without Starr, Landry without Staubach?

Please get to college. Any college.

Sure! And what would Bill Walsh’s career have been like without Montana? Or Jimmy Johnson’s without Aikman? Or Sean Payton’s without Drew Brees? Every coach needs players to execute, and only the greatest players and coaches combined make dynasties.

Think Brady even makes the playoffs if he went from the Pats to the Bears, or Jaguars? He got to pick the most win-ready team in the league, while Belichick had to work with Cam Newton and a rookie. Apples to apples would have been Belichick getting Aaron Rodgers when Brady went to the Pats.

  7. Ahhh, the dolphins. Proclaimed by their fans as awesome every off season and then they never make the playoffs.

Maybe this year is different, but probably not

  8. When you look at Bill’s record against the Dolphins post Brady, especially on the road the question is pretty simple to answer.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The 2001 Pats were predicted to be a basemen dweller before Brady took over.

  10. Ol’ BB was a regular Chatty Cathy today. Good thing he go it out of his system early. After the fins crush them, his postgame comment will simply be “we’re on to Pittsburgh.”

  11. Mac Jones has a ceiling – but Bill Belichick has a floor. And it’s higher than everyone’s.

I will NEVER count the Pats out while he’s on the sideline. There are few people in sports that I would say “scare” me anymore – but he’s one of ’em. Head & shoulders above the rest, and yes, he IS playing chess.

He could win with any roster in the league.

Who gave Bill the Happy pills? That’s positively garrulous by his standards.

  13. He absolutely loves it and thrives on it. Other coaches, even highly successful ones are consumed by pressure over time. Belichick eats and breathes football all day, then sleeps without a care in the world.

    LOL.

SI : When No One Believed in the Belichick Way (2018/1/31)

“His belief was steadfast, and that meant leading his coaching staff through a daily steeplechase of rigorous scouting, preparation and planning WHILE THEY THEMSELVES WERE NOT SURE IF THEY SHOULD PUT THEIR HOMES ON THE MARKET ”

BTW, watch the whole game between Colts and Pats in 2001 when Pats were 0-2. In the middle of it popped up a list of top 5 0-2 team, and Pats were not one of them.

    Get a clue, Belichick believers.

Yah bc no one believed Brady was going to be any good as a starter except, wait for it, Belichick. They had just lost their starter Bledsoe

If not given a chance by BB , Brady would have been out of the league

    Clueless, just completely clueless

He did a great job against the Bills in the playoffs with his chess skills. BB in his 8 total seasons as a HC without a guy named Brady behind center has never sniffed the SB. Yup, all that chess.

  17. These Patriots and BB haters/gloaters don’t even wait for the season to start. Bill Belichick is still the best head coach in the NFL-he has won more Super Bowls than ALL THE OTHER ACTIVE HEAD COACHES COMBINED!! AND Brady was a learning youngster for the first 3 of BBs 6 Super Bowl championships. No one talks about the big brain in Buffalo that can’t even protect a lead with 13 seconds left in the playoffs while doing a kickoff!!

LOL, in what way does it make you believe that he made Brady?

Oh, because Brady was a 6th round, therefore a coach of DEFENSIVE mind, who was almost fired, suddenly invented an OFFENSIVE system that no other coaches or QB were able to command, even after 20 years. That makes sense to you, right?

  19. He did a great job against the Bills in the playoffs with his chess skills. BB in his 8 total seasons as a HC without a guy named Brady behind center has never sniffed the SB. Yup, all that chess.

    This is a stupid comment
Bill Walsh was had a losing record without Montana and never “sniffed” the playoffs

Point is you can take whoever you think is the best coach in the league right now and he’s not as good as his players

If BB was the the head coach of the Dolphins last season they do t lose 7 straight games and are probably playoff team.

  20. Nobody knows what Miami is going to look like. Given the new coach, the offense should look a lot like the Niners…heavy on runs and misdirection

  21. Taping signals jokes 15 years after they were fresh…. you get a 1/10. Only people less impressive than that joke-teller are the ones who laugh.

  23. $64,000 Question? Only a dinosaur like Belichick and me would use that metaphor. The TV game show of that name went off the air back in the early 60’s.

BB acting like he doesn’t have tapes of the Dolphins camp

    ******************************************************************

You do realize it was Miami, not New England, that purchased tapes of the audible calls New England was using, resulting in a 21-0 victory over a superior New England team that was left scratching their collective heads over how the Dolphins seemed to know every play New England was running or audibling into. The league handled this tape issue in 2006 a lot different than what they did to New England, because the Dolphins were not running roughshod over the league’s “Precious Parity.” New England was, and they wanted that stopped. The Dolphins escaped punishment solely because the league did not know how to handle “purchasing tapes” vs “making tapes.” So intentionally throwing games is just th emost recent example of cheating in Miami, which goes all the way back to Dirty Don Shula, the Hungarian Hypocrite, in 1970.

