Lamar Jackson: We’re still talking contract, but talks will probably cut off after this week

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson says he and the team still have time to work out a long-term contract extension. But not a lot of time.

Jackson said today that the sides are still talking about a new contract, but by the end of the week his focus will be on Sunday’s game against the Jets, and beyond that he plans to focus solely on football and not talk contract during the season.

“We’re still talking. The week’s not over yet, but soon. Soon will probably be the deadline. Probably be cut off after this week,” Jackson said.

Jackson added that he doesn’t know how close the sides are to a deal. It’s tough to know where things stand with Jackson and the Ravens in part because Jackson is taking the highly unusual step of negotiating his contract without the help of an agent. An experienced agent who had negotiated other big contracts would probably have a fairly good idea of whether the two sides are close enough to get a deal done before the season, but Jackson has never done this before.

If a deal doesn’t get done by the end of this week, that likely means the sides will stop talking, and Jackson will play out the fifth and final year of his rookie contract before resuming talks with the Ravens after the season — or beginning talks with other teams after hitting free agency in March.

  1. What on earth does Lamar Jackson want that isn’t being offered? He would be so much better off with professional representation.

  2. Assuming he plays well he will be tagged and won’t be talking to anyone but the Ravens in March.

  3. The best thing that can happen for the Ravens is to prolong it another year with hope they come to their senses. The tag price, and 2 year tag, is cheaper to what he expects to be paid. If he shows he can actually win playoff games, that is games, then pay him, but so far that hasn’t happened.

  4. He is delusional if he thinks he has the upper hand. If he gets badly injured this year, he will miss out on guaranteed $100-$150 million that he could have signed for this offseason.

  5. He doesn’t know how close they are? He should know exactly where the Ravens stand with their offer in relationship to what he wants. There’s no middleman after all. How dim is he?

  6. He’s hoping Tua fails or Brady retires. Definitely wants to be back in Florida. Less taxes on that big contract as well!

  7. They should extend Huntley instead and trade Lamar for a haul of picks or a WR1 after the season.

  8. Jackson added that he doesn’t know how close the sides are to a deal.

I’m gonna go ahead and call that a bad sign.

  9. I hope he doesn’t hold out or get injured. I took him as RB# 1 since my FFL lists him as a RB.

  10. Still find it funny from that years draft people saying after year one he was the best qb taken. Then josh Allan because… JOSH ALLAN!!!!!

  11. Reading the actual article where all this is sourced from it sounds like to me they are still pretty far apart. From his comments it reads like LJ is betting on himself to have a big year. This is the NFL version of the game of chicken.

  12. It’s obvious the hang ups are centered around incentive numbers for completed forward passes.

You mean the same Huntley that went 2-5 last season and played the Ravens right OUT of the playoffs? That’s 2-5 with teams NOT having the advantage of having any real game tape to study like they will moving forward……

You actually made Lamar’s Value/Asking price Go Waaaay up!!if your idea of a Saavy move is to get rid of your R.O.Y. Youngest MVP QB in NFL history 37-12 in the prime of his life 25 Year Old QB for Huntley and a bunch of Question marks AKA Draft picks is ABSURD!! If you’re opinion is a fair representation of the Ravens fanbase I hope you get what you’re looking for!!! As a Giants fan we’d GLADLY give Daniel Jones amd 3 1sts for LJ8! Sheesh the 9ers gave up more than that for Trey Lance!! Lol

  14. I’d sign a deal now – the longer this season goes on, the less valuable you will be. Your replacement is already on the team.