You’ve spent a lifetime waiting for a moment when maybe BB and NE were down….really down….like 9-8 or 10-7, and lob bombs of bitterness from deep within your hollow soul. Only one team wins the SB and it’s a tall order for every team. Not winning it isn’t an indictment….unless you are NE and BB and have made winning it somewhat routine. The odds favor you being right, and NE not winning a SB for a while. You personally, can only be wrong once taking this position…..they have to make and win the SB for you to be wrong. Nice way to set yourself up. Hopefully they have a successful season in the end, and bring you more salty tears of bitterness that you can drink as King of The Mountain of Hate. One of the great things about following the Patriots has been watching people like yourself get all twisted up like a pretzel when you realize yet again that you hate in vain. Bitter, hateful, and lacking in appreciation is no way to go through life.

  26. Not winning it isn’t an indictment….unless you are NE and BB and have made winning it somewhat routine.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

He never won a division without Brady. Without Brady, his team won 10 games only when with easy schedule, and won 11 because of Moss.

  27. Man these pats fans are so delusional. Every other team cheats but theirs. They’re the only honest team in the league. I do t care who cheats or not, but don’t make it sound like your team is holier than thou. I bet you all think Aaron Hernandez didn’t do anything either right.

  28. Mac Jones is in a free fall, this game is going to be fun! I don’t even think the traditional Patriots cheating antics could help this team. TB12 was the franchise and now there’s nothing left except for an antiquated coach/GM. If you want to know how he’s going to do, just check his record when he coached the Browns

  29. The “$64,000 Question” was a 1950’s TV game show that probably very few people who post here have any knowledge of.
Considering inflation, it should probably be called the $800,000 question today.

  30. Brady lost 12 times against the Dolphins as a startingPatriots QB, almost all in Miami. So much for the haters talking about Belichick’s losses in Miami the last two years and claiming it wouldn’t have happened with Brady.

Cultists never let facts get in the way of their agenda. The rest of us live in a fact based world.

We witnessed it the last two seasons…..and Bob Kraft has some serious regrets

  32. Most NFL coaches are expected to win at least 1 game for every million dollars they make in salary. The avg NFL coach now makes in the 5-8 million a year range. Of course its a secret, but BB is rumored to be in the 15 mil range. You see the problem here…

Maybe this year is different, but probably not

    Xxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxx Xxxxxxxxxxx

Since Tannehill last year in Miami, this isbthe 1st real year we are expecting playoffs. Even last year we seen the offensive line play in PS and the whole 3 OCs mess.

But even in last years mess, Miami did squeeze out 2 wins from the Pats. Now only if Flores and Jacoby could have squeezed one more win out while Tua was hurt, then the playoffs were doable.

1 game separated the Pats from the Dolphins last year. 1 game. We did enjoy that sweep on Mac though.

  34. First year HC vs the GOAT HC? Easy win for the Patriots. The division runs through Foxborough this year.

  35. Hahahaha poor patriots fans crying rivers, why are you so invested? You realize you’re not on the team, right? You had nothing to do with the games Brady won that the cheater wants to take credit for.

All that winning left with Brady. This teams Super Bowl is beating the Jets once this year, amid all the humiliating blowout losses.

He’d still be a two time champion as the architect of those Giants Super Bowl defenses in ’86 and ’90, at minimum.

However, my Rhodes Scholar, you forgot one slight change this year. When Brady went to Tampa, Brian Flores went to Miami as HC. Without Flores knowing the Pats and Belichick well and how to defend against them, perhaps you don’t win at least two of those games. However sadly for you one of the evil overlords, Stephen of Ross banished Flores. So good luck with the Rookie HC.

And before you laugh and trash talk what I just said, make a note of it. We will review it when the school ye_, ummm, season is over.

  38. Wow the Pats are a disaster. Really sad to see them crumble now that Brady abandoned them.

  39. “What would Walsh be without Montana? Noll without Bradshaw, Lombardi without Starr, Landry without Staubach?”

Very true. Almost all head coaches with multiple championships had a star QB. The exception was Joe Gibbs, who won 3 SuperBowls with 3 different QBs, none of which were truly a star.

    HTTR!

  40. Well, I see the insane clown posse is out in full force. The Patriots from 2001 to 2004 were a defensive team where Brady did enough to get things going. It was later that he was the force behind the team, and they lost a lot when that happened. By the time they won the SB again it was 2014, and a defensive play got the job done. It’s always been complementary football from all 3 phases. Mac Jones is also way better than you fine gentlemen imagine, with your imaginary ceiling talk. He had a better rookie season that ANY QB currently playing. If that doesn’t scare you, you are delusional. Be we will see. We could lose to Miami, fine. We usually don’t win if the first game is down there anyway. It won’t even phase me if we do. But we will be in the thick of it come playoff time.

  41. the dolphins talking like their not tampering with players and trying to lose games for better draft position. talk about low…nothing worse than cheating and trying to lose.
